When it was safe to return to Portugal, the Portuguese emperor told his son, the heir to the throne Pedro, that if Brazil was ever to become independent, he would want him to lead it. The emperor went back to Portugal but Pedro stayed in Brazil and eventually, Brazil became independent with Pedro as the emperor.

    My great great great grandfather, Andrew Zumwalt, fought in the battle of San Jacinto (the final ambush battle) at age 19. I have the prototype Colt revolver (circa 1835) he used in the battle, as well as his sword and a few cannonballs he retrieved from the battlefield after the battle was over. They're all in a safety deposit box in Houston. I'll give them all to my son one day, Lord willing. My other relative, Andrew Kent, died at the Alamo. Every freaking boy in our entire family is named Andrew because of these two. If you're ever at the San Jacinto monument, his name is super easy to find. Literally the last one.

    The Louisiana purchase was one of the cheapest real estate deals in history for about 15 million dollars. That same money can’t even get you 10 acres in Hong Kong. Each acre in the Louisiana purchase costed about 2 cents| edit: My information came from the American education system. (8th grade) I’m in 9th at the moment. For the Hong Kong comment each square foot of land there costs 20K US dollars. SQUARE FOOT. inflation I believe we learned ended up making the purchase 50 billion dollars in today’s money. So mega cheap. EDIT:#2: The Alaskan deal is more expensive. Due to the deals having somewhat similar prices. Louisiana is better because 1: more land for low price. 2: land is farmable, has a modern day huge population and caused other expansions. Alaska was more expensive if you take into account inflation. (Per acre)

    • @wordforger
      @wordforger 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @Sandman Huffmaster Well, they changed the six different flags to six American flags at Six Flags Over Texas after Charlottesville to avoid the controversy. As a Texan (and history student) I'm a little disappointed at that, just because it's showing the progression of Texas history, not glorifying the Confederacy or racism. It wasn't even the stars and bars but the ACTUAL Confederate flag that most people are less familiar with and that doesn't seem to have caught on with racists and historical revisionists quite like the stars and bars.

    • @robbanks1436

      Julian Birch I agree it is sad they remove all 6 flags. People would be more knowledgeable about history if they didn’t do things like this. The flag they had up before was actually the stars and bars (first confederate flag). It was not the battle (rebel) flag that is more widespread. This is basically what you were saying.

In the silence after the gunfire stops the man roars "THIS IS MINE NOW", and is answered by an angry bird who flies away from a hole in a tree missing a single wing feather. Then someone in full ice hockey gear riding a horse appears from the trees and says "Hey soory bro, it don't work like dat eh?" The Minnesotan looks at the strange sight, turns around and starts to walk back to Minnesota. The hockey stick wielding mountie says "Hey bro ain't you gunna say soory to the bird?". Defeated the Minnesotan continues walking while the Canadian takes the canteen from his belt and takes a sip of maple syrup. Had me laughing my stoned Wisconsinite ass off.

      @Scriptedviolince 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Not even Vladimir Putin. He's an authoritarian semi-dictator, but Putin could not possibly compare to exactly how much of a dick Santa Anna was. It's fine to listen to Mexicans talk about how vehemently hated the man was. It's fine for you to listen to historians try and fail constantly to keep up their professionalism while describing him. But it's really hard to understand and internalize exactly how much of a dick he was.
      At The Alamo, the Mexican force lost something around 400 dead. That sounds pretty good, yeah? Sounds like the Texans were great fighters, and they were but here's the thing. The Texans killed maybe 100 people, 200 max. Where did the rest of the dead come from? Santa Anna ordered that his own injured soldiers be given no food, water, medicine or medical treatment, instead simply stripping them down and leaving them in the desert. Those who were heavily wounded were stripped of all their possessions and left to die where they lay. The Mexicans weren't even allowed to put them out of their misery. Putin wouldn't do that. Stalin didn't do that. Hitler didn't do that, especially not to his own men.
      Santa Anna did.

    As a Texan, born and bred, I've been to the Alamo, I've been to Goliad (which is today a pretty small town with a museum commemorating the folks who were killed there), and just outside Houston I've been to the site of the Battle of San Jacinto several times, though not in years now. San Jacinto, where Texas won it's independence, was (last time I was there) kind of a non-descript very flat field. We were taught during 7th grade (mandatory Texas history year) that it was covered in reeds and tall grasses that allowed the Texas army to sneak up on the Mexican army in broad daylight, launching the ambush. And "annexation" as used in the video you watched would be better described as "granted statehood in the United States". Anyway, if you make it to Texas, all three sites can be reached with a two day trip, but I'd plan on a day at each site.

    The Siege of the Alamo was 13 days long and when it actually fell it was more like 3,000 men against 100 men. Because of Texan people dying of wounds and starvation inside the Alamo. And Because of the 13 days of siege. Santa Anna had time to call up more troops.

    • @mediterraneanworld

      The battle was on the last day - there were three charges by the Mexicans, the first 2 failed and the third they entered. The Mexicans had of course the disadvantage until they entered due to the high cost of breaching the walls. There were about 180-185 Alamo defenders. The Mexicans were also at a disadvantage as it was very difficult to supply such a large force in such a desolate place - which Texas was at that time.

      It is unfortunate that many of the stereotypes of Texas are quite troubling, in the sense that despite what the "politics" may appear it is a very diverse and inclusive place and that many of the state-wide issues are reflective of US issues (rural-urban division in economics and voting patterns and power). It's just like how people speak - I find many people affect an accent - George Bush was a great example as he had his normal speaking voice and then he had that Panhandle voice that he could turn on and off.

    The "Manifest' was based on the American Congress understanding that Europe was constantly at war because of too many neighbors sharing a space. So they understood that they were in a unique situation, being a New Country with only a few Neighbors, also new, and a lot of territory open to expansion. So it was basically a race to acquire as much land as possible, to limit future conflicts, by reducing the number of neighboring Foreign States. Considering the record of non aggression between the United States and other New World Countries, it worked.

    Around 19:25 the “you’re taking our jobs” comment, haha, as a Texas, realistically speaking, most Texans don’t think or act that way. Sure, we see color, everyone does and anyone who says they don’t is a liar. But as a “white” Texan, I speak Spanish, daily, and most of my friends are Hispanic, I’ve dated one white girl haha, I prefer Hispanic haha, but most actual Texans, aren’t worried too much about any of the shit you see or hear. Plenty of jobs and space. A lot of opportunity to grow, great food, kind people, and, an 8:1 ratio of guns per people. It should be understood, we didn’t get here acting like California, so any Californians reading this thinking you’ll join your neighbor here and, bring that “blue wave” you guys nut over. It won’t work. You aren’t welcome here. We don’t like you. Your failing system is clear to us. You can’t run a state. You can’t run schools. You can’t run a government. You can live here, but mind what you left. Mind what you DID pay, and mind what you do pay now, in Texas. No, guys like Beto don’t win. Guys like Bernie get laughed at. Women like Kamala get ignored and Hillary isn’t welcome. Not just for their ideas but who they are. They’re deplorable. So yes, move here. Enjoy our way. Enjoy our beauty. Enjoy the heat. But don’t fuck what we have. Remember, an 8:1 ratio of registered firearms. Texas doesn’t require firearms registration and as a gun salesman, I build and sell those suckers all the time, with nothing to trace but parts I’ve ordered, and I can easily take a boat ride and, accidentally lose all that. We don’t change. We’ll vote blue if it coincides with our way. And red if it gives us what we ask for. We’re a simple people, usually nice, and, sometimes very violent if you force it.

    • @krel7160

      In simpler terms, Texas is a state who's culture is built upon this idea of respecting your fellow man. It does not matter the color of your skin, it does not matter from where in the world you are. Every man bears some level of common decency towards his fellow man. And if this is achieved, everyone gets along fine. It's when you go out of your way, acting the fool and kicking up a ruckus that you start to annoy the Texan. We like the quiet, and the calm. And if you stir it up, and try to incite an outrage, you'll often find yourself on the receiving end of that outrage.
      Though on the note of "politics", I've noticed that at least in my neck of the woods, most people don't talk about it outright.. But if the topic DOES come up, it's not usually argumentative. It's more like a casual discussion of 'here's my views, oh those are your views, these are why', and a passing of time. Then again, most of these incidents arose out of small talk while waiting on appointments and loitering around until the line moves on, not going out of your way to cram it down someone's throat. Big difference between the two.

At one point she was working in HR at a job she finally loved, but suddenly a California company buys the hospital and screws EVERYTHING up, resulting in my mom losing her job and bankrupting the hospital finally. It was aggravating to see so yeah I don't want any Californian company taking base here in Texas (we live near the San Antonio) if they're going to do stuff like that.
      On another note, it's interesting I remember people saying, "Texas use to be blue" and they be right, we use to be blue, HOWEVER, we've always been conservative because the Democratic party use to be conservative, but I think that started changing in the 80s I believe (correct me if I am wrong) because my parents turned Republican during that time and were staunch Reagan Supporters, who was conservative.

    I enjoyed watching this video. As a Texan, it's interesting to see others react to our history. My ancestor, James C. Neill, is the one who actually fired the first shot of the Texas Revolution. He is also the one who yelled out "Come and take it!" in response to the Mexican army. After that battle, he was placed in charge of the Alamo, but had to leave shortly before the siege commenced. He left Travis and Bowie in charge in his absence. He also fought at the Battle of San Jacinto, the final battle of the revolution. He was in charge of the Twin Sister cannons, but was injured during that battle.

    6:26 You're absolutely right, actually. No offense taken! We literally committed genocide against Native Americans in our goal to "stretch from sea to shining sea." No country is fully innocent you know?
    But, I mean, how else were we gunna become a superpower without forcefully claiming that land? The natives were never going to just give it to us, no matter how many guns we threateningly pointed at them; we actually had to shoot our guns in order to get it...

    At the time there, that's only about a fourth the size of what Texas is now. By today's standard, Texas by itself takes up a good swathe of Europe. Also, we Texans are still very proudly defiant. Especially in the current political climate. With talks of taking away lawful gun ownership. we're very much on the "Come and take it" mentality still. The flag in the video is still our flag today as well. "The Lone Star State"
    Also, annex means to absorb, essentially. To just bring the entire territory fully in. Like Austria being annexed by Germany before the war. It becomes unified piece of a nation.

    Artur, as I relax with some tea in my Estonian TH-camr cup, let me fill some gaps in the video.
    Santa Ana was not only murderous, he was incompetent as a military commander. The Alamo was not a strategic target. Due to the low numbers of defenders, he could have split a small amount of soldiers to keep it contained and marched after Sam Houston, the real prize of the revolution. Defeating Houston's army would have ended the revolution. Instead, while Santa Ana wasted his time at the Alamo, Houston then had time to organize and recruit more men.
    As noted in the video, Santa Ana's execution of prisoners enraged the population and brought more people into Houston's army.
    The battle of San Jacinto was pretty much like the video describes. When Santa Ana was captured, he was supposedly dressed as a Private to avoid being identified, but when brought into camp, the other POW soldiers saluted him, giving away his identity. The other fun story about Santa Ana at San Jacinto was that as Sam Houston's army attacked in broad daylight, Santa Ana himself was enjoying, shall we say, the "attention" of a young lady in his tent. There is some question of whether this actually happened, but if you ever hear the song "The Yellow Rose of Texas", the "yellow rose" refers to her.

In Mexico they taught us that Texas was stolen in the most dishonest and disgraceful way, putting Santa Anna as a tragic hero, ignoring all signs of tyranny.
