After reading David Culp's, The Layered Garden I became a little obsessed with Hellebores. Every year I find a place to tuck more into the garden. Had some beautiful blooms and buds yesterday, but now covered in 9 inches of snow, was waiting for this storm before cleaning up the old foliage. I know they will be fine when the snow melts. I also start with small plugs, even in the second year they perform quite well...but the third year, wow! (zone 6b/7a - NJ). Everyone should have this plant in their garden.

Holly didn't steal the show, it was already hers. 🤩 I'm adding more hellebores, mainly from seeds just this year. A slow but rewarding process.

Love my hellebores ... really brighten up the garden in winter, along with the edgeworthia and camellias. My favorites are the Wedding Series - beautiful, stunning color and flower variation !!!

Great content about hellebores, I definitely need more in my garden. But I missed a lot of it over by the fence because Holly was sooo sweet wandering around. 🥰 Sorry Jim! Could you repeat that?

I only recently discovered these while looking for deer resistant plants for my place. I'm in TX zone 8 and I bought 4 plants in early December that I planted in the ground immediately. The deer and our chickens have left them alone and they are just starting to bloom. They are doing well in an area on one side of my house shaded by 2 oak trees.

Every time I see hellebores at the garden centers, I am drawn to them! I’ve bought a number of them and they thrive in my SoCal, zone 10a garden. Mine have been blooming since January. I’ve moved them a number of times and they like the north side of my garage near my front door. They dry very well as long as you allow them to age a bit, such as when they start producing seed pods. Thanks for the information. I had never heard of the fetid hellebore!

I have a new rock wall and intend to plant Hellebores soon (soon as it quits snowing here in PA)....was interesting to see how that looked. I only cut leaves off my Hellebores if they are in really bad shape. I like the leaves.

Great video…..I grow several hellebores, esp Orientalis, whites, yellows, pinks, reds and black incl singles and doubles. Agree with Jim that they are so special during the usually dark winter time.

I chopped up those hellebore leaves and mulched the plants that the deer eat to deter them. It’s working! Less plants being eaten.

I was absolutely shocked to find some gorgeous hellebores today at a little mom and pop nursery that were only $10 for a gallon sized plant. They are full and a unique variety … I almost felt guilty not paying more! Just down the road at 2 more garden centers I found some for $25 for very scant plants. Anyway… thanks for all the info on this beautiful plant, Jim!

Hi Jim. I have several hellebores planted in my garden & thriving beautifully. I learned the hard way to not grow them in a container unless protected from snow or winter rain. They hate soggy feet & I killed one due to root rot. Price I learned very quickly since they are not cheap. 😅

Useful information especially regarding maintenance, timing to prune, fertilize. Deer resistant a plus too! I need to test my garden soil for acidity and break the clay down with soil conditioner products..I would like to find something to bloom under a great oak. These plants would be an investment for me but seem to be worth the effort and time.

I love hellebores and they are evergreen in my zone 6b/7a garden. Our driveway entrance slopes upward and I have some planted at the edge of the woods along the side of the driveway which provides a good view of the nodding flowers. Some of the clumps are pretty substantial so I may try dividing them.

My landscaper planted several hellebores on the shady side of the house. They are nice. The foliage is appreciated. But they do have downward facing blooms and seed like crazy. Constant cleanup with these things. I am thinking about switching to the Fire & Ice variety since they are sterile.....if I'm not misinformed.

You said dry soil is ok... I have an area below shady shrubs, a rhodo, boxwood, camellia, Forest Flame Pieris... it's right up against. the house so the area doesn't see a 'lot' of rain (even though I live in a rainforest area of PNW) at least in respect to the rest of the garden, but once established, would they likely be ok?
