- At the India Today Mumbai Conclave, BJP's Sushil Kumar Modi asked AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi why he was opposing banning polygamy. Owaisi answered saying that there was no difference between the number of Muslim men having a second wife or Hindus having a second wife, according to a government survey.
Women's rights activist Flavia Agnes spoke about Hindu men having second wives and how they don't get maintenance in the event of a divorce. In addition to this, the second wife's children are termed as "illegitimate".

One nation one law. Why each having law to suite their needs?
Okay - great. While, I do not specifically agree with you - but let us go with your argument and have one law for one nation. Let's begin with abrogating hindu personal laws like Hindu marriage act and hindu succession act first. There is special marriage act in practice, let's start regulating marriages only under special marriage act. There is Indian succession act in practice. Let the first step of the govt. be the abrogation of Hindu marriage act and hindu succession act and enforcement of special marriage act and Indian succession act regardless of religion (hindu, christians, muslims, Sikhs - all to follow the same laws) - then we can start to have the conversations of UCC. The first step has to be abrogating Hindu marriage act and hindu succession act. Ask the govt. if they are ready to abrogate Hindu marriage act and hindu succession act first.
The politicians are just playing with us Mr. Yadav. This is just vote bank politics that they did around Babri masjid for the past 30+ years. UCC will have the same affect for the next 30 years.

@@mohdshafiq6112 By your logic, Hindus should have opposed Hindu Code Bill 1955 which prohibits polygamy. But they did not because reform is a dynamic process. And the bill did not stop anyone from practicing religion. It was just a social reform. Similarly, UCC will not stop any muslim from going to mosque or celebrating Eid or practicing Islam or any religion for that matter. But with time, certain social reforms are necessary and no Muslim should have a problem with that
@@anirudhmasurkar3537 If the UCC is truly secular - there is an extremely large majority of muslims that would not have a problem. Age of consent, polygamy, succession, etc. are things that may be regulated as per the law of the land since many muslims are living in secular countries and are adhering to the law of the land with regards to these matters. Adhering to UCC would not be a problem to most muslims. The problem is that the current govt. should ensure that the UCC is not just the rephrasing of Hindu personal laws being applied to the entirety of the nation under the guise of UCC - to every Dalit, every tribal, every Sikh, every jew, every Parsi, every christian, and lastly, to every muslim.
For example, sapinda regulations should not apply to those who do not ascribe to the hindu religion. Now, will the UCC abrogate sapinda regulations of the Hindu marriage act? Or will it be that even jews, Sikhs, christians, muslims, and others will have to abide by the sapinda regulations under the UCC??
Polygamy is big in tribals - will the UCC accommodate the tribals or will it not?
Beef consumption is allowed in Goa & north-eastern states - under UCC, will the govt. allow consumption of beef in the entire nation or will it prohibit the consumption of beef in the entire nation? I will do what my govt. tells me. But what the govt. tells me to do should not be unfair. It cannot be that there are certain rules of Maharashtra, certain for Goa, and certain for the north-eastern states.
These are the real issues that the govt. should tackle in the UCC. It cannot be like demonetisation or implementation of GST - it cannot be haphazard. This has to do with the fabric of our beautiful nation. And if it is done correctly, honestly, with good intentions, with only the spirit of social reform, you will see that very few muslims will have a problem with UCC. The current regime will have exhibit their good intentions first - then we can have a conversation about UCC.

Which means they don't have any problem. Govt never said UCC means anti islamic laws. Govt. just said UCC. No Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Christian, Buddhist, Paris, Jew has problem. Why only Musims have problem. As if UCC will kill all Muslims. As if people of other religions are illiterate and they dont know the law will affect them. @@anirudhmasurkar3537 I do not doubt for one second that we have intelligent folks from all religions. But they did not say anything because they are never threatened by the far right. Hate speeches are constantly being spewed by the far right against muslims. They are organising mahasabhas where they openly speak about massacring muslims, and they make such videos viral. This is being done to provoke muslims. And no action is taken against them.
The introduction of UCC is being proposed by the same right wing who allow hate speech against muslims to be delivered without any consequences; who allow speeches on Hindu rashtra to be delivered without the application of relevant laws, which are used rampantly against the minority. Forgive us for having our reservations against UCC. This govt. has to do a lot more than lip service to convince the already afraid muslims that UCC is not an anti-muslim bill. They have to first introduce the bill in the parliament. Until then - this issue will be used for vote bank politics just like Babri masjid-ram mandir case.
Furthermore, I do know from the conduct of this govt. that this govt. does not have it in them to frame sensible laws. Demonetisation was executed for the purpose of bringing back black money but then they go ahead & introduce 2000 rupee bills which makes it easier to save black money.
They wanted to end triple talk, which is a noble thing to do but then they pass the bill where the man is imprisoned yet has to provide maintenance to the wife. How does he earn money to provide maintenance when he is imprisoned? After coming out of prison, do you think that that man will be providing the basic necessities to the wife because of whom he was imprisoned?
And forget what has happened in the past - how does the govt. intend to regulate polygamy among tribals, beef consumption in Goa and north east, & sapinda regulations? These are just a few thorny issues that I can think of just by being a student of law. Imagine the actual real issues that will come up when the bills are actually taken up for drafting. Framing of UCC is going to be a humongous task and the govt. will have to be ready for suffering the backlash of the majority if they are actually going to make secular UCC that does not discriminate on the basis of religion. And so far, we know that this party does not like to loose elections. They won't risk the backlash. The bill will be biased towards Hindu laws citing that this is the culture of India, and if you have a problem with this culture, you can leave the country. Why should I leave this beautiful country? My forefathers died for me to have a good life in Bharat, Hindustan, & India - why should I leave? Why was leaving the country not used against the muslims before 2014?
There is only so much that can be said in comments. I, as a progressive educated Indian muslim, have an open mind with regards to the UCC. I really do - if it really does not discriminate on the basis of religion, I will readily accept it as the law of the land. There are countless others like me. The problem is that it is the ruling party we don't trust. And these are differences that cannot be solved in TH-cam comments. So, this will be my last comment. I wish you well my brother.

The thing is one should stop considering their religion above their nation. This is found in only 1 case specifically. I respect my friends from that religion and they also have a lot of love for me but i have noticed that they always play victim cards. And as for Sharia.. Well see the thing is its not about sharia being good or bad.. First of all no nation should be based on any religious laws especially 1 in particular. Secondly all those nations who follow it strictly are doomed(like pak) and who don't are prospering. Saudi for ex is allowing construction of temples, allowing yoga and women are very free (yk what i mean). Afghanistan- well women's education is stopped. Purdah is compulsory though its not compulsiony in Quran. Its a sign of decency but not a compulsion. Even in Bible its said that women should wear head scarf while worshipping and should be calm, composed etc. But do they follow it. Definitely not cause its not a compulsion.

Mr Owaisi is equating crimes committed in manipur to the laws of our constitution. Those people have committed crimes against the law that doesn't mean we have laws to commit crimes. Indian constitution has no legality for polygamy in hindus, if a person goes against it and marries multiple wives it only means he is going against the law and it sure doesn't mean that it is legal. I think that journalist is acting dumb. According to hindu succession act, every sibling has equal rights on the property of their parents irrespective of gender but it was never hindu because hindus had always had the practice of passing property to only male siblings. The same thing goes for other acts, they are reformed acts only with a Hindu name. India today has knowingly kept Sai Deepak out of this debate, he would have wiped the floor with him for this foolish argument.

No muslim wants the enforcement of shariah law in the country - but equally - no muslim also wants the enforcement of hindu personal laws in the country. If the UCC is upholding the secular fabric of the nation as is envisaged in the constitution - very few muslims will have a problem with the UCC.
