My buddy’s grandfather was a udt and was here during this. His was on of the ships that were a part of the blockade. He said he had orders to wait if and if given the order to go his guys would have been the first troops landing on Cuba. They would have been mapping the path of the landing crafts and clearing the beaches of mines and stuff like that
My grandpas brother was in the 101st airborne during the Cuban missile crisis, he was ready and waiting for the call to drop over cuba...a whole company of airborne troops waited in planes with engines on in Florida, all waiting for the green light
In your puc.you do know that the American flag should be above the other flag. It 's a US flag rule. If not above others it shouldn't be displayed. Nuclear warheads are worryingly small for how deadly they are, and since these were only medium and intermediate range... they'd probably be shorter and thinner than the intercontinental boys. Also freighters can be pretty big.

Personal Experience during the Cuban Missle Chrisis: I was 19 years old, in college. My mother came home from her job as a nurse at a large hospital in Memphis, TN. She said, "Here's the plan." "If war breaks out, make your way ASAP to Holly Springs, MS (85 km)." "Walk, hitchhike, whatever you have to do." "Do not look for me; I will meet you there." Her hospital had a plan to move to Holly Springs to set up there. Memphis was a known target for nuclear weapons, Holly Springs had no strategic or tactical importance and would probably not be bombed.
"Duck and Cover" (1951) was the educational film all the American kids watched in school during the cold war. Pretty much, it's 'hide under a desk'... but there's a song and a cartoon mascot...
U can make a cup with ur armies skull and sell them to the army and yes this might be late/dumb but i dont usually comment, you'll also earn some money and support ur squad.
The actual name was the the "Strategic Defense Initiative" if memory serves. Soviets got pretty close to making working space weapons, and deploying them prior to an error that shot the satellite in the opposite direction it was supposed to go. Basically the launch was postponed, but the programming wasn't. Also they could only fit the satellite on the rocket upside down.
You have earned a subscription from me. It is so interesting to hear an Estonian point of view on the subject. You learn how to disassemble and reassemble an AK-47 starting in the first grade? Also your training facilities.... and here as an American I complain about the most trivial things.
When I was a kid in the US, in elementary school in the early 60s, they used to make us practice hiding under our desks, or go into the hallways and crouch against the walls, for nuclear war drills. We also sent our baby teeth to the government for radiation level testing, and told to not eat snow, because of all the nuclear tests going on.
Similar to you, my elementary school was actually a nuclear fallout shelter! It's been semi-abandoned after they centralized the elementary schools about eight years ago, but it was always a bit cool having a bunch of nuclear symbols on the stairs leading to the bathrooms. I had always thought stuff like that was normal until I was in highschool. It was also built on a site where the Underground Railroad once had an important stop. The joke that my parents grew up with around here, which we still had by my time in middle school, was that we didn't need to worry about nuclear war because we'd be in the first flash! We are so close to both one of the most important air bases and what was once a crucial production area that we were within the blast radius of several assumed high-priority nuclear strike locations. But we never cared or got scared of attack sirens. We welcomed them. Because that meant that they were just testing the tornado sirens.

My grandfather was a smallbore target shooter and spent some time in Moscow for a match in 1970, he told me that he saw preteenage children being taught how to throw grenades. I'm somewhat skeptical of that but it wouldn't be too horribly suprising.
during the cuban missile crisis here in the US My grandparents actually decided to buy bunkers. they are now sold but we live up north in the US far enough so that my family could get into the bunker with enough time.
Hiding under the table was the US strategy for civilians for a while too. Also other things that wouldn't mean much, especially as the yields peaked higher and the warheads multiplied.
I remember this event. Born and raised in Chicago. German by heritage and join the US Navy at 17, 7/71. 2 tours Vietnam, which we lost that war. 58,000 dead, hundreds of thousands wounded. War is not a joke and I’m glad the Cold War is over. My Country has been at War with someone my entire life time. My son was an Infantry Marine in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Russians are our neighbors on the Alaskan border. I would prefer a Military Alliance with them. Some say Mr. Putin is a criminal. So are most of our Politicians in Washington. It’s impossible to rule over the slaves if you destroy them all. America is no better then Russia. Best not to make War on each other.
My high school was built during the Cold War and there’s a bunch of signs around it with the nuclear symbol or that say fallout shelter because the basement was built to double as a fallout shelter
My Mom grew up during the Cold War. They used to have bomb drills at school, and all it entailed was the kids hiding under ther desks. Unless you was at the local High School which had an actual bomb shelter.

I was waiting for my ship (DLG-8) to come back from the Cuban blockade. My father was at the Jax Florida ARTCC and not allowed to come home, ARTCC was a bombing target for the Russians. They were moving marines and planes to the Florida coast for invading Cuba. We were all afraid this was war.
Star Wars came out years after the movie. It WASN'T a bluff, Reagan never claimed we had a working Strategic Defense Initiative, he just pushed to get the program started. Of course, the Soviets couldn't afford to let the US develop SDI without matching it --- but they couldn't afford to match it, either.
