Victorinox is currently considering updating its range with regards to the tool set. It will be interesting to see what changes they make.
For 87.00 USD, I will rather buy a SAK with no hesitation
Where do u see the 87 USD? The Full TI with all the tools sure. He shows off an alu one.
I thought all Saks had hesitation

7 seconds into the video. Thank you for letting me know that I don’t need to waste any more time watching lol
As italian: quality is great, but price is fancy.
Get Ruike/Boker instead.
Not really. For what you get it is a fair price.
Great review. I’ve been using one daily to eventually review. I got the titanium with M390. Love the size slotting in between the 58 and 91mm Victorinox. I wish the rest of the tools had a better steel but don’t plan on using it as a hard use multitool. What sold me is the titanium scales, M390 knife, and proper cut out to open the tools, much better than the Swiss nail nick.
Thoughtful and very fair analysis. No threat to Victorinox just yet from my pov.

Hi, a quick note: 99% of people are not into knives. When they need one for camping, hiking etc they choose Victorinox, everyone recognises the swiss cross which equals quality, end of story😁. By the way everyone around me thinks that Victorinox uses the best steel in the world, it's difficult to explain and even argue withthose. But most people(again 99%) don't cut that often with their Victorinox. So why upgrade and raise the price for just 1%. Many people won't like that but it's true. Cheers
You are spot on!
Agreed. I love my knives but the reality is I don't do a ton of cutting. For day to day stuff, the Victorinox steel is great!
Personally, I don't think Victorinox needs to worry about this just yet. I'd love to see Vic have some premium blade options, but Vic is just a better deal and has more varieties of implements.
for my personal preference, any SAK knife that I would consider carrying must have scale tools, with tweezers being a must, and then a pen/pick or both. I love there being new competition for Vic, but no matter how cool it is, no matter how superior the blade steel, if it doesn't have at bare minimum tweezers hidden somewhere in it, I would rather just carry either a folding knife or a multitool
I think the best part of this is pressure on Victorinox.
Konkurrenz ❗️ist immer gut🎉
regt geist u. Qualität an.😂 mbg🇨🇭
I like the half stop, the blade steel upgrade, and tool sets. I may have to give one of these a try. Thanks for reviewing Dom
Some people don’t like to pay high prices regardless of the quality and precision of the product. Some just want something that’ll “get the job(s) done” for the most reasonable or cheapest price. Most don’t do the research of the types of metals/steel/wear resistance of the components in a multitool, for example. These multitools don’t replace a properly prepared toolkit, so the multitool is just for those quick “on the spot” tasks, like the trimmer/blower/other machine they’re using at the moment needs a slight throttle adjustment or tightening a screw that is loose they happen to notice doing something else. Multitools are good tools to have in say a survival kit in a vehicle, or backpack or to have in a “just in case” set of handy things in a drawer, to tighten eyeglasses or make other minor adjustments. The expectation is to have the stocked toolkit, while the multitool is just something that will get an unexpected repair or temporary fix done to “get by” until a proper repair can be performed.
If they make a version that’s basically a premium Swisschamp then I’d buy one. If they use a better base steel and fix the scissors
Plus, no corkscrew, no awl, no tweezers, no toothpick. And it only costs twice as much as a V ictorinox. I can picture the big sales they will have.
420hc is perfectly fine for non knfe blade tools. Fairly stainless and certainly tough.
I like to see these options, but for these kids of tools I would probably stick with my SAKs- but I do like the half stop
Plus scales are a must for me...and would prefer a diamond file instead of a saw... and at that price the scissors need to be perfect !
I would argue base 420, when DONE WELL and I think fox would do well, isn't actually that bad. I regularly use 420 steel on my MAM portugal knives and it honestly does better than 8cr.
But more than almost any other steel how good it does depends on who's making it
I really wish I knew what the cost would need to be to offer every implement in 14C28N. $10 extra? 20? Easy to mass heat treat - not awful on grinders and shaping equipment - outstanding toughness. It's such an appropriate choice, if the price works. I'm convinced that if Sitivien can offer a knife in 14C for under 30, then a SAK competitor can do it for a reasonable price. But I don't know the actual numbers, and I sure would like to.
Fox Vulpis, Ruike are great competitor to the SAK. Nextool is innovating in the marketplace as well. Competition is good for everyone. My only issue with these tools are me biting my nails. Makes it difficult to get the tools out.
Do you have ocd?
Victorinox is coming out with a higher end steel for some knife blades next year and you can get Damasteel Victorinox knives but they are around $300. The new 2024 Farmer X L.E. with Damasteel is now out
And still no pocket clip! 😭
Great review Dom 👌
I think some Victorinox 111nm has half stop, for example Victorinox 0.8593.2W Skipper
I want some of those 3D Printed Tools you made! 🔨👍😁👍🔧
I like your vic videos a lot
We need a Cadet with scissors
Cadet x
Maybe the saw is more realistically trying to pull double duty by solving some serrated blade use cases more than having true saw intent?
while i do appreciate the upgraded blade steel, i think the price and the soon arriving line of bladeless victorinox tools makes the fox and other swiss army style knives a moot point.
I like my Victorianox SAKS. I will stick with the original

Having a dependable knife or multitool in your EDC can come in handy in so many ways; great review and comparison! - Justin @ Vanquest
Wish they’d make the cadet x already
Agree with your sentiments 100%, the scissors are easily my most-used implement! To not "upgrade" that tool steel as well, at the very least!? For shame!
74mm is Victorinox Ambassador territory, which is obvs no longer a thing. So, it’s Ambassador sized with a more traditional toolset, which is interesting. That said, if I’m someplace where I need a wood saw, I can’t envision a scenario in which an extra 15-17mm in length is going to be a problem. Going for looks in a pocket knife feels more urban than backwoods to me, and how often does one need a wood saw in an urban environment?
Looks great!
The only thing that comes close to competing for me is the Roxon KS2. I just did a video on that so I'm in comparison mode. Great video, thanks for taking us through it.
I heard victorinox could be bringing out a sak next year with a better blade steel
If they made a two layer Voyageur tool set knife I’d buy one yesterday.
There are some vacuum since Vix phase out 84mm scissors implement long time ago. As for me used 84mm Huntsman-small (or Artisan aka Fieldmaster-small) from eBay would be much more appreciated (if it would be possible to get for more or less same price), both qualitywise and because additional small implements inside same 4 layers.
Love your Channel, big time! however you've missed the boat with this Fox tool. Blade steel is way over emphasized in today's Gucci steel craze. That said, the size of this tool is not remotely going to impact the life span or reliability over the next 2, 5 or twenty years. It's just too small for "hard use". Victorinox has been the market maker forever. Why, because their steel choice is still working, some 100 years on now. Further, the size of a saw, in a pocket knife is really just silly / last case scenario user. If you're a true outdoorsman, you'd agree. Saw's this size for trap making/ setting, tent stakes, etc...notching, as you said. ts a pocket knife. Thanks for listening/ reading...again truly enjoy your channel and you do a great job!
....that price for a steel WORSE Than in Victorinox is not acceptable. I'm not even suggesting a supersteel. 440C is a very bottom of the barrel budget steel but still 2x as good as 420
RE the saw,
'It's only for what? Hold my pine needle tea!' ~ Felix Immler
Could you make a vid where you talk about the different kinds of steels and the suitable ones for different applications etc ?
It'd be really cool for those of us who are ignorant about the subject.
Thank you very much indeed sir 👍
tons of great videos out there already. But I make make one based on function.
@sterlingarcher46 blade hq has an interactive knfe steel guide on their website it lists all the major qualities of blade steels and how each steel stacks up. just google "blade hq knife steel guide"
I don't like the saw. It also looks clunky. The thing with Swiza is that I find it light and the tool set, blade, button lock, etc works well. One can legitimately say "Swiza is a lighter alternative" with pretty good lock up and tool selection, to a heavier Victorinox product. I don't see where this product fits in.
But then again I have massive prejudices because to me the minichamp is amazing! Things work, the scalpel knife and so called "pill crusher" have incredible applications. I mean a tool in this size range? Ditch the saw and give me a ballpoint pen... Or how about another blade?
It is handsome...
I would love to see Leatherman or gerber make a true USA made Victorinox competitor.
Real question anyone actually like the Ruike 6 in 1? It kind of seems like the took set i would actually use. My main 2 implements are scissors and and the knife for daily use.
I ordered the Fox Vulpis Titanium M390 model FX-VP130-4 TI from an Ebay seller and returned it for a refund. I don't know if it was defective or a factory second or designed as intended, but the scissors were almost impossible to dig out. They sat very low in the knife and I had to open the blade to get at the nail nick. (Yours might be different with the saw). On top of that, the scissors were subpar in operation. Great concept. Great size. Poor execution on mine.
Victorinox Huntsman has a similar tool set and can be brought in the UK for around £35 I can not see the Fox competing with that value.
The Fox Vulpis is £49.95 on Heinnie Haynes currently.
Edit: HH have LOTS of variants. Ti scales, Carbon Fibre scales and aluminium too.
@@nathski22The Fox vulpis with saw & scissors is currently £59.95 on Heinnie Haynes.
@@donaldcarr8766 yeah, I think the price I saw was the Vulpis 4 with no saw. Nice tho. If I ever lost my Victorinox Compact SAK I’d give this a try
Id rather buy a leatherman or victorinox on the used market or something from nexttool.
No toothpick?! No tweezers?!
I’m pretty sure the 420hc is the leatherman knife steel rather than the frame. 420 steel is pretty tough, eg some of the fanciest jewelry hammers are cast 420 steel. The vanilla 420a/b/c steels will have much more corrosion resistance than any knife steel and will bend where a 420hc or 440c would crack. And heat treating that complex a set of metal pieces would be incredibly expensive in post treat grinding or super human accuracy in the pre heat treat machining.
both frame and all implements are made of 420HC in Leatherman tools.
Hmm 87 USD is way too high for such tool set and size. Most would still go for SAK instead.
I'll go for Helfen by swiss tech. $22
Any company that wants to compete with victorinox has to, at least at the beggining, sell their products for less than a victorinox.
When will the video about the new Mikkel Willumsen Designed Chisel release???
havn't had much time to play with it, but soonish.
I think they got everything thing here right except the price. Knock off $25 and this will be a big hit!
The size is perfect, and the tools are good enough.
Or...bump up the tool steel to something respectable, like say 420HC or even D2 or Aus8...at the same price.
Just remember that SAK owns the price point with better tool steel and lesser blade steel, even delivering many more functions for less $$.
I admit that I love SAK but wish they upgraded just the knife blades. I carry my Sentinel or Huntsman just about every day. If I need pliers or a good file the LM Rebar goes in the pocket!
But Fox Vulpis might get its chance....if ...(coupons anyone???)
The scissors suck on these knives, at least on mine the rivet seems like it could be tighter ?
I have thought about peening the rivet to make it a bit tighter, any thoughts ?
wont help, blades are too flexible.
Why don't they just release a combined can and bottle opener and add a different tool in the Freed up spot
makes sense to me, like a philips
Would 30$ be a good price for a M390 vulpis (FX-VP108)? The small version just blade and brass scales!
umm..that would be insane price.
Insane in a good way?
I know M390 is a really nice steel, and it mostly comes to my preference/needs to get it or not, but a second opinion from someone with more experience is really helpful, especially when I haven't handled anything better than 14c28n or nitro-v, so thanks a lot!
The steel on Victorinox knives doesn't bother me because I always have another pocket knife on me for harder use. I use the Victorinox blade primarily to cut food at lunch. I also like that Victorinox has more options for tools. For example, I like having a fingernail file/cleaner tool, which I don't believe Fox offers at all. BTW, the Wenger models in the Victorinox lineup that have the locking blades have a half stop.
We still need a SAK Manager replacement...
for the cost I'll stick with Victorinox
I cannot remember the last time I needed a flat head screwdriver, except as a pry bar. But I use the Philips head on my Manager about once a week, minimum, often more. I don't understand why multitools keep putting in do many flat heads and Philips is so hard to come by. That should be the default.
When I see wide gaps between the tools,
I'm not seeing quality.
Victorinox has spoiled us lol. But there are good reasons to have space between tools. During heavy use its incredilby ieasy for tools to seize up if there is not enough space for grit to escape. this has happened to me many times with Victorinox over the years.
Italians are among the greatest product designers on the planet - Ferrari, Tumi, Gaggia Espresso Machines, Sophia Loren... However, I am not seeing their unique esthetic regarding this device. No differentiation.
I think just about all SAKs have a half stop.
?? not a single one I have as one.
After I wrote that, I went to my collection and looked. Only 2 of my 17 SAKs have a half stop, the Picnicker and the Adventurer. They are basically the same knife, just one has a corkscrew and the other has a Phillips. That's so weird,
I thought they all had a half stop. A knife Mandela Effect?
As soon as you said Italian, I knew it was going to be N690. I don't know why Italians are so married to this steel -- in my experience it is not that great and can be chippy.
your mic in every video i watch has a super strange almost skipping sound to it. I love what you do and have gotten some great multitool advice from you but it's really hard to listen to. Maybe the sample rate is off but it doesnt sound the same. idk, but it's just really odd.
Hmm, I'll check it
Hard pass for EDC.
I see a lot of people complain on the steel Victorinox uses. Has ANYONE had, or seen, a Victorinox with a bent tool, or rust, or bad finish out of the box? For over twenty years I have had some form of Vic and never has it failed on me. Anyone??
scales are ugly tools look solid
Just stay with the know Victorinox. Nothing to improve upon.
that...simply is not true...I can think of nothing worse than "good enough" mentality hehe.
@@maxlvledc I could hear your voice while reading your comment lol
Only Victorinox.
Never buy an impersonation of a Swiss Army Knife, especially one that costs more and delivers less capabilities.
