I was in the Army Reserve for a few years and on a training weekend or course, you'd spend the entire time with people you don't know outside it and often with people you've never met before. But over just a 36 hour period together, you get to know each other (for better or worse, although usually better) perhaps even more than many of your own friends, in a certain way.

I think a major factor in this shift is the advent of streaming services and the devices that can deliver them. In particular, there's been a shift in viewership of alternative media sources from the desktop/phone to the living room TV. In that sense, it's fair to say that these "alternative" sources are becoming "mainstream" now... just without the hammer-lock control of big-money advertisers which has been the downfall of legacy media's credibility.

Beyond that, there is little holding them together and government largess is reaching its limit with the national debt. How do you appeal to Jews and Muslims, Muslims and gays, citizens and illegal immigrants, etc.. Then there are policy conflicts like the war on poverty and importing poor people or cutting the military budget and raising tension with Russia and China.

These people are not able to have someone living in DC to go in and be physically present in the room the way legacy and mainstream media companies are. I am sure Lex Friedman, Tim Pool or Alex Jones could submit some very pertinent and important questions that the press core never would and they wouldn't have to limit the participation to the people in the room.

Trump should become the first prez to allow top political youtube or social media journos into the press room. I don't know who would best serve that role. Tucker Carlson is too big to do that sort of thing, but people like Max Blumenthal, Matt Taibbi, etc. It would break the brains of the NBC/CNN talking heads.

Maybe you guys overestimate your importance? Since when did you deserve anyone's time for that long? Rogan seems worth it, for his viewers. I mean, I really like these discussions, just don't get so full of yourself. lol Also, Kamala's other podcasts were long and good enough. You guys sounds insecure. You got the Trumper and it was so boring I had to stop. A good edit is better then 3 hours of an old man rambling about dumb stuff...and I would have expected Biden to be just as bad.

Yeah this is a horrible take. Politicians are elected officials that earned their positions under the guise of representation of the people. If they look to anyone with an audience whom the politician wishes to represent in office, then by definition that person is "worth their time". Trump did ramble for 2/3s of Rogans podcast, and what the left doesn't understand is that his willingness to do so showed a level of authenticity that democrats are unwilling to show.

Lex, you would be surprised by the number of conservatives who work in science, tech and medicine. I suppose that the difference is that people who work in government positions -- including academia -- lean to the left. This is because they are loyal to the hands that feed them. On the other hand, individuals who work independently in such capacities are often conservative. I've worked in government (NASA), academia as well as the Silicon Valley biotech and tech industries. Even in NASA and the Silicon Valley, there are more conservatives than the sector average.
As for the difficulties in interviewing left-wing leaders: I think that this is because people in the left find that they must hide their views for fear of alienating some of the different facets of their "coalition" of voters. They cannot say what they REALLY want to accomplish or what they REALLY believe -- because, for them, "silence is golden." When John Podesta's emails were hacked in 2016, one of the most profound leaks was the one in which a major Democratic Party donor commented about how the Democratic Party prefers "unaware and compliant citizenry."
So, for Democrats, this is why Kamala Harris was largely quiet when it came to specifics. Obama was all about generalized "hope and change" -- but never specifics on trade, energy defense, or domestic policy.
