Thank you for this. I had a jammed CD in my BOSE WAVE radio. I followed your video and immediately saw the problem - broken CD close/reject drive belt. I could not find a belt small enough so I called BOSE Customer Support and was told that that they do not sell spare parts and the agent told me that her recommendation was to send it in to BOSE and they would repair it for $125. I went to my local hardware store and matched up the broken belt with an O ring that looked like a good fit, installed it and the CD player worked like a charm.
Thanks to your clear and concise instructions and video I was able to deal with Disc Error and remove a stuck disc. I believe the error was mine as I was in a hurry and following the ejection of a disc I was too keen to insert another disc. My Bose Wave Music System III, interestingly was made in the Republic of Ireland, is well over ten years old. I will just have to treat it with more respect and not rush.
It's very elegant design how Bose Engineers made that way to service them very well, and it's not too hard to repair them. Unlike any other leading product, sometimes it's kind of challenge to disassemble the components and get it repair and move on. But for Bose, huge thumbs up for me two because, the quality is ultimately excellent.

Picked one of these up at a garage sale for $5 US. Seller said CD was intermittent. Mine has the CD player on top under a flip up lid. It took about 10 seconds with a cotton swab and some isopropyl alcohol to clean the laser. Now works perfectly. I’ve learned a lot from your videos, and after having left the radio/tv repair business around 1980, I’m back tinkering again thanks to you and a few others. Keep up the good work and don’t let the trolls get to you!
Bose are the best designs ......... For such a small unit it puts out big volume , and clear as a bell at full volume...... I remember Paul Harvey advertising those in the 80's . A friend of mine brought one to my radio shop for me to see if they would last in the salt air at Holly Beach, La. (which is on the Gulf Coast of Southwest Louisiana) I was impressed with the design and the sounds of it .... It was there when Hurricane Rita hit and totally took their camp away , Everything was destroyed in that area..... Nothing but bare sand and ground for 70 or so miles to the east ............ So almost 20 years years later it worked perfect , and would still be if they hadn't left it behind .........
Sometimes, "the only thing you can't fix is faulty customers" as the old service industry saying goes. Decent design for BOSE - and a relatively simple diagnosis/repair. The owner is lucky that it was just 2 discs together in the tray and not something more serious that could have been expensive to fix.
Am I able to use a soft clip to use as a jumper..I ise to use em when did electronic soldering in San Jose. Kinda looks like a paperclip but barely grasps..for shorting
Hi there, I've just looked at a Bose System 3 Cd drive. When I removed both covers, I discovered that the wheel that comes down on the CD was loose in the drive. After spending lots of time researching how to have it go where the 3 arms hold it, I manage to throw the timing off. Bummer, I was having so much fun.
Good precaution to protect the optical pickup from ESD, especially during winter in Canada where (as you know) the ambient humidity will be very low, so the chance of building a static charge will be very high. And my problem with Bose is not that they sound bad. I believe they do sound good. Also, this particular example appears to be built very well. However, Bose tends to command higher prices than what I'd be willing to pay new. I would happily buy Bose equipment if I can find what I need from them at prices I'm willing to pay, which I did with a couple of Bose Companion 2 systems, a Bose MediaMate system, and a pair of Bose 161 speakers for my Sony PVM-2530. But, that's just me.
I bought a refurbished Bose AWRcc .Every time I want to listen to the fm, and press one of the p/s that I had put in with the double beeps, all of them are gone. If I leave the power on, the p/s are there. But when I return, turn on the radio mode, the same exact mystery p/s comes up instead of the p/s that I had not put in comes up. I repeat and p/s in again that I prefer are available. But the same mystery presets appear. This is the same scenario again every time. Is it the radio or the remote?
Have really enjoyed your videos. Would you happen to have a video on how to replace the optical laser lens mechanism on this Bose unit? CD player was making a "clicking" sound during disc start up, looks like a common problem with these units. Thanks again for sharing your experience and knowledge to help us weekend DIY warriors!
Often, the silicon lubrication on the screw that moves the laser dries up. I opened mine up and added some fresh silicone lubricant and after moving from the first track to the last a half dozen times, it works great again. My recurring problem is the disc not fully loading. ;)
That was a real simple fix ! It amazes me to know that the laser diode that puts out a strong beam of in phase light can be destroyed by a light static charge, I know the technical electrical reason, but it still amazes me anyway !! :-) :-).
My auntie has that and I like the sound quality. The only thing I don't like with that model is all functions are on the remote control. There is not a single button on the unit that if you lose the remote you're in trouble. Although you can still eject the disc by disconnecting it from the power outlet then plug it back.
Thank you so much for this. I have an identical Bose system with a different CD problem. The CD insertion mechanism struggles to accept many discs. It's kind of sticky as the disc goes, and often comes up with read error. I haven't opened it up - it could just be dirty I don't know. I would really appreciate your thoughts before I do. Have the older cd top load version also made in usa. Accidentally dropped it. AM radio now doesn’t work, everything else still does. Any suggestions on the fix? Thank you
Great video. Would you happen to know how to solve an issue with the disc drive that closes too early when you try to insert a disc? That’s the issue I have. Someone told me it has something to do with the sensor. Any suggestions?
If it’s slot load, I would watch the LCD to see if it goes off when the loading stops. It’s capacitors that need replacing on the PCB that is located under the CD drive under the shield. There are videos on TH-cam with the location and values and even links to replacement parts for this.
I have the same clicking issue but there was one one CD stuck in there. I got the CD out but when I put in a different CD it still clicks. Any idea on how to fix that?
Excellent video. Im having cd jamming issues on my seldom used Bose Wave unit. Its elegant cd loading system is complex, & prone to having problems. The old fashoined manual top loading system is simple foolproof, but not elegant admittedly. Great video Sir. P.S. You have a great voice for "Talk Radio"!!! Best Wishes!😂

Hey if you're still checking these older videos, im running into an issue with the same model making that clicking sound as it tries to read the disc. The part you mentioned looks bent is the same on mine, so I think thats just how it's made 🤷♂️
Often, the silicon lubricant on the screw that moves the laser back and forth seems to collect enough dust to keep it from bein as lubricated as it should - just add a little silicon grease with a long cotton swab (don’t need to remove anything, you can see the screw at about 5:03 if you freeze frame - it’s a screw on the bottom of the silver drive unit, at about a 45 degreen angle to the front.
Could you do a follow up on that solder bridge you placed on the CD ribbon cable? Almost seemed like just a random drop placed willy nilly. Though I'm sure there's more to it than that.
I put the solder bridge on the cable right where it was supposed. to go. That was an exposed tinned copper pad just for that purpose. Every optical block has the exact same thing on it, or it has a shorting switch. I can do another video and show where the shorting pads on on various optical pickups.

Great information! I have a question you might be able to help me with. My Bose Radio CD keeps saying all of my disks are unreadable. We tried cleaning it with a CD cleaner disk and also with canned air. Everything I'm reading online says the laser lens probably needs to be cleaned. This video was helpful in figuring out how to take the unit apart but I still can't figure out where the actual laser lens is that needs to be cleaned. Do you have any info on where it's found on the unit? Thanks!!!
take the tiny screw on the R of CD player jiggle it off.take tiny screw on L. jiggle cover off. lens is right there! good luck! Qtip clean worked for me!
I own the same model radio AWRCC1. My cd player is not working. When I push the CD button on the remote, the display does not show "CD". If I mechanically insert a cd into the player part way, the cd does not eject or insert via the load motor(the belt is ok). Both ribbon cables are ok. Thinking that it is an IC. Any ideas please? I am a tech, just have not worked on any Bose radios. Thanks
Mine does that too, I have to have another CD that I use to guide the CD all the way in, I suspect there is some dried out rubber piece that is supposed to be pulling the CD in. It probably needs a wipe with some isopropyl alcohol and some rubber sealant treatment (like used on RV seals). 😊
The little levers you mention at 9:00 are stuck in the wrong position and are blocking me from inserting a disc, even though I’m sure there is none in there. Maybe I’ll need to replace the spring. Thanks for the video!
I mostly fixed jukeboxes, they all used philps players. I did see those pads. Some had an adjustment pot on the ribbon. These were from the industrial division. All on metal chassis. You could take your fist and pound the chassis and no skip after you installed the reader. I never did much consumer. Thanks for the tip bit.

That is in the service manual for every CD player. New optical pickups come with the pads shorted to protect the pickup in transit, and then they also come in a static free clam shell, inside a static free bag. The laser diode is extremely sensitive to ESD. More than just about anything I have seen
Great vid! I have just bought a replacement laser unit and it also has that solder on the orange ribbon. What is that for and do I have to remove it? The issue I am still having is that it won't play CD's and just reads NOT PLAYABLE after displaying READING DISC. The CD mechanism seems to work fine as it takes and ejects CD's and even spins so I'm at a loss of what it could be. I'd be grateful for any advice, thank you in advance :)
That solder on the ribbon keeps the laser diode shorted to protect it. It needs to be removed after the ribbon is connected to the circuit if you don't remove it the laser won't get power and nothing will play and you could damage the drive circuit that drives the laser as it will be operating into a short circuit.
I have a Bose Sound Wave with. jammed disc. I should say 'had' .. I've resolved the problem after following all the advice on the Bose web site, turn it off and back on again to reset it, turn it upside down ( not sure if this is really a joke or not )...none of this worked after several tries. There was a CD inside for sure, but the system was flashing "NO DISC" .. Finally I just tried to insert another CD which un-wedged the stuck CD and all is well.
I got a used Wave Acoustic CD-3000. The radio works great. The CD player spins the CD and the display shows it started but does not begin to play. There is a soft clicking sound and will not play. I have tried different discs. What is the likely cause? If it is not an easy fix, I wiill be selling it on eBay for parts within the next week but I would rather fix it!
I have a Bose Wave radio I need help with it plays some CDs some it will not! It makes clicking noise sometimes when trying to read the disc but does not read 95% of the time could you please help
The shorting pad ensures that the diode is safe before unplugging it and putting a clip on the end of the cable. New replacements came in a static free package, with a clip over the end of the cable and the shorting pads jumpered. Some brands like Rotel had a switch that you could flip to short the LD.
I have one of these where it seems the cd player doesn't always read and play correctly. If you turn the wave radio on its side it reads and plays perferct. But when it is right side up it has trouble reading disks and keeps skipping. Any ideas?

I have a different problem with mine. I have to a CD for about an hour before it will work ! To start with all I get is click, click,clickety,click, click click. The clicking is coming from the laser area I think. Can this be fixed ? Hope you can help as it's a lovely unit and does all I need.
Mine was doing the same thing. It was ‘dried up’ or dusty silicone grease on the screw drive that moves the laser back/forth - added some fresh silicone grease to the screw, loaded a disc and moved from first track to last about 5-6 times, now it’s like new!
I treasure my CD and I get upset when I see my disc getting scratches. Frankly when they introduced this swallow type disc player, it really upset me as every time the disc is roll inside the player, God knows how much dust and sand being scratched over the surface. I still prefer the good old tray method or the flip type cover like the first version Bose CD Player. It is easier to clean the lens compare to my existing Bose Wave Music 3 that cannot read the CD due to dust stuck to the laser lens. It is troublesome to open so many things to access the lens and I let it be for many years now. I just listen to FM nowadys.
thankfully, the laser can see through most dust that would get on the disc from this player. Typically, it’s not dust on the laser, but dust on the screw that moves the laser back and forth, just need to add some silicone grease to that screw (don’t even need to remove it like here, just raise the deck a little from the bottom once you’ve removed the top case cover.)
The kicker is Bose won't service these old units now. They will sell them a new model. After the warranty expires they just want to sell new products like everyone else. Last one I had the owner had broken the little wire than goes to the optional 3 disk changer, and that part was not available, but a new charger was. So I just made up my own patch cord and put a plug on the end.
12voltvids even worse is the musician amp they make. $2500 and they won’t fix the the older models, won’t provide a referral to a repair shop, and won’t provide even a schematic. Really bad for customers.
All Bose would do is full board swaps for any repairs. They don’t do component level repairs. So when they run out of boards, it “screw you, customer!”.

I have the same problem Second disc went in easy I thought I had ejected everything! I have no one to fix mine Bose not in the repair business! Mine is in the cd disk changer that I only used about 12 times at most
Smashing job, a full metal deck is a a nice supprise, i did expect plastic. I know nothing about the company, but it can't be bad if it uses a metal deck :-D. If you want to work on real crap, find items that were made by Amstrad, they were real crap!!.
Regarding static discharge, this should be an item that is second nature to people working on high impedance devices or those susceptible to static discharge. Earth yourself and the machine and the general area - and that is usually enough. Brush your hand to ground and ensure the machine is at ground potential and you don't usually need to worry. Never blown a device in 30 years is proof you don't need to worry too much if you are careful - i.e. don't run back and forth over a nylon carpet then zap/poke the diode...without earthing yourself first.
Martin D A For most devices this is enough but the laser diode is more easily damaged and that is why every optical pickup has a short pad specifically for this purpose. Even taking normal esd precautions laser pickups have been damaged. The flex lead will pick up discharges in the air without you having to touch it. Want to test this out. Take out a pickup and don't short the protection pads. Set it on your bench. Go draw an arc from say a crt somewhere else in the vicinity say 5 to 10 feet away. Go back and install the pickup and see if it works. Just the induced voltage in the open lead can damage it. That's why the protection pads are there and why companies like sony put the pickup in a static free clamshell box, then wrapped that up in a static free bag and put that in a cardboard box in addition to shorting the protection lands.
Guess I've been lucky...so far...I will certainly keep in mind your advice. I think laser diodes fall into the same category of sensitivity as standard FETs and can be damaged with less than 300V. The most susceptible are magnetoresistive heads and RF FETs which can be punctured with less than 100V. Almost every device can be damaged by static - if the charge is large enough. Testing uses a Human Body Model or HBM which is just a 100pf cap and a 1500ohm resistor charged - up to 25KV, to simulate the worst case. Almost nothing will survive 25KV! Yet modern VLSI and CMOS do very well as most have internal protection and can survive over 5KV. Keeping everything at the same potential is the key, conductive foam can't hold a pair of pins at earth potential but do keep them both at the same potential minimising any chance of damage. Voltages induced in cables and traces connected to the high impedance though are something I never considered. Yes, I guess a few hundred volts are possible there under the right circumstance...Very interesting, thanks for the heads up.
Yes, this is understood. We are discussing the merits - or not - of managing local potentials. The laser diode can be killed with 100-300V static, which as you know can be built up on a worm wiggling through wet grass. 12Voltvids was telling us the bare connector could induce enough voltage from a nearby event to destroy the laser, which was interesting to me.
That CD mech looks suspiciously like a standard Matsushita in-car unit. Not bad, but unremarkable. Which isn't surprising as the in-car Bose stuff is made by Clarion, a Hitachi subsidiary which has used Panasonic mechs for a long time now.
Yes they could have used an off the shelf CD mechanism. The boards are definitely their own though. They all say BOSE and made in usa is etched into the copper.
What's interesting is that I cannot find anything on-line to suggest the part number or x-ref to any Japanese (presumably) part number for the CD mechanism. It's obviously no bad thing being off the shelf as it means parts are more readily available. I am now tempted to buy one of the broken ones off eBay to do a bit of digging around, as it's always the CD unit that fails from what I can see (the rest of it seems to be reliable -- but then the electronics are pretty low-stress in devices like this so they really shouldn't be failing anyway). If I could find a cheap source of mechanisms or even just laser assemblies, repairing these things could be quite lucrative. Knowing my luck I'll just get one that isn't broken as usual!
Don't get me wrong your right but on many things to sell anything to make money is to keep going so the economy stay healthy.but tell me that a good company can make something perfect and last a long long time.I'm seeing the video two disc won't do it.I have a tascam recorder and if you push the disc in to hard it could jam or damage the system push it untill it takes it for you in.but slowly, you do a very good job on anything, that's a good thing,I do watch the videos at times.yes your right plastic does break Bose does make great stereo systems but to high for me.but very good systems.do all kinds of electronics, I do like to build and fix things to.but your a pro at this.keep it up.thanks.let me know.we need to make things again.the USA.
Right on. Yes we do need to make things back home again, good quality products, however these will be expensive, and that is the problem. The consumer has become so use to paying the very least they can that they won't buy the expensive one. Even if the expensive model was designed to last 20 years, but it cost 5X the price of the cheapest model that will be broken in 2 years the average person will buy the cheap one, and buy another in 2 years. That is just the way it works. The way technology changes now, everyone wants to stay current, and replaces their electronics after a year or 2 even if it isn't broken. I have some old radios that are 80+ years old and still work. These are expensive radios, and I remember when they came out I thought people were crazy for paying what they did, but now I have worked on a few, and every one of them has been repairable, I understand why they were priced as they were. The only bose system I have is the factory system in my car, but it sounds so good I would never consider changing it out.
There is top end audio out there but it dont come from no bose, sony or samsung, companies like cambridge audio make good stuff but it aint on the shelves at the local currys.
hey let me tell you, it's probably a kid who did it. I did that to my moms when i was much younger and played it innocent, kids get bored and like to try things
Yes so does mine. My little transmitter goes to 87.5 and I use that as it is a clear Channel. All the others have a real station on them starting at 88.1 but that spills over onto 87.9 which makes it unusable for my test transmitter which only puts out about 10 mW. I have one that puts out 100 mW but it has too much range and I don't need the radio inspectors paying me a visit. There has been a few pirates on the air that have been shut down. The one I have goes about a block when connected to a proper antenna which is about the limit of what I would dare.
I know we bought the lesser ones but some of us like me don't have that much money to buy the more expensive stuff so I go cheap if the us goes for price cheaper it will benefit others.the way I see it even when it snows some don't clean up I still think the us is getting lazy and want more for the little they do.but don't get me wrong I do want the factories to make again but they complain about everything even a pipeline to Alaska so we need to do better now to keep the economy in shape.stop the trade agreements.and do more work in the us.

Bose definitely serves a purpose. My parents swear by them. I just repaired a power supply problem on their 1st generation Wave radio.

ESD can also risk damage to other components in the pickup, especially the photosensor array.
My auntie has that and I like the sound quality. The only thing I don't like with that model is all functions are on the remote control. There is not a single button on the unit that if you lose the remote you're in trouble. Although you can still eject the disc by disconnecting it from the power outlet then plug it back.
Yes the entire unit is remote controlled, but fortunately pretty much every universal remote out there will work it.

It's kind of sticky as the disc goes, and often comes up with read error. I haven't opened it up - it could just be dirty I don't know. I would really appreciate your thoughts before I do. If it’s slot load, I would watch the LCD to see if it goes off when the loading stops. It’s capacitors that need replacing on the PCB that is located under the CD drive under the shield.

Excellent video. Im having cd jamming issues on my seldom used Bose Wave unit. Its elegant cd loading system is complex, & prone to having problems. Hey if you're still checking these older videos, im running into an issue with the same model making that clicking sound as it tries to read the disc. The part you mentioned looks bent is the same on mine, so I think thats just how it's made 🤷♂️
I try to avoid these changers.
Often, the silicon lubricant on the screw that moves the laser back and forth seems to collect enough dust to keep it from bein as lubricated as it should - just add a little silicon grease with a long cotton swab (don’t need to remove anything, you can see the screw at about 5:03 if you freeze frame - it’s a screw on the bottom of the silver drive unit, at about a 45 degreen angle to the front.
Could you do a follow up on that solder bridge you placed on the CD ribbon cable? Almost seemed like just a random drop placed willy nilly. Though I'm sure there's more to it than that.
I put the solder bridge on the cable right where it was supposed. to go. That was an exposed tinned copper pad just for that purpose. Every optical block has the exact same thing on it, or it has a shorting switch. I can do another video and show where the shorting pads on on various optical pickups.

Great information! I have a question you might be able to help me with. My Bose Radio CD keeps saying all of my disks are unreadable. We tried cleaning it with a CD cleaner disk and also with canned air. Everything I'm reading online says the laser lens probably needs to be cleaned. This video was helpful in figuring out how to take the unit apart but I still can't figure out where the actual laser lens is that needs to be cleaned. Do you have any info on where it's found on the unit? Thanks!!!

I own the same model radio AWRCC1. My cd player is not working. When I push the CD button on the remote, the display does not show "CD". If I mechanically insert a cd into the player part way, the cd does not eject or insert via the load motor(the belt is ok). Both ribbon cables are ok. Thinking that it is an IC. Any ideas please? I am a tech, just have not worked on any Bose radios. Thanks
Mine does that too, I have to have another CD that I use to guide the CD all the way in, I suspect there is some dried out rubber piece that is supposed to be pulling the CD in. It probably needs a wipe with some isopropyl alcohol and some rubber sealant treatment (like used on RV seals). 😊
The little levers you mention at 9:00 are stuck in the wrong position and are blocking me from inserting a disc, even though I’m sure there is none in there. Maybe I’ll need to replace the spring. Thanks for the video!
I mostly fixed jukeboxes, they all used philps players. I did see those pads. Some had an adjustment pot on the ribbon. These were from the industrial division. All on metal chassis. You could take your fist and pound the chassis and no skip after you installed the reader. I never did much consumer. Thanks for the tip bit.
Yes some had laser power adjustment on the ribbon, others had it on the optical block itself.
They glued that down, no way to turn. They never needed adjustment. That was a good mystery reveled. Thanks.

That is in the service manual for every CD player. New optical pickups come with the pads shorted to protect the pickup in transit, and then they also come in a static free clam shell, inside a static free bag. The laser diode is extremely sensitive to ESD. More than just about anything I have seen

Great vid! I have just bought a replacement laser unit and it also has that solder on the orange ribbon. What is that for and do I have to remove it? The issue I am still having is that it won't play CD's and just reads NOT PLAYABLE after displaying READING DISC. The CD mechanism seems to work fine as it takes and ejects CD's and even spins so I'm at a loss of what it could be. I'd be grateful for any advice, thank you in advance :)
That solder on the ribbon keeps the laser diode shorted to protect it. It needs to be removed after the ribbon is connected to the circuit if you don't remove it the laser won't get power and nothing will play and you could damage the drive circuit that drives the laser as it will be operating into a short circuit.

I have a Bose Sound Wave with. jammed disc. I should say 'had' .. I've resolved the problem after following all the advice on the Bose web site, turn it off and back on again to reset it, turn it upside down ( not sure if this is really a joke or not )...none of this worked after several tries.
There was a CD inside for sure, but the system was flashing "NO DISC" ..
Finally I just tried to insert another CD which un-wedged the stuck CD and all is well.
I got a used Wave Acoustic CD-3000. The radio works great. The CD player spins the CD and the display shows it started but does not begin to play. There is a soft clicking sound and will not play. I have tried different discs. What is the likely cause? If it is not an easy fix, I wiill be selling it on eBay for parts within the next week but I would rather fix it!

Philips used to sell a clone of this until about 2010 sounded pretty nice.

Nothing really to see. It is 2 little tinned pads on the flex cable. A solder jumper between the lands to shot it, and remove them after.
We called that operator error. No a very nice unit. I did not know about the shorting pad. We used a paper clip and slid it across the ribbon.
The shorting pad ensures that the diode is safe before unplugging it and putting a clip on the end of the cable. New replacements came in a static free package, with a clip over the end of the cable and the shorting pads jumpered. Some brands like Rotel had a switch that you could flip to short the LD.
I have one of these where it seems the cd player doesn't always read and play correctly. If you turn the wave radio on its side it reads and plays perferct. But when it is right side up it has trouble reading disks and keeps skipping. Any ideas?
It's the spindle motor. Bearing is worn out. When you put it on its side it fixes it. When upright the shaft is wobbling

I have a different problem with mine. I have to a CD for about an hour before it will work ! To start with all I get is click, click,clickety,click, click click. The clicking is coming from the laser area I think. Can this be fixed ? Hope you can help as it's a lovely unit and does all I need.
Mine was doing the same thing. It was ‘dried up’ or dusty silicone grease on the screw drive that moves the laser back/forth - added some fresh silicone grease to the screw, loaded a disc and moved from first track to last about 5-6 times, now it’s like new!

I treasure my CD and I get upset when I see my disc getting scratches. Frankly when they introduced this swallow type disc player, it really upset me as every time the disc is roll inside the player, God knows how much dust and sand being scratched over the surface. I still prefer the good old tray method or the flip type cover like the first version Bose CD Player. It is easier to clean the lens compare to my existing
Bose Wave Music 3 that cannot read the CD due to dust stuck to the laser lens. It is troublesome to open so many things to access the lens and I let it be for many years now. I just listen to FM nowadys.
thankfully, the laser can see through most dust that would get on the disc from this player. Typically, it’s not dust on the laser, but dust on the screw that moves the laser back and forth, just need to add some silicone grease to that screw (don’t even need to remove it like here, just raise the deck a little from the bottom once you’ve removed the top case cover.)

The kicker is Bose won't service these old units now. They will sell them a new model. After the warranty expires they just want to sell new products like everyone else. Last one I had the owner had broken the little wire than goes to the optional 3 disk changer, and that part was not available, but a new charger was. So I just made up my own patch cord and put a plug on the end.
12voltvids even worse is the musician amp they make. $2500 and they won’t fix the the older models, won’t provide a referral to a repair shop, and won’t provide even a schematic. Really bad for customers.
All Bose would do is full board swaps for any repairs. They don’t do component level repairs. So when they run out of boards, it “screw you, customer!”.
I did fix one once, small amps and so may screws. My eyes don't like these tiny parts. You can get the chips online.

Regarding static discharge, this should be an item that is second nature to people working on high impedance devices or those susceptible to static discharge. Earth yourself and the machine and the general area - and that is usually enough. Brush your hand to ground and ensure the machine is at ground potential and you don't usually need to worry. Never blown a device in 30 years is proof you don't need to worry too much if you are careful - i.e. don't run back and forth over a nylon carpet then zap/poke the diode...without earthing yourself first.

For most devices this is enough but the laser diode is more easily damaged and that is why every optical pickup has a short pad specifically for this purpose. Even taking normal esd precautions laser pickups have been damaged. The flex lead will pick up discharges in the air without you having to touch it. Want to test this out. Take out a pickup and don't short the protection pads. Set it on your bench. Go draw an arc from say a crt somewhere else in the vicinity say 5 to 10 feet away. Go back and install the pickup and see if it works. Just the induced voltage in the open lead can damage it. That's why the protection pads are there and why companies like sony put the pickup in a static free clamshell box, then wrapped that up in a static free bag and put that in a cardboard box in addition to shorting the protection lands.
Guess I've been lucky...so far...I will certainly keep in mind your advice. I think laser diodes fall into the same category of sensitivity as standard FETs and can be damaged with less than 300V. The most susceptible are magnetoresistive heads and RF FETs which can be punctured with less than 100V. Almost every device can be damaged by static - if the charge is large enough.
Testing uses a Human Body Model or HBM which is just a 100pf cap and a 1500ohm resistor charged - up to 25KV, to simulate the worst case. Almost nothing will survive 25KV! Yet modern VLSI and CMOS do very well as most have internal protection and can survive over 5KV.
Keeping everything at the same potential is the key, conductive foam can't hold a pair of pins at earth potential but do keep them both at the same potential minimising any chance of damage.
Voltages induced in cables and traces connected to the high impedance though are something I never considered. Yes, I guess a few hundred volts are possible there under the right circumstance...Very interesting, thanks for the heads up.
lasers are really VERY easily damaged, thats why they come with protection circuits.
Yes, this is understood. We are discussing the merits - or not - of managing local potentials. The laser diode can be killed with 100-300V static, which as you know can be built up on a worm wiggling through wet grass. 12Voltvids was telling us the bare connector could induce enough voltage from a nearby event to destroy the laser, which was interesting to me.
That CD mech looks suspiciously like a standard Matsushita in-car unit. Not bad, but unremarkable.
Which isn't surprising as the in-car Bose stuff is made by Clarion, a Hitachi subsidiary which has used Panasonic mechs for a long time now.
Yes they could have used an off the shelf CD mechanism. The boards are definitely their own though. They all say BOSE and made in usa is etched into the copper.
What's interesting is that I cannot find anything on-line to suggest the part number or x-ref to any Japanese (presumably) part number for the CD mechanism. It's obviously no bad thing being off the shelf as it means parts are more readily available.
I am now tempted to buy one of the broken ones off eBay to do a bit of digging around, as it's always the CD unit that fails from what I can see (the rest of it seems to be reliable -- but then the electronics are pretty low-stress in devices like this so they really shouldn't be failing anyway). If I could find a cheap source of mechanisms or even just laser assemblies, repairing these things could be quite lucrative. Knowing my luck I'll just get one that isn't broken as usual!

Right on. Yes we do need to make things back home again, good quality products, however these will be expensive, and that is the problem. The consumer has become so use to paying the very least they can that they won't buy the expensive one. Even if the expensive model was designed to last 20 years, but it cost 5X the price of the cheapest model that will be broken in 2 years the average person will buy the cheap one, and buy another in 2 years. That is just the way it works. The way technology changes now, everyone wants to stay current, and replaces their electronics after a year or 2 even if it isn't broken. I have some old radios that are 80+ years old and still work. These are expensive radios, and I remember when they came out I thought people were crazy for paying what they did, but now I have worked on a few, and every one of them has been repairable, I understand why they were priced as they were. The only bose system I have is the factory system in my car, but it sounds so good I would never consider changing it out.
There is top end audio out there but it dont come from no bose, sony or samsung, companies like cambridge audio make good stuff but it aint on the shelves at the local currys.

My car stereo starts on 87.9 FM.
Yes so does mine. My little transmitter goes to 87.5 and I use that as it is a clear Channel. All the others have a real station on them starting at 88.1 but that spills over onto 87.9 which makes it unusable for my test transmitter which only puts out about 10 mW. I have one that puts out 100 mW but it has too much range and I don't need the radio inspectors paying me a visit. There has been a few pirates on the air that have been shut down. The one I have goes about a block when connected to a proper antenna which is about the limit of what I would dare.
