    the reason why it says do not reuse is because the laser calibration is programmed on a OTP ROM

  • @hinny2005
    @hinny2005 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

    All this needed is the capacitors replacing under the “do not reuse” metal cover. The drive looked fine and I’m pretty sure you mangled the assembly trying to straighten something that didn’t need straightening as looked normal. I’ve done about 15 of these and any disc drive issues are 99% the capacitors under the drive itself, underneath that metal shielding with “do not reuse” on it.

      I have a Music System IV on my bench right now with the complaint of no audio. I found the radio would not tune any stations then lock up. My next step was to remove the "Do Not Reuse" cover to see what treasures lie beneath said cover, also I see a regulator IC next to the can that I will test for voltages. You have given hope for myself and my customer.

    • @paulcastillo30
      @paulcastillo30 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah, def bad caps on these radios. I had one that would only play if the ambient temp was above 80 F.
      You can test this by using a hair dryer over the boards for a minute or so. If the radio / cd works, you know it's bad caps. Apparently, the heat lowers the ESR temporarily.
      You also have to be careful with the housing on these. At this age, the plastic gets brittle and snaps easily.

    • @hinny2005
      @hinny2005 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@paulcastillo30good tip about the plastic being brittle. Very hard not to snap the posts when opening the screws. Avoid using any kind of electric screw driver is the only thing I can suggest.

    Couldn't agree more. It's that intersection between business people and tech. That's where the problems come from. Say no to the business people "we hate what you do" is a good antidote for this latest tech era. It's ok to say that.

    How many watts rms, does the speaker kick out ? The reason why I am asking this, is because the instructions for this unit are a bit vague. The only thing I see, is the power wattage at 60W.

      I bought two brand new Panasonic SC-UA3s, back in December 2021, which cost me in the region of $100 (ZAR2000-2200) a piece, here in South Africa. I find that it is always good to have a spare unit around, should one of them fail. This particular model has been taken off the market since January 2022, so I really bagged a bargain with both units. I have had no issues with any of the two and they work everyday, with an excellent output on sound quality. With a combined total of 300W RMS (150W per channel), I couldn't let this pass me by. 👍👌 It appears that the SC-UA3 is not so easy to work on, so I hope it will last. This would be due to the small thin screws, sitting very deep in the unit, initially.

    I remember when Bose shut down repairs on their overpriced, car stereo amplifier chip driven, underpowered, and over equalized junk. It hit me like a sucker punch to the gut. They, like almost all the consumer electronics manufacturers, had no loyalty to the thousands of repair shops that loyally serviced their junk for decades.

    You are correct I owned an acoustic wave way back in the beginning one of the first few to buy it. It was extremely expensive at the time and over the years. A CD player stopped working, etc. and the only thing they would do you could turn your old unit in and they give you 50% discount on the new one a refurbished one or a new one whatever originally I paid $1200 so they wanted like 500 in addition to my used unit for a refurbished or a new unit, $1200 back in I think it was 1991
