Scot-Irish American here. Born Fighting is one of my favorite books, the first time I read it I could recognize my own family norms, values and traditions perfectly. Of course, being an American means being a mix of many cultures, but I could see the foundations of my people and it was honestly cathartic, just to have our history collected into a cohesive narrative like that.

He wrote 2 of my favorite books Fields of Fire a novel of the Vietnam war and A sense of Honor about the US Naval Academy during Vietnam era. Another great book is the Nightengale’s Song by Robert Tinnernberg which goes into his service in Vietnam. It is mostly about Iran Contra though.

There is a documentary based on this book. "Born Fighting -The Scots-Irish". You can find it on youtube in parts 1 and 2 on the youtube channel "Forged in Ulster". It is an interesting documentary; albeit, a bit romanticized.
While most of the Scots-Irish come from Ulster Scots (lowland Scots and border Scots/English who first were settled in northern Ireland) there is some admixture (~10%) of "Pennsylvania Dutch" German and French Huguenot in the Scots-Irish. You see that in some of the German and French names (eg Crockett) in and around Appalachia.

Scot-irish doesnt mean anyone from scotland and ireland. Its an specific group of scottish people that moved to ireland to spread protestantism by the king of england. Thats why northern ireland is a country and part of the UK. It also explain why there was so much conflict in that region.

And the Scots-Irish weren’t just Scottish, the North of England had always been rebellious against the king. The Scots-Irish were just lowland Scots and northern English who were ungovernable, but at least they weren’t Catholic at least that’s the way the King saw it.

Penn was a Quaker and his fellow Quakers were pacifists, even in the realm of personal self defense... The PA colony was only safe in the very eastern corridor of Philadelphia. So Penn specifically went around lobbying the Old World, specifically the Scots-Irish to come to the Colonies in order to defend themselves from Indians who were everywhere along their frontier. Many of them also went and populated all of East Tenn, what became Western VA and the western part of N and S Carolina's... the part of the Confederacy that were most pro-Union during the war and had almost no slaves.

Excellent segment! But I'd point out you pictured a Dutchman on your cover pic - yes TR was Scot's Irish on his mothers side, but his father's family was staunchly Dutch and he always viewed himself as a Dutchman. I will admit his martial side was most likely inspired by his maternal uncles exploits during the Civil war, while his father paid for a substitute to serve in his place.

I want to call out the so called "fierce individualism" of the scots-irish. As an irish born person who grew up his whole life in scotland, this shows how little americans understand about us. The one thing you would characterise the irish catholics and the scots with is FIERCE COLLECTIVISM, we have and continue to be more focues on the collectivr than the individual. There are many reasons why this is the case; English colonialism and conquest over 800 years of both people history, the erasure of our cultures by said english, the lack of economic prospects and higher percentage of working class/psuedo serfdom conditions in which these oeople lived in. You dont get 800 years of continuous resistance to an external colonial force because of individualism, its collectivism.
Where the individualism may come into play for these immigrant pools is most likely due to america gebuinely being tje first chance they had to have individual liberty, which would have never been accepted under english rule. As well as the potential opportunity that provided to these historically impiverished and oppressed people. Andrew carnegie (from my hometown dunfermline) is a good example of this. But i think its way way too simplistic and counter factual to claim we are cultures steeped in individualism, thats more of an english concept

    • @benn2946
      @benn2946 วันที่ผ่านมา

I think you're mixing up the concepts. Northern Europe as in (Scotland, Scandinavia, Netherlands, France) are countries that rank most highly on the Individualism scale. (see Geert Hofstede map). Which means respect/tolerance for Religious Freedoms, Freedom of Speech, Rule of Law, Self Expression. It's also linked to Protestantism. These are Guilt-based cultures. The Scottish Enlightenment movement enhanced this.
Comparing to Collectivist Cultures, such as India, Turkey, Bangladesh, China... the focus is not on the Individual but on the Family level, and these are also Shame-based cultures.
The British Isles are considered the most Free people in the world, before the America Revolution. So the immigrants didn't just go there for individual liberty, they went there for land and opportunity. The landed gentry owned all the land in Scotland and England, so migrating West was a chance to find/make it economically.

“Screw you attitude” is going up the same alley as thinking that the British empire was an English thing when in reality, the Irish and Scottish all had significant roles. You also then talk about oppression, do you realise who was in Ireland? It was the Scot’s, not the English you dummy. It was also Irish soldiers that were responsible for the Boston massacre. You ask most Americans and they would have said English. In their mind, the rest were victims of the made up English oppressor.

Thank you for this view - Hillbilly Elegy is now famous. A much better book, easier for reading and understanding the good and the bad of lives of this demographic is "Somewheres in the Middle: a creative memoir", by Frank Gordon, (2020) was self-published but has great reviews by those who read the book.
in school, everyone was encouraged to tell their ethnic background story EXCEPT any 'early whites', aka, Scots-Irish along with the British in the Southern states. "Albion's Seed" (1989 goes into the demographic details even better. As a child, it didn't seem fair, our ancestors had put hard work into making wilderness into farms and towns, putting education and thought into setting up a good system for government, but hush, don't say anything about that. Are early arrivals all rich? Nope. You've got to have some greedy dynasty-minded ancestors who had NO bad luck, accidents or illness, to be rich so much later. We aren't good at slick advertising, either.

@ equal opportunity or EEOC is just the old term for DEI. The the idea that meritocracy dominates this country more than money, connections, and nepotism is pretty funny since the term “meritocracy” was a term used ironically by the person who created it. It’s just something that the rich use now to say they deserve their place on top rather than the old “birthright nobility”. Now they just convince you that they earned their fortunes with “small loans of a million dollars”.
Not to say there’s never been a truly self-made billionaire but most of them are born into to money and have plenty of access to connections and capital and get a nice cushion when they fail.

  • @Jos-z5v

You mention Scotland and Ireland being oppressed, you still aren’t aware that those occupying Ireland were Scot’s. They weren’t English. The orange order and UVF had Scottish and Ulster scot founders. Scottish Protestants are still the most motivated unionists in Britain and Ireland. This unionist identity that the Scot’s were the most motivated in was central to Britain’s rule in Ireland. So stop with the Scot’s being oppressed crap. They were the ones running things in Ireland, not the English.
