    I was surprised to see a swather in this day and age.it brings back memories of swathing wheat in front of an old 6601 John Deere pull type combine on my cousin's farm.this was ack when I was just starting to work on the farm and he was my first boss.

    Pretty interesting. Looks like the guy running the square baler could slow down a couple MPH though, that 348 didn't look like it was feeding that long stem stuff too well.
    Really cool to see that style of combine header, I'll admit I had never seen one of those before.

    That header for the combine is an interesting concept. I’m sure it saves on wear of the combine.

    I didn't know Deere ever went back to making their own swathers again, in this part of the world you only see the MacDons painted green. The triple delivery header was a MacDon concept I believe, lots of the swathers from the 90's were set up for triple delivery

    My grandad used to buy wheat straw in square bales for use as mulch for his strawberry 🍓 plants that he grew commercially in the 1960's wheat straw was used because of seasonal weed control and to prevent soil erosion due to irrigation!

  • @brettengland192
    @brettengland192 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    We achieved the same thing by running the combine header right on the ground and disabling the straw chopper at the back. Then we raked the straw into a windrow and bailed the straw.

    • @bigtractorpower
      @bigtractorpower  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The difference in this method is long straw. The combine chops the straw up. Even a walker machine breaks the straw up. This merging with the stripper head on the combine and the Swather produces the longest straw possible to weave the erosion mat.

      @Ronald.Golleher 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    So I guess I missed something..what do they use the straw for again? Erosion Mats?

  • @aidanbrennan7389
    @aidanbrennan7389 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Question from a non farmer! The combine cuts the heads. Then the other machine cuts the straw and lays it into two rows. Why not just use a combine harvester. I never seen this process before. Greetings from Ireland.

    • @bigtractorpower
      @bigtractorpower  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Typically a farm would bale right behind the combine. In this case to make the straw mats to control soil erosion long straw is needed. A combine chews the straw up too much and leaves the straw too short to weave into a mat.

    • @Ronald.Golleher
      @Ronald.Golleher 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like this is more for the use of the straw needing the longer less damaged straw from this process rather than having it go through the combine and be threshed and torn up. Along with the use of a draper head, less damage to the straw.

    • @matthewknudslien1330
      @matthewknudslien1330 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      With the Mud discount it would be more like $138,000. If they lease it for 3 years but and roll it over they could sell it for $150,000. Plus 3,000 ac would be about $1million in Straw. With Prices going up I have sold 1 year old equipment for more than we paid for it. It’s a different concept but it works if you have the Capital to do it.

      They do harvest the wheat grain first with the Shelbourne Reynolds on the S780 combine show. It leaves the stems standing to swath.
