The transition from This Beat Goes On to Switchin' to Glide is one of those transcendent moments in rock music, where you can't believe something this good exists. I was aware of this song because of my dad listening to album rock radio in the car in the '90s, but it's only now, closer to middle-age, where I can appreciate fully how great this is. Like "Driver's Seat" or "Ah! Leah!", it's one of those songs that's easy to fall through the cracks for years if not decades, but then you hear it again and just say "oh my god, THIS song!!!"

Everytime I hear this song, it's suddenly summer and I'm going northbound on the I-94 to Six Flags Great America (Gurnee, IL) and just over the tree tops to my left, I can see a section of the American Eagle rollercoaster and my adrenaline kicks in. THAT is where I go every-time I listen to this song.
And for that, I must thank The Kings for a great song that's truly a time machine for me.

We went there when our 8th grade class scored a free trip there. I remember this song on the radio of the bus! Of course the rest of my time in Johnsburg Jr High was hell. I was so antisocial and a target.... It was called Marriott's Great America at the time.

A while back, I worked in radio. I found out they had a remastered version of the CD. I wrote to find out how to purchase one for the station. They sent me a personal copy with a note from Zero to play often! And we did, every Friday at 5. I still have it...along with my mom's cassette from 1980!
We were happy to provide that, Bee Kay 5150, and pleased to learn it was used for airplay! And your Mom obviously had great taste in music!

I live across the river from Windsor. The best radio stations in the 80's & 90's were from Canada. Some great Canadian bands you never hear from mega-media conglomerate US stations.

I heard these totally rocking songs on the radio in Philadelphia, PA, in 1980. And I have read many of the comments here. All we have are moments, and it is clear that this band brought timeless, wonderful moments to so many. That is an incredible gift from The Kings -cherish it.

In my opinion, the greatest Canadian rock n’ roll song of all time. No matter my mood, this song makes me happy. And I live my life by the words “I don’t give a hoot about what people have to say, I’m laughing as I’m analyzed.” Zero knocked it out of the park with that lyric.

One thing I love about being Canadian is the amount of great artists our country has and continues to produce. I grew up in Southern Ontario and heard so many great bands that made an impact on my life, from the Kings to Max Webster to Rough Trade, so on and so forth. Thank you for giving us all great memories to cherish.

@@markd8469 I would never forget April Wine but they are well known at least across Canada and even had some success in the US, if I remember correctly I think they even had a couple of videos on Mtv in the early 80's. I was just trying to give props to a couple of bands that didn't get as much airplay and attention back in the 70s-80s outside of Canada or southern Ontario, Max Webster in particular.

Starting around 1983 or so, the largest rock station in Columbus, WLVQ FM96.3 started playing "This Beat Goes On\Switchin' to Glide" every Friday at 5PM. It became a tradition that went on for decades. (They still might do it for all I know.) This song became synonymous with the weekend and good times! So everytime I hear it, I'm flooded with 40+ years of great memories, everytime. It transports me back to being a late teen early twentysomething young man in the 80s getting ready to go out on a date or just hang with friends.

Oh, I have that issue too. I leaned that the presence of food and particularly beer causes the fibers in the clothes to shrink. This effect goes on for a while after the event occurs, so things just get smaller and smaller. Same thing happens to the springs in the scale, except they get weaker and misregister your weight. Also mirrors are affected, and the actual air around you gets thicker, causing objects to appear blurry.
Heard Alice Cooper play this on his radio show a couple weeks ago. Never heard it before that, now I'm stuck on it. Thank you, Mr. Cooper, and thank you to the band for writing this awesome song.

@@codyjoewhite2563 We kinda humbly agree with you Cody Joe White, and the process was itself a lot of work. We had source material of every kind, and had to get it all put into Final Cut and then we had the lyrics written out on big poster card sheets, then had different coloured markers running through-bad-not bad-good-better-best for each of the over 40 sources. And then had to put them in perfect sync because we hate out of sync cymbal crashes etc. Cuts are short because of tempo live vs the album soundtrack. It was like a job over a few weeks, 5 or 6 hours a day. Worth it!
from the opening guitar riff, to the great bass and the organ....everything just works. it's like the perfect party rock song to get ready for the weekend. have my older bro to thank for hearing this one.....he would constantly have it on the loop (chicago classic rock radio station) and still remember the first time i heard it. couldn't wait to hear it again. how this song never got huge is a mystery to me. it works on so many levels. and how an 80's movie soundtrack never used it is beyond me. AND, how was this song NOT in a guitar hero or rock band game?!?!?! was hoping when those games were in their heyday that this song would eventually get snatched up but it never did for some odd reason. it would have been PERFECT for one of those games!!!!

Thanks Mitch, because this came out the year before MTV there never was a video for it and so the timing for us wasn't great because we were a visual band...but...the videos from then mostly suck and so many years later we decided to make our own to be the basis of our documentary "Anatomy of a One-Hit Wonder". Both projects took a lot of work but we are happy with the results. The quick cuts are because it went out of sync really quickly from the different live tempos and we wanted it perfect.

Don't know why but I just love the line "Me and Zero request you in the Mercedes", and Dave points at Zero who gives a little waive. They probably did this 1,000 times but the way it is captured in this mix is just awesome. You cannot listen to this song, or songs technically, and not end up in a happy mood.
There was many different shots we could've used for that line, Chris, but the one you mention just had that certain thing that made it stand out. It's from the long gone Riverside Club in Oakville Ontario, our home town.
