Had a '68 Tempest with one of these in it. 1 barrel carb, 2 speed transmission, and I still got more speeding tickets in that car then all of my other cars combined. lol Loved that engine/trans combination!!
I love me an inline six. Badass. The perfect motor, an inline six; inherently balanced, not to big, not too little, sounds great. A love a V8 too, but the six is my favorite.
Sounds awesome! I'd love to drive one of these. One of my neighbors had a '66 Tempest Sprint parked in the driveway for years and years... always thought about knocking on the door and asking "how much to make it disappear?" Then out of nowhere one day, they got it running, cleaned it up, drove it around for a few months and sold it - probably for quite a profit! I gotta LOL @ some of these clueless comments. The 4bbl 230 OHC engine - stock - was rated 215HP gross. That's at the flywheel in a climate controlled environment with no alternator, power steering pump, A/C compressor, straight exhaust, etc. 199HP at the wheels is the net rating minus mechanical losses and atmospheric factors. There's no reliable conversion between gross vs. net or crank vs. drive wheels, but it's safe to say that this Firebird is making a shit load more power than it left the factory with.
Dude, it's stroked out to V8 specs. Not sure what they're trying to prove. drop a small block chevy crate motor in there for half the price and be done.
I went through the trouble of rebuilding my IH 392 for my numbers matching Travelall. Will probably make 275hp. Yeah a small block is cheaper but that would be lame.

@bleedinknuckles Nice very nice. Ive got a 66 tempest and I did a sprint replica with it. I have a clifford cam head work intake and 3 to 1 headers with a holley 570 street avenger. I put down ENGINE dyno 237hp and 246ftlbs. Mating it to a 200r4 outta a grand national with 3.90 rear gears. Still working on the frame off resto but I hope its fun only ran mine to 6200 rpm's what where you pushing it to here.
I estimate that to be about 235hp at the flywheel. If there was a 1960s european sports car sold with such engine power/specs, they'd be worshipping it like God's gift to motorists.
engine prolly has around 300 at the crank, and yeah a honda makes 200 net hp which isnt at the wheels like this one is. so safe to say this car is 100 net hp more than a honda and thanks to parasitic loss being hefty on older drivelines prolly about 50hp more... which isnt bad considering the huge tech difference. quite sad for the honda really not the poncho
@clinemichael YAWN......... 96 camaro had 285hp. Learn about FWHP and RWHP. Its quite vital information for B.S-ing about cars. This Inline6 has over 300hp at the flywheel. This dyno took place in high elevation... yet another variable. Thankyou good night.
@kolbpilot You're fairly correct there. The original Poncho I6 doesn't have bearings and the oiler is usually sort've anemic. This lead to a lot of them needing rebuilds after around 100-125k miles and revving them beyond 7000 just wasn't smart. However, Primatech makes a DOHC conversion head for these monsters capable of over 12,000 rpm, and these blocks are one of, if not THE simplest on the planet.
is that stock engine that scored 199 hp ? suppose to be 205hp ? there's one for sale near me (Sprint model), 6 cyl. guy is asking $27K and says it original, pretty much and runs just fine and good condition... what could it do 0-60 with it's stock set up ? I'm looking to buy an older car that's in decent shape, but not too costly to buy.. would like a 350 motor camero or mustang, but open to other models.. I say a Lemans convertible that was two tone burgancy and cream, but with brown interior... but looked pretty nice.. too... open to few models.. Any feedback on acceleration numbers on this Pontiac ? dare I ask what would be the fuel economy ratings ??
@bleedinknuckles my supercharged 300-6 takes on alot of the v8 red light racer;s new and old camaro's but when they get to about 60 foot off the line and here that eaton singing they back off and hope that nun of there friend's seen them get beat by us inline 6's,, THE BEST KEPT SECRET IN DRAG RACING THE FORD 300 6CYL
@bleedinknuckles Don't you find it funny how many kids who haven't driven for more than 2 years (unless you count Gran Turismo) that try to argue horsepower specs straight up as if they mean anything? A 6.75 liter Bentley V8 with two turbos should make more than the "piddly" rated 530 horse, or 300-400ish older models respectively, then you add the words "around 3800 rpm", and "774 Torque". Then you hear "My Dad's 454 Wagon makes 550 it'll smoke you." about a 2nd place ice-land speed record car.
Must be a custom ground crank. 292 crank would make it a 292, but to get to 302.5, you'd also have to bore it .070 over. The block is only capable of being bored .040 over.
@bleedinknuckles (cont) I mean it's like they completely disregard RPM, weight ratios, gearing, and anything else because somebody put a flashy number up. -My- Dad's 2010 Challenger with the 3.5 DOHC V6 and 5 speed autostick is faster than the 67 327 4bbl he had with a 4 speed M21, and it weighs about 900 pounds more.
You would think that a highly tuned Pontiac 250 OHC would put out close to a horsepower per cubic inch. Maybe not (I don't know), could be inherently in the head design, poor flow. Still cool to see these sixes being worked over.
From Leo: It probably would show another 50-75 hp on an engine dyno. There are power losses in the differential as well as anything on the fan belt and a street exhaust. In car dyno tests are always lower than engine dyno tests.
depends on if you want a race car and yeah it is a 100 hp more than what you have will smoke u in a race its like as if a 96 camaro vs a 69 were to race the 69 with 300 will beat the 96 with 200
I've been around cars close to 40 years and I've always like the Pontiac OHV motor. Even when I was a kid I thought Pontiac was ahead of it's time.
its overhead cam ...

I just bought the same exact car 68 Firebird OHC 6 cylinder and I love it!
200HP to the wheels out of a 50 year old I-6 is nothing to sneeze at. That's downright impressive.
Dude, it's stroked out to V8 specs. Not sure what they're trying to prove. drop a small block chevy crate motor in there for half the price and be done.

cool car , i like the fact it has the original inline six. Thank you for not ruin it by swaping a v8 in it. nice real nice
sounds sooo much better than a v8.. nice car!
@Bob Bob this is a 250ci bored and stroked to 302ci.
Perfect choice of Wheel and Tire style and size can you tell me what size and offset they are
Marcy D 15x10 and pretty sure it’s 3.75” or 4” back spacing...
Not bad for 6
Great color
Love that Pontiac

199 @ the wheels is about 220 @ flywheel.
Pretty good!

Lol you're right. I read in the late 60s the sprint birds that had em did quite a bit over 200hp. With a healthy dose of torque.
@BradRAjax Pistons are 30 over Probes, crower 6 inch rods. 292 crank as well.
I'm curious how high with the 292 crankshaft would allow this engine to rev with the OHC set up?
im a fire bird lover man but 200 hp is what a honda has stock lets crank it up!
Ok, buy one for yourself, and show us how it's done.
engine prolly has around 300 at the crank, and yeah a honda makes 200 net hp which isnt at the wheels like this one is. so safe to say this car is 100 net hp more than a honda and thanks to parasitic loss being hefty on older drivelines prolly about 50hp more... which isnt bad considering the huge tech difference. quite sad for the honda really not the poncho
I think now you'll need a BIGGER cam to go along with the 300 6cyl. Thank goodness the valve in that engine were already HUGE.
w41duvernay he just did that to the motor, along with ported head and triple Weber’s now makes 400hp at crank
What is the rear rim size and offset , great day 2 look !!
Joseph Grossi those are 15x10 cragers. I believe the offset is 3.75”, but not 100% sure!
certainly the most modern engine with its ohc! damage that is not done the same with the v8. it took over 20 years to do it with cadillac northstar

does anyone have video of the 6-cylinder 426 and 503 inches at some car?
Nice car, I'd love to have a inline 6 Firebird. Have you considered or have a Lump Port kit to your cylinder heads. just wondering.
Hope your using synthetic oil will all that extra stroke in that block.

ya exactly 396 is quite alot more hp man

@clinemichael PLUS... making this a RACE CAR is really not the point.
302ci is not L6 but v8 .the big morel6 was the 250ci whith 200/2005 hp .
Cubic inches has nothing to do with engine configuration. It's bored and stroked to 302ci.
title clearly says its stroked
