Had to watch this video twice, as the first time my daughter decided to get out our circuit and was banging some drums from about 9 minutes in then I laughed as it took you until 16 minutes to get your drums. Top video as always.
I love this video! I always wanted to experiment with 303's but hated the sequencer and workflow. I briefly used a TB-03 at one point and lost interest. Then I saw this video... and completely went down a rabbit hole learning about the Avalon. For the record, you absolutely have the best video and overview on it -- no question! I totally slept on this machine when it came out, but after seeing this video last year I knew I had to have one. I recently (finally) got a hold of one. Totally blown away by it! Just so much fun to play with and use. The features are amazing. It's a real shame they're so hard to come by now, especially the accessories like the filter cartridges. I really hope they continue to be produced. More people need to enjoy them.
The avalon i think eventually will be more rare than the 303 haha. If you need to get filters get the SEM, it's hands down the best one. I don't think the Ladder filter was made for acid.
I really like the Roland TB-03. I can't write basslines even if my life depended on it with plug-ins, but with the Roland they just come out. It sounds so good with cut-off really low and tiny amounts of resonance.
@@RickyTinez really appreciate your Avalon bassline videos. I literally bought one from just the 2 main videos you have made. Would love to hear another if you get time. I was going to sell my boutique tb03 after getting the Avalon but after playing them together, I really like the bark the tb03 can get. It's a bit surprising and perhaps it is because it's acb instead of analog. Once again I love the Avalon and it my favorite synth but I was wondering what you thought of the tb03. I'm going to keep mine now. Nothing wrong with 2 hits of acid you know?
Brilliant. Highly informative video about a synth I just bought a few months ago. Since then I've played around with it but haven't had the time to sit down and really get to know the sequencing which I knew was pretty powerful. This video has saved me hours of pressing the wrong button and flipping through the manual. Really appreciated.
I love mine!! Jam with it and the digitakt too. I like to run mine through analog heat distort it and play the filters off each other, creates some beautiful harmonics and tones. Nice review too, learned a couple things.
Got my Avalon a few years ago, new from Perfect Circuit. Very deep. Built like a tank, unlike the Roland Transistor Bass 303. Avalon is exact replica of 303 components and circuits, with added optional features.
Very nice! The envelope and tracking features are reminiscent of the Devilfish 303 mod which is great for creating patterns within patterns. That rotate start point function is well handy too.
I’ve just sold mine , but it’s very solid and sounded great . Can get some crazy harmonics from sem filter . Built like a nord synth.sub plus sem filter is very nice. Good tutorial too , filter offset , arp and slide times are handy
Hey man we talked briefly at the Novation NAMM booth in January. I asked you about changing scale layout on the Circuit like you can on the Launchpad. What's up! Anyways, I'm wondering if you have a useful contact person at Abstrakt. Their website has no working contact section and the Cali phone number they have listed doesn't work. I want to encourage my purchasing guy to get their stuff into our stores. I don't think we have any distribution for them in Canada yet.
hey Enrique, you ever sequence the Avalon with elektron A4? I got the avalon to respond to CV/gate messages, but I can't get the filter to respond to linear values, any idea whassup with that?
I've actually never tried that combo out. THE avalon has a couple issues with it when it comes to receiving external data. I've had bugs with midi. But never tried this CV.
excellent!! 18:37....S Express sounds like! Very usefull and almost unique tuto except those done by Bryan himself! Not sure but I think you can also modulate just one step with those filters /VCA modulations such as the Elektron MD...it gives more potentiel to creativity too! And of course, don't forget the Arpegio....fasten your seatbelt when doing it!!!hahaha Really nice to see demos of that beast...thanks
Avalon is an exact clone of the main board with added features. I think the RE-303 is probably the only other one but it does not have added features. All the others are not even close such as the Cyclone Analogic but hipsters will like it because is is the same size and graphics.
I used to have the real thing many years ago. Now I’ve got a Cyclone (the new look one) and an MB33 which gets its patterns from the Cyclone. The Avalon is a beast but quite a lot more money. I’m 95% there with the machines I have which is more than fine for me. For folks comparing instruments at component level that’s fine if you’re an engineer. Get a real 303 if you’re a collector (as I was to be fair, had to have the full set!). For musicians there are plenty of options.
Thanks for the recommendation Enrique! Amazing educational video as usual. I’m loving my Avalon. I’ve spent most of my time with it jamming and recording parts. Question re the patterns: Once you create a pattern and dial it in the way you like it AND save it, when you recall it will it recall the parameters you dialed in when you created it? I hope that question make sense! Thanks!😎🎛
Trovarsi Awesome! I can’t wait to hear what you do with it. No the knobs will not recall what parameters you had then set to, only the pattern settings.
@@RickyTinez Hey Ricky I just wanted to update you that I finally came to my senses a year later to pick up an Avalon. Super excited for it to come in!
You gotta be a serious acid head to pay almost $1000 for a 303 clone. The only thing I really want from this unit is the MIDI control capabilities. How long is the VCA Decay? I guess you still have to turn down the tempo if you want to play long notes.
A THOUZEND DUX for this !!? Yes it's a really good unit but there are so many 303 clone that are Way cheaper . Not sure I could justify spending that much on a 303 clone I don't care how much better the Sequencer is . It's not like Acid is back in ... thanx for the review tho . this thing looks supper cool . Wish I could get one ; but at that price you could pretty much get TR-03 +TR-08 +TR09 ; all the volca range or even an OP1 or An MPC Live. I got so exited when i saw this video but the price just Bummed me out.... HARD!!! .
Yes, the Avalon is not cheap, but the build quality is among the best I've seen I'm synthesizers, I've had my hands on. It's built like a tank with high class components. It's a small company, serving a small target group. It's a boutique synth made to last and still way cheaper than an used original TB-303, which does not come close in built quality. Luckily, there are different options to get legit acid sound, depending on taste and budget, these days. For me (who plays full acid live gigs), the Avalon is worth every penny. Others may see other alternatives suit their needs. For instance, the TB-3 is a great solution to get legit acid sound in hardware, when on a budget. Trade-off are built quality and looks. I am happy, that there is affordable specialized hard (TB-3, TB-03, TT-303 and X0xb0x) and software (ABL3, Phoscyon and VB-303), which allows pretty much everybody to make legit acid, these days.
no the RE-303, when done properly, sounds better than a 30years old 303 or the Avalon, trust me their is a enginering level that is as high as you can go, just read the forum you will see how far thos people went it's insane ; what they did is so precise you couldn't do it with industrial production (they measure every components one by one, just as Roland in the 80's, because their is differences between the same component) I use a X0Xb0X personnaly because I don't have those kind of money XD cheers
I did not follow the RE-303 forums, but I believe you, that the RE-303 community is top notch in what they are doing, however. I also know, that Brian of Abstrakt Instruments is a really smart cookie and he's putting a lot of effort in building the best quality synth he can possibly make. He may not write about every little step in forums, though. Last thing he would do is to cheap out on components, as you can tell by watching his videos. We're here on a level, where it's generally hard to tell, what sounds better and what's closer to the TB-303, as there are differences between the individual TB-303s, also. It may even come down to a matter of taste. Some people may prefer the sound of a 30 year old TB-303 over a new one, like people prefer a well aged wine or steak. Some may not like a too perfect 303. I wouldn't claim that one machine sounds better than the other, just by the information in the forums, either. To form a rock solid opinion on this, I would need to work hand on with at least two of each machines over a longer period of time. Listening to sound examples online, would not cut it, as we're talking about very minute differences. - And even then, it's just my taste. Right now I use the Avalon, and it seems to me that it's on the highest level of TB-303 replication. I have a friend, who owns a TB-303 as well as the Avalon and he told me once: "Why do you want to save up for the original TB-303? The Avalon is a TB-303!". I have a modded X0xb0x and two TB-3s, also. I think that the Avalon sounds better than these two. But I also can tell you, that only very few people can tell, if I use the ABL3 VST in my productions, instead. - And by the way, I also think that the TB-3 sounds way better, than many analog purists would ever admit. Unfortunately, Roland failed in the "presentation of the dish", as skeuomorphism is the game of the trade.
@ engineer yeah I totally agree ! I have no issue with people using ABL or a better VST (don't remember the name) in fact, as they do good music with it it's the only thing that matter (like Shinra, who use only plug in..just a few people could tell he don't use real gear, and only after hours and hours of listening carefully; but that's cool because what he does is awesome
Hi Enrique, Not going to argue the Avalon is a fine synth, but have you tried the Korg Arp Odyssey for the same purpose? Imho with rev2 & 3 filters it is as bleepy as a 303 if not more.
Not tried it yet. But the Avalon is meant to replicate the TB-303 sound very accurately, plus more. There are many acidic synths out there, but in order to satisfy the true acid heads, it's almost impossible to use other synths than those, which are made to replicate the TB-303. Let me say this: 9 out of 10 acid basslines made with other synths than TB-303 or TB-303 clones wouldn't fly with them.
I am so unhappy that there is seemingly no such thing as this on the market anymore (is there?), because the additional rhytmical functionality is just extreme. Its Aphex Twin in a box.
to me the only downside of this vidéo is that you didn't use SLIDES or slides over accent, or rest with slides or rest with accent ; otherwise it was really nice :) cheers from france :)
eeee, fucking XACTLY!!!!!!!!!!! I mean, where's the signature wagh-waugh of the 303 accent slide with some env? Most people judge the quality of the clone based only on the envelope accent behaviour.
The Avalon seems way better though. But at 150 Euro Behringer has the upper hand. I would prefer the modded Xoxbox over the Behringer but that is also more expensive.

It's nowhere near the best clone you can buy, plus it's not exactly even a proper clone it's more like a monosynth that does acid basslines
Had to watch this video twice, as the first time my daughter decided to get out our circuit and was banging some drums from about 9 minutes in then I laughed as it took you until 16 minutes to get your drums. Top video as always.
Hahahah! I almost use drums from the start but I knew that would be a bad idea because I wouldn’t talk about anything
It’s easily my favorite synth in my collection
Excellent demo Ricky I enjoy your videos 😁

Hey Beringer, make one of these.
That jam at the end is heavy

Same!
Best synth I own as well. This thing sounds alive. I kind of get the chills just looking at it when i walk into my studio.
Something to think about for later these instruments are starting around $1,000.00 plus filters but this is a beast

I love my Avalon! ❤️ Great video!
Hey Chief - I requested this one a little while back - most appreciate you showing it off!! Have one on backorder :))
lol your comment "This is awesome!" after that tasty jam @ 18:48 sold me! so sick cant wait for mine to arrive so i can get aciiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiid!
Very nice! The envelope and tracking features are reminiscent of the Devilfish 303 mod which is great for creating patterns within patterns. That rotate start point function is well handy too.
Somewhat reminiscent, but this one is lacking the FM stuff which made the DF stand out. I miss my DF sometimes...
@20:19 - "What is going on...?" Haha, love that feeling!
This my default state with most of my gear. Only not in a good way
great video, learned a bunch of stuff, loved the seq at the end
Thanks for explaining so well this massive synth which is a bit hermetic at first. Now I can see clearly !
very nice demo, thanks!
My favourite synth :) always comes up with the goods.
you said it.. no matter which way you turn the knobs its always in the sweet spot.
Thanxk for the demo!
I wonder.....if the light buttons / push buttons of the sequencer are susceptible to defects due to a lot of use ??
Just change the buttons. They are what, 3 cents a piece?
Why did they discontinue this synthesiser?
oh MAN you make some groovy lines with that
I’ve just sold mine , but it’s very solid and sounded great . Can get some crazy harmonics from sem filter . Built like a nord synth.sub plus sem filter is very nice. Good tutorial too , filter offset , arp and slide times are handy
Managed to snag an order in the other day. Can’t come soon enough
sadly it might be awhile.. i think i ordered a backup one almost 2 years ago and it's been crickets haha
Oh I know. But at least I have peace of mind that when (if) it comes, I’ll have one

@07:00 Really feels like 2Unlimited's No limit is getting a remix... We need a deep house remix of it!
Great , but where to find it ? Not easy.
I love the 303 but the Avalon goes beyond
Damn straight
Nice demo. Thanks!

I figured it out. RTFM. Avalon filter needs v/octave, not linear. It works pretty good controlled by cv/gate, tried midi, also had issues...
Now this is how you make a 303 clone. This thing sounds awesome and tons of depth. Only problem is 950 dollar price tag. Yikes!
Love the Avalon. But I have to memorize all the tricks you shows in the video. :) - You have it down, man!
