  • In this video, we go over the modem specifications that make the most impact in the performance and coverage you'll get with an LTE Modem - including those in Jetpacks, hotspots, smartphones, tablets, and routers.
We explain LTE Categories, frequency bands, carrier aggregation, and MIMO antennas.
It wraps up with a real-world performance comparison between Cat 3, 9, and 18 hotspots to show the difference.

I can't thank you enough for all the information you have provided on hotspots! We were at a rally in the fall and couldn't get online with our hotspot or our phones. (We didn't even have enough signal to make a phone call.) We just thought we were in a dead spot because of the mountains until another camper said they were able to get on without problems. The info in your videos and guides lead us to upgrade from our 6620L to an 8800L with utterly amazing results!! We have been extremely pleased in both urban, congested areas and remote rural areas. We are getting very good at window searching (we have an Airstream) to find the best spot and then we are off and running. Thanks for all the time and effort you put into explaining the different options and testing the different pieces of technology!

I just called Verizon the other day and said I live in a huge house with a metal roof out in the forest. He sent me the smallest jetpack you show there. I would have gladly paid for the higher end one. I still have a couple of days left to return it. This video is very valuable. Thank you so much for taking the time to do the video and I will be checking out your website. We have Centurylink DSL. I did a speed test the other day and the download wasn't even up to 1. :-( I'm just looking for other options as cable is not out here and most likely will not be. Again thank you.

I too went to the Verizon store and walked out with that small one, I only paid $5.00. It's not worth taking it back & paying the 'restocking fee'. But we will check out some better ones.

It only matters if the tower you are trying to connect to is using the other frequencies and if it is going to give you the higher speeds and not throttle the max speed you get even though your router is capable of faster speeds!!
For example I am currently using a device that is capable of 150MPS and the max speed I am getting is 25 MPS from my current tower which is a speed even the oldest cat 3 hotspot can receive!!
Unless they do a couple hundred speed tests over varying times their test iis meaningless as I can do 5 speed tests back to back on the same device and get huge differences in just a few seconds!

Thanks for all your info on the 8800l. I went to two Verizon stores in central Washington, one in Oregon and my persistence paid off when I got to southern Arizona. I finally found a Verizon store that would help me get set up with an account and setup my 8800l. Most didn't know about the 8800l and wanted to charge over the $65 for the prepaid unlimited plan. On quote was over $80. I really like the jetpack I got. The performance is great.

I live out in the rural area where getting normal internet is not an option. I have a choice between, Hughes net, and multiple other crappy satellite internet, been looking for a year, and found that Verizon's Mifi works really well! I have the best one they have the 8800L Jetpack and it exceeds far better than I expected, paired with their Pay as you go 70 dollar Unlimited plan, and it works amazingly since I do upload youtube videos, streaming is a bit iffy when playing a game and sending it to youtube, but it's far better than what I expected it to be. I have a Cricket phone, that gets less speed and this is an ATT area, which is interesting. While I get nearly 50-60 in home, and in town I get nearly 100 download on LTE, once 5G comes in, I'll be so happy.

I have a lake home that is on the other end of town from the nearest cellular towers. So I need the best reception I can get and external antennas would probably help in the window. Jetpack ELLIPSIS was about $199.99 awesome top pick, and for the Prepaid Sim Kit its only 25% of the Verizon Wireless Home Fios. The only available offer device was the Verizon Wifi, or TWC Spectrum 30 minutes Trial, but my favorite is the "LENOVO STICKR"..

Thank you for the educational video. I’m an RVer from SoCal. I recently bought a new RV and put a new Winegard system on top (before I saw your video) I was wondering, if I have a T-Mobile account (MetroPCS). Would I be better off buying from T-Mobile’s range of personal WiFi devices or can I shop around the different carriers or 3rd party for connection/price? My thinking is, if they are “like” devices (T-Mobile carrier & hotspot) they will “hardware handshake“ seamlessly and be less problematic. Again, thank you for the informative video. Edward

I found it amazing that you were considering the 8800L as a "flagship" option. Just yesterday I pulled it off my system and was wondering how much I could get for it on Craigslist... I bought the device about six weeks after it came out and have been using it for the last 13 months or so. Since then, I've traveled from Boston to Naples, across the central US, to Denver and then through Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, Texas and currently New Mexico. All of the places I've stopped at I've used the Open Signal app to identify the strongest nearby tower(s), climbed to the top of the rig and adjusted an omnidirectional antenna, and then dickered with the reception on my desktop. The best speed I've been able to obtain on the PC using Speedtest is always less than 0.7 Mbps for both upload and download -- and that's with a 400.00 WeBoost signal booster (thus, the antenna). One of the issues I've had with the 8800L is that I/ve never been able to tell what speeds it's actually capturing. The MyJetpack software shows only two arrows -- one up and one down, moving across the top of the screen; not very informative at best... (How did you get your values for the three modems toward the end of the video? I'd like to try them out!) After setting the modem aside, I swapped it out for my iPhone, to which I downloaded Speedtest. I was amazed to find that, with the booster, I was getting speeds of 40/50 Mbps, down and up. Still, there must be something that I'm missing. Using a USB Realtek Wireless Lan attached to the desktop, I'm still realizing less than a Mbps when tested on the PC. Should you or anyone in the community have some suggestions, I'd love to hear them...

That’s odd. We get awesome speeds with ours all over the place. Either you have a throttled data plan, or a broken unit.

Yeah its likely a throttled data plan. A lot of them drop to 100-600 Kbps once the soft cap is passed. I know our hotspot was all but completely worthless once we were throttled. Instead of saying that once you pass a certain amount of data "your speeds will be complete garbage" or "you'll think you are back on dial up in 1995" they tell you their plan offers "unlimited data." Which is technically true, in the same way that a vacation on a landfill will be "breathtaking."

Thank you for your videos very informative. We just purchased a new DP motorhome. I plan on setting it up to go over the road a couple months out of the year not completely full time. So we'd like to have are Wi-Fi working the best that we can get it today. Definitely will be picking up Verizon's hotspot 8800. We were also looking at the weboost Drive 4gx RV antenna. Your Videos suggest Netgear mimo is just as good for $27 on Amazon. Went to get it out of stock but now it's back $150 plus shipping. Do I really need an external antenna if I have the Hotspot 8800. Just plan on streaming movies surfing the net and good cell phone coverage. appreciate your help. We will be becoming members shortly. Thank you Bob & Michelle NJ

It's hard to say what you 'need'. Cellular boosters and MIMO antennas both have their place in a mobile internet setup. Here's our full guide to that: www.rvmobileinternet.com/cellularsignal

Try this source for your Netgear Mimo antenna. I believe it was Chris and Cherie who posted this source awhile back. www.macmall.com/p/NETGEAR-Wireless-Networking/product~dpno~40686168~pdp.bccdgjag?src=search&fbclid=IwAR15w3Kpoohf3PAnjFbm1xg09GJ7iVTfKEflSYkSdCyKq9_0DmVpoTmVabA&cjevent=6ce9cee32e0c11e9817c02c60a1c0e0e

Great, really fantastic video! I recentlypurchased the Oculus Quest 2. I do not currently have home wifi. My service provider is Verizon, so I got the Ellipse jetpack- category 3- not understanding the degree of difference. Now, Virtual Reality headsets need high wifi speed for maximum performance. So, I will get the-I believe it is-8800. The flagship. Money really is no object when it comes to... electronic devices costing less than a thousand dollars to me. I was just being cheap, but that was only because I did not realize the huge differences between hotspots. And I do get buffering on 360 or 4k and above videos. And the resolution leaves something to be desired, which I can directly attribute to wifi speeds as I previously had home internet to compare it to. So, now I will go back to Verizon and get the 8800 flagship! But I will keep the ellipse as well. It is okay to download games, just not so much streaming. And I need more than 30 gigs anyway. But a really informative video-I watch many tutorials- and very helpful. Thank you, and how about a tutorial on the Samsung Note 20 Ultra? I have one and trying to learn to utilize its many functions.

Glad the video was helpful. We are focused on mobile internet however, and don't cover consumer smartphones.
