    PLEASE READ THESE THREE NOTES:
    1. I cut some details out of the video for simplicity’s sake, but I still want to give all of the information, so here it is: I originally bought the red jumper no17 (the turtleneck) for my mom as a gift, and I wasn’t planning to buy myself another sweater until next winter. Weeks after it arrived, I learned that my mom much prefers a cropped or hip-length sweater and I realized that the silhouette of the no17 isn’t ideal for her. I went back and bought the jumper no15 for her, but rather than returning the no17, I just kept it for myself and altered my budget accordingly.

It’s important for me to explain because if this hadn’t happened, I don’t know whether or not I would actually have bought a second sweater this year. I feel confident that I would have bought another no17 eventually, but I might not have done it so very soon after the first purchase.

    2. I’m aware that if one does not perceive there to be a vast difference between an earthy brown wool sweater and a bright red wool sweater, one might consider it ironic that in this video I call the brown one “the last of its kind that I will ever buy” and then 40 minutes later tell you that I bought another one. When I say “I’ll never buy another sweater like this” I’m referring to overall aesthetic-the way that the cut and the color work together. To me, even though they are the same fabric and silhouette, these two sweaters are totally different and occupy different roles in my life. It didn’t occur to me until I was editing that some people might not see it this way and might think that I contradicted myself in the video. I wish I had explained it on camera, but here we are.

    3. I know the b-roll footage is a bit shimmery and warpy. It was our first time trying to shoot footage like this and it was incredibly shaky, we tried to stabilize it and this wiggly business was the best we could do! It will be better next time!

    THANK YOU FOR WATCHING!

I didn't mind the b roll footage, personally. I like the red sweater better in a way. I think it is the softer look of the material. I personally don't much like wearing red tops but I love red accessories. Our complexions are much different. Red really is a good color for you.
I did some second hand shopping recently on ebay. I bought a purse that I love from coach in 2 colors. Black and red. My original was green. The corner seem blew out on me. I'm going to see if I can have it mended. I've loved that purse for probably 3 years, maybe 4 years, and I actually got it second hand. Someone I know at work was reselling stuff he picked up at a pawn shop. $25 for that beauty and because it was luxury, it lasted me so long, even though it was used. I expect though that the two colors I bought will be rotated out depending on outfit, vibe / mood, etc. Sometimes I like a little variety. They are different in color, but the red is a true leather and the black is more suede. Different textures in my life!
Anyway, one minimalist I watch, Patricia from A Small Wardrobe, has recently come to accept and endorse having repeat items you love. I own 16 long sleeve shirts in the same style. Some are scoop neck, some are v neck. I'm not particularly picky but I do prefer the v neck a bit. Either way, other than the neck line, they're the same shirt. I have 4 black ones, 3 royal blue, 3 grey, 2 burgundy shades and 4 in varying shades of purple. I wish they made like an emerald green. I'd probably buy at least 2 of those. They're not expensive luxury pieces and in some ways it shows. They are fast fashion. Other than the stitching around the cuff though they hold up great. I always roll my shirts up so I never really care any way. My point is, if you love this style of shirt, it's not all that crazy to me for you to have it in 2 colors. I would understand if you buy a few more over the next couple of years. I personally love having repeat garments that I love. I will say though, I have been taking into consideration what you said in a declutter I think, about how when you buy jeans you only want multiple pairs to have a variety of styles. I think it makes sense in a way to have 4 different styles of jean, and maybe not have a duplicate. You can wear jeans a few times before they need to be washed so it works out.

I'd love to know how your mum finds the fit, and her height (once she gets it), cause I'm 5'3" and the no17 would make me look like a toddler in my dad's jumper.

I learned to crochet at a young age, so whenever I want a sweater I “shop” around TH-cam for a sweater pattern to make. For me, making a sweater takes 60-100 hours, so I personally see each sweater as an investment of my time and also a way for me to create pieces that fit me perfectly and fit my aesthetic.

Fellow crochet lover here! I haven’t embarked on making a full, adult sized sweater yet (have made a few, simple baby sweaters though), but I’ve always wanted to, and I’m feeling ready to take on the challenge. 💜
If it’s not a problem, may I ask for some crochet sweater video recommendations? (I’ll start my own search for sure, but I’d love some input or advice from another crocheter!)

I used to sell knitwear and work in alterations. Pilling is when surface fibres knot together due to friction, and it’s pretty much unavoidable and this not considered a flaw or an indicator of poor quality. Some fabrics are way more prone to it than others and cashmere is the worst in my experience. Shaving your clothing with a regular men’s razor or a machine like you have is the best way to get rid of it and eventually the pilling will reduce as the ‘excess’ fibres are cut away. 🖤

    • @machupikachu8349
      @machupikachu8349 3 ปีที่แล้ว +17

Actually, pilling occurs when the yarns are made with shorter fibers and friction occurs. so if the item is made from a wool with long fibers whether it’s cashmere or merino or alpaca, etc., it will pill less and wear more beautifully. knitwear made from longer woolen fibers will be, and should be, much more expensive.

@@violetviolet888gentle friction with a mild detergent if the stain is not set. If it’s set… you can try a bit of lemon juice and baking soda to try and lift the stain out of the fibers, or rubbing soap on the stain and wait for a few hours, then rince.
If it’s a grease stain, rubbing dish soap on it until it’s gone is the best thing I know.
WHATEVER YOU TRY NEVER USE CHLORINE BLEACH !! It dissolves protein-based fibers (wool and silk) and you’ll make holes REALLY QUICKLY. If you get bleach on a wool piece run for a sink or some acid (it will balance the alkaline bleach) and hope for the best.
Oxygen peroxyde (hair bleach) will discolour it (nice if it’s a dark stain on light fabric) without dissolving the fibers.

Lol when I see people in Montana wearing beautiful natural fibers, in elegant, and aesthetic knit pieces like this, with nice looking walking shoes, I immediately think "ah, European tourists," and I am right most of the time! If their shoes are mucky barn boots, they are local or Canadian. Americans wear expensive, branded athleisure but rarely these type of beautiful pieces, esp on vacation.

I recently spent an afternoon conditioning my leathers. Some boat shoes, a pair of cowboy boots, my evening shoes, a woven leather belt and my thrifted everyday shoulder bag. A couple of these items I’ve had for twelve years or more, but I wear (minus the evening shoes) them so much. I knew I appreciated these items, but restoring their glow really made me look at them in a new light, akin to falling in love. I wear them with ease, they help me make sense of how I look and move through my environment.

most clothing companies that sell "one-size-fits-all" clothing don't actually sell clothes that fit all body types. I'm glad to see that this brand does. however I do wish they had more pictures of plus-size models on their site.
EDIT: want to point out that while their sweaters seem to fit a wide variety of sizes, their other one-size-fits-all clothing definitely does not. I understand that it's expensive for brands to have all sizes in stock, I just wish the default size wasn't small.

Yes, clothing can be an investment, but it’s rare for us regular humans who change size. That said, I bought a red, swing, funnel necked raincoat with a wool button-in lining that I have worn for over thirty years. I love it; it makes me feel brave. It was a major purchase for me at $500. But its cost per wear is now in the pennies. The lining is trying to die but I just restitch it. Had to replace a couple of lost buttons. It still makes me feel brave and garners compliments. If you can find something that does all that, then it is a treasure, even at a steep price. I really enjoy your videos. Oh my god Hannah please learn to knit!!!! I strongly suggest you look up the designers petiteknit, my favorite things knitwear and ozetta, they have a lot of very babaaesque patterns anyone can make. As a fellow sweater lover I started knitting as a teenager bc I couldn't find/afford the sweaters I wanted and now that I'm older and able to buy 100% wool yarn I feel like an absolute queen in my fully hand knit, made to measure natural wool sweaters. The community is also amazing and there are many wonderful knitting podcasts here on youtube where people regularly go on 50 min tangents about wool and sweaters (sounds familiar?)

This was SUCH a good review! So thorough and lots of good food for thought. I love what you said about the term "investment pieces" often being a sales tactic - it's so true. Really, you can have an "investment piece" type of relationship with any garment you love, regardless of the price point. And I agree that aging really helps. Turning 32 this month, I feel like I finally have a really good grasp on my style and what I like to wear, and more confident that buying expensive, good-quality things won't be a waste of money. Also, by the time you hit your 30s and 40s, you've seen so many trend cycles come and go, and it's easier to realize what you'll always like. For me, one example would be clogs. I wore them 15 years ago, the trend came back around and I was like, "Why did I ever get rid of those? I still like them, so I'm going to get a pair. But this time, when they are 'out of style' again, I'm just going to keep wearing them instead of caring what's 'in fashion' and what other people think."

ROI (return on investment) and ROE (return on experience) are definitely two major factors in the marketing, advertising, and sales world! A lot of companies also gauge an ROE when investing money, so why shouldn't we, as consumers (at least to a certain point)? Making cognitive decisions like this has taken a lot of training, because I was also shopping my feelings before in 2019. Very much appreciate your take on your experiences as the holidays put me in a small tailspin. It feels refreshing to be open about budgets, spending habits, and making investments as it looks to us!

This is how I feel about my Melenzana sweatshirt/ dresses. I blew my clothing budget for the summer in one swell foop on three garments, but I knew the second I had them I would wear them until they stunk, wait till they are washed, and wear it again. I too feel like the $250 I spent wasn’t a lot of money for being warm and comfortable every single day.
It’s also got the ugliest, but most practical hood for outdoor activities. It’s literally the top-half mid-layer I’ve dreamed of for YEARS. Getting them this summer was hard (they had to institute appointments cause they were selling out each day) but 100% worth it!

the 30 times thing made me want to calculate how times i've worn my most expensive piece of clothing. it's a leather jacket i bought 12 years ago with the idea that i would never need another fall/spring jacket again. if i'm being modest with my calculations (because these days the winters are so mild it's become my mild-weather winter jacket too) i have worn it 1800 - 2000 times! and it's still going strong! some pieces really can be "investments". and i've only bought a good denim jacket for warmer weather during these 12 years. am i tempted to buy other things? all the time! but they will never live up to my beloved leather jacket, and having realised i've worn it 2000 times(!!) makes me want to never wear anything else and see how many times can i really wear it in a life time.

These kinds of videos are always helping me to proccess my feelings about shopping, wanting new stuff and being content with what I already own. Like some kind of anti retail therapy.
I wish that everything in this world could be so thorougly reviewed to help make better purchasing decisions. I have become so particular about clothing items (fit etc.) that I dont' like many things you can find in the stores anymore. Great for my wallet, but annoying when I really need a replacement.
Also, I agree with you that the simple packaging actually should be perceived as "above" fancy packaging. I just wrapped christmas presents in old brown paper and newspaper, which looks very "eco". I'm kind of scared that it might be perceived as cheap or unintentional but on the other hand I think it should be superior to new wrapping paper that only goes to the landfill.

I have been knitting my own sweaters for the past 12 years, but I still ask a lot of these same questions about the yarn fiber/color I choose to knit them in. What kind of dye do they use, what type of fiber it is, how will the fiber affect the shape of the garment, where is the fiber sourced from, does it pill, what type of yarn base is it, how annoying will it be to wash, how many yards will it take, how much is each skein?
It takes me a while of planning to pull the trigger on making something because of how obsessive I get over it. 😂

Hi Hannah! I loved watching this. I’m an avid sweater knitter and designer, so it was interesting hearing more about a machine-knit piece like this. These kinds of designs are very popular in the hand-knitting community, particularly amongst Danish designers like Petite Knit and My Favourite Things. It’s good to see that the style and type of ethical clothing is also available to non-knitters. FWIW, you’re not wrong that your No. 17 will have an initial big pill before the pilling settles down. This is definitely a bit of a ‘thing’. However, I would expect the softer, dyed sweater to pill more as soft yarns tend to be more prone to pills in my experience.

This is such a great review. The wool type sounds like an Icelandic fisherman’s sweater my mother knitted in the 1980’s from wool she ordered from Iceland. She had to knit it with a little trash can next to her for all of the hay she pulled out of the fibers. Long story short, I’m still wearing that sweater decades later. The elbow needs minor repair but it’s been keeping me warm for more than 30 years. Quality is rare now but it helps to remind me that my family members for generations were able to have quality things in part because they developed skills and taste to be able to make some clothing items for themselves.

just wanted to say that I used the lint device thingy on a pair of sweatpants and the blade cut into the fabric itself and made small holes in them. they weren't expensive or anything, so I wasn't super upset, but it's a warning for those that are using it on investment pieces. I think you have to pull the fabric really taut as you go over it with the device and some areas are probably going to be more tricky than others, like the sleeves

They have an old man screen print the word Babaa on the paper bag which makes it more special! I collect the cards and paper bag for future use or when i decide to sell mine (but that wont probably happen). I get that it is expensive and the sizing can put you off but i'm 4'11 so i buy from the size 8 from the kids section (i bought 1 wool jumper and 1 cotton) which is equivalent to XXS. It is perfect for my size. If it is too expensive for others, there are other brands like Kowtow

Ahhh I love the idea of a thick raw wool sweater but I’m extremely sensitive to scratchy fabrics. This is due to both having very sensitive skin that gets very easily irritated and rashy as well as being neurodivergent with sensory issues. I have literally broken down in tears or a full blown panic attack because a fabric (not just wool) was too scratchy. I have learned that more than appearance, the feel is my make or break.

I have never shied away from buying expensive knits because I value the quality. Most don't last forever because I do like a softer fiber like cashmere, merino wool, and both of those fibers blended with silk. I still have had nice garments last for years and many scarves so far forever. I think this company wouldn't be for me, because while I can tolerate natural fibers, things that are too scratchy can give me a form of hives and I would hate to be limited to just the bright colors. Also, I am petite. I am not thin right now, thanks COVID, but I have a small frame, so in oversized pieces I usually require a small or x-small, so that is looks neat baggy, and not playing dress up baggy. I guess I could wear the fitted styles, but I do like oversized things. I get that they're saving costs, but that is always the excuse brands use when they stick to the status quo in sizing.

Regarding care, I was surprised that you didn't mention hanging wool pieces out in the wind. I find that my woollens - surprisingly, even undershirts! - stay fresh for a long time that way. Cold and heat also kill larvae and germs. I buy pieces from an Icelandic company, and as I remember, in the care instructions for 100% wool they recommend hanging pieces outside. In any case, it seems to be common practice in Europe where I live.
