We had an Estonian in our Basic Training over at Ft. Knox. Some kind of transfer program between the two countries. Really young guy. Anyway, this guy had a big accent and the Drill Seargents used to like messing with him in a friendly way. They would ask him in front of the formation what's he doing in America. He used to yell out loud "Drill Seargent, I'm in America because I want to see big American titties." That would have the Drill Seargents laughing and with a big smile. You can tell Drill Seargents really liked that guy.

Like any collection of mechanical systems, things break. There is a big difference between "existing" and "mission capable". At any given time there are ships in port for repairs, maintenance, upgrades, crew training, etc.

US military spending is roughly 3% of GDP, of which about half goes to the blue water navy. Considering that the US typically spent 6% to 8% (and at one point 12%) of its GDP on its military during the Cold War, the current 3% is small by comparison. At the Bretton-Woods conference following World War II, the USA advocated freedom of trade and freedom of the seas as a replacement for the old pre-WW2 colonial system. Dozens of nations have since signed on to this system. To this day, one of the major roles of the US Navy is to patrol the world's oceans in order to ensure freedom of the seas. Both of them are STOVL carriers with similar capability to Hornet class and America class respectively, which means carrying less than 30 planes in total. Edit: Italy still has one of the most advanced navy today (with the others being Japan, Britain, and France), with US ordering Italian frigates just this year when they realized they can't build proper frigates for ASW after the 2007 exercise when a Swedish submarine sank (not physically) USS Ronald Regan without being detected.
I was in the US Navy - When we went underway or (deployed) for the 9 months out to sea we only needed to be supplied once every 3 months the supply ship would go to shore and get supplies and then go back to sea and supply the carrier, the carrier never has to go to shore while deployed. As for how tough the carrier is it can take a direct hit to the hull of the ship and still float it has compartments within the ship that can close off to keep afloat.
That is part of the reason we cruise there. China is repeatedly trying to claim international waters as their sovereign territory. By cruising there, the U.S. shows that China is unable or unwilling to defend those waters, and therefore cannot claim ownership of them under international law. We are there specifically to prevent China from expanding.

During my active days in the marine corps I was able to spend time on multiple carriers. Including the USS America, Peleliu, greenbay. All of them were old and the peleliu was on its last deployment. The uss America was brand new and had a Starbucks on board.
Italy having 2 Aircraft Carriers is understandable: we are a country surrounded by water, with all the recent battles happening south/south-east of us just across the Mediterranean Sea.
It's reasonable to want a strong naval presence for sure. We're mostly just impressed that a small nation like Italy has invested enough to have that strong of a naval presence. I mean, not only are your carriers more modern, but you have as many as Russia and China combined. Seriously surprising.
@Hotel Yamato 110 Aircraft carriers in WW2? Only CV2 to CV33 could have served in that era. That's 32 fleet aircraft carriers at most. I think you counted escort carriers and light CVL carriers. Some of those were flat tops built on civilian vessels. I guess at half the length and 1/3 the tonnage it depends on how small you can go to still call it an aircraft carrier.
The disputed islands in the South China Sea did not belong to China. They were historically shared by fishermen from Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines. They were then taken by China...some at gunpoint. It's not that China should be angry...it should be the rest of the world that should be angry that China took them. And Obama let it happen. When building the US's newer aircraft carriers, the set designers for Star Trek the Next Generation were actually consulted, because the Navy recognized that the bridge design of the Enterprise from that show was laid out in a way that had a number of desirable features, some of which had never been integrated into real US ships.

I’m an American citizen and I’ll tell you this. The U.S spent about $60 billion to build one Gerald R Ford class super carriers and these are nuclear powered which means that they only need to be refueled once every 25 years.

Their first carrier is one they bought off the Ukrainians, which inherited it from the USSR when it broke up. Their future designs are based off that old relic. It's no threat to the US Navy, even if they build 20 of them. Their subs though....
Dont forget the 9 amphibious assault carriers America has (soon to be 10). 8 of these are old generation, with 1 new gen (with 10 more new gen scheduled to replace the older 8). These carriers can have the "hover" or v/stol aircraft or lots of attack helicopters or troop carrying helicopters. As mentioned above currently there are 11 commissioned Super Aircraft carriers with a 12 that is built but undergoing sea triales. The 12 is scheduled to replace the Nimitz, but the Ford Class still has some kinks so I expect that the Nimitz wont go away for years. Plus there is debate about going back to 12 carriers in service instead of the current 11, this way it's easier to do schedule and unscheduled maintenance without taking too many carriers offline. Technically America also has 5 aircraft carriers that are museums, and 2 more that are preserved that could become museums. So if things get real bad these could be brought back... though its unlikely as they're older and not as capable. And no, a single torpedoe couldn't destroy a modern Aircraft carrier. The US has purposefully tried to sink old carriers to test out their durability... it took countless hit and stayed afloat. They had to send a demolition team aboard to scuttle it. Yeah, a torpedoe would definitely incapacitate a carrier but they're designed to be quickly battle repaired then sail home to get fully fixed.
Actually, in a post apocalyptic situation and you had the means to do so... you could refit a CV to grow food onboard. Using limited power for other items you re distribute power into lighting for plants, dedicate several rooms for grow areas... and you now have a nuclear powered fortress that can grow it's own food and carry vast stores of water (which can be then supplemented and added too on board.) Pretty much the most amount of work you would need to do is obtain a large amount of good soil, and find hearty seeds.
We will have 12 carriers soon and that’s not counting the Marine’s escort carriers. As for the comment that a carrier would go down easy without the escort fleet, that’s not accurate the modern super carriers are extremely difficult to sink. It has defenses that are difficult to overcome. The reason we have 11 carriers is because one or more are being refurbished and upgraded and while the others are deployed also we have a rule that we must be able to fight on two fronts and win this goes back to ww2 when we were fighting in Europe and the pacific. Neat tidbit for you the number you see on the ship like on the USS Gerold Ford ship number is CVN-78 that basically means we’ve built 78 carriers.

I had to search on what made America great as soon as I came to this country since they never taught it, just history and how to hate math. I had a nuclear science teacher who served on a nuclear submarine, and he participated in those war games. In one instance, his sub got so close to a career undetected, they wrote down the nametag of one of the carrier's deck crewmembers and went away, again, undetected.
18:40 The top speed is actually classified. The nuclear reactors, can produce more than enough horsepower to go faster, but the power required to go faster could very well damage the ship. It is, however, unlikely the carrier couldn't go faster if it really wanted to- the only question is how much and how safely.

Yeah bud. Former US Navy submariner here. Nuclear Reactor Operator. I was attached to the Teddy Roosevelt battlegroup in 2001/2002 for our Med run. I never wanted to be on a carrier, too many people. Roughly 130 guys on a Fast attack sub. I knew my captain, and he knew me. Carriers are also bomb magnets. We played rabbit boat with our battle group all the time during exercises, and they never detected us unless we let them (switching pumps to fast speed and banging hull with wrenches). If we wanted to sink them, nothing was going to stop us. The surface guys called us "Bubbleheads," and we called them "Targets" or Skimmers. The carriers are still very cool. Each one is the 6th largest air force in the world, are the key to US force projection abroad, and are the basis of our superpower status. It's cool to see our NATO allies recognizing just how impressive our Navy is. That deterrent is absolutely crucial for global security. I'm glad we have this stuff, but also glad to have lots of good NATO allies. Awesome to have you on our side.

@@raytravis5 Dipping helos are probably the best chance you guys had of detecting us, but we'd just hang out under the thermocline layer. We knew the heads were actually the thing that could give us away the most, so we tied the toilet seats up (the piping is a direct sound short to the hull). I just remember the Sonar Tech from the Ramage telling me in La Madd about how his CO ripped his ass for not being able to detect us and then we "sunk" the TR. And then later to make it fair we were ordered to make sound transients so they could find us, so the ERLL watch was picking up and dropping a bilge access hatch over and over again and I was banging on the aft escape trunk with a wrench.

Three carriers were at the battle of Midway, the Yorktown was sunk but the Enterprise and Hornet made it back. The Enterprise was carrying all the aircraft because the hornet's flight deck was on fire, the surviving planes from the Yorktown and its own crew. So they're pretty tough even during the days of wooden flight decks and when the hangers were virtually nonexistent.
The Wasp Class and America Class can carry and launch F-35s if they want to. Their aircraft loadout depends on their mission, just like the bigger carriers who also have different aircraft loadouts.

To answer your question about our vertical take off aircraft. Most of our carriers carry f18s but the brand new and very expensive f35 is the VTOL aircraft. We don’t have them on every single one because they are very expensive and not all of our carriers are equipped for them

I've been on the USS John C. Stennis. It's pretty awesome and the sailors we met were so enthusiastic about the ship and their jobs, getting all misty-eyed talking about what its capabilities are. The ship is their first love.
The Harrier Jump Jet was actually developed by the Brits. It has "regular" engines, but they can be swiveled from horizontal to vertical. The landing is actually done by a "hook" on the undercarriage that needs to be dragged low enough to catch the arresting cables stretched across the runway. That does most of the slowing down in a very very short distance. It also means that a plane designed for a carrier needs to have a *much* stronger frame to take those accelerations for both take-offs and landings without tearing the bottom of the plane off.

Ford is nowhere near combat capable and the USS George Washington still has about a year left to go in her mid-life refueling and major overhaul. Once she's deployable, the Stennis will go into the yard for its mid-life refueling and complex overhaul and will not be available for over 4 years. The Ford debacle has really handicapped the navy, we should have 10 available for deployment with 1 in the yard at any given time. We are thus down a carrier battle group from what we should have available at all times.

In 2005 the U.S. did test on an older aircraft carrier (USS America) to see how much abuse they could take before sinking so they could use that information is designing future aircraft carriers. The ship withstood four weeks of constant attack and was still floating before they sent a demolition team in to finally sink it.
From a technical point of view, this is both correct and wrong. An aircraft carrier - like the America, in the example you cited - can take a TON of abuse and stay afloat. But being afloat doesn't mean much. A single torpedo could, in fact, take a carrier off the board if it damages the screws. If a carrier can't make enough speed, they can't launch aircraft. (You have to have air moving over the deck for lift on the wings, even with a catapult). Usually that means the carrier turns into the wind and brings speed up to around 30 knots to commence flight operations. If you damage to screws to the point where she can still move, but not fast enough to launch aircraft, then you have, in fact, "taken out" an aircraft carrier, even if she's still afloat.
Exactly! So many people think everything is like a video game. It took multiple torpedo's to sink the USS America which is smaller than a modern day carrier. Once a submarine fires a torpedo, it is likely that it's position will be compromised and thus attacked and sunk by a nearby US submarine or surface ship.
I think he might have missed the part right at the end about in addition to the 11 carriers the US recently completed the 1st of 10 of a new class that are on the way.

The USN had 12 carriers for a long time, but I think the current goal is 10. USS Gerald R. Ford is having major problems becoming battleworthy, which has prolonged the career of the oldest active carrier (Nimitz).
@@roberthudson1959 correct, there were many new innovative systems that were created for the Ford class, and it is taking much longer than expected to iron out the kinks, but they are also much more efficient overall with reduction in manpower by almost 1k compared with the Nimitz class while increasing their capabilities. The long development is also part of the reason why the US kept the Enterprise (CVN-65) running for so much longer than they had planned to. Also I would like to point out that the carriers dont have a top speed of 35 mph, they have an un-classified speed of 35+ mph, they can go much quicker, and the old Enterprise was the fastest ship on the planet.

A few years ago, we had an obsolete carrier that was being retired, so, as a test, we attempted to sink it by firing a bunch of missiles and artillery at it. The carrier, though, did not sink until a crew of engineers boarded it and detonated the bull with explosives. That carried was obsolete and not defending itself I wonder what it would take to sink a newer one...?
@@armadillotoe Unlikely. US put a WWII carrier near our Fusion bomb test and the carrier lost the top deck but was other wise unharmed. Keep in mind Fusion bombs are more powerful then Nukes. On the other hand the Carrier was not right at the bomb site.
I was in the United States Navy. I was stationed on the USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) aircraft carrier. I was part of Operation Enduring Freedom. We were the first ship to leave port after 9/11 happened. I will say that mostly aircraft do not come to port to replenish supplies. We do what is called a R.A.S. or replenishment at sea. A ship with supplies will come up next to us and we will transfer waste to them while they send us supplies in return. So as long as there is supply ships that can bring supplies to the aircraft carrier then technically an air craft carrier could stay at sea for the full 25 years.

You are actually correct with the assumption that the US has aircraft that can take off straight upwards: The system is called "VTOL" (Vertical Take-Off and Landing), and it actually makes the nozzles of the engines direct the exhaust flow straight downwards, or at the angles necessary to maintain the directional momentum needed for precision landing. The most common examples of this system is use is the F-35C Lightning II and the British-made Harrier, referred to as the Harrier Jump Jet. The primary use of the F-35C was actually for use with aircraft carriers, too!

We had an Estonian in our Basic Training over at Ft. Knox. Some kind of transfer program between the two countries. Really young guy. Anyway, this guy had a big accent and the Drill Seargents used to like messing with him in a friendly way. They would ask him in front of the formation what's he doing in America. He used to yell out loud "Drill Seargent, I'm in America because I want to see big American titties." That would have the Drill Seargents laughing and with a big smile. You can tell Drill Seargents really liked that guy.

Like any collection of mechanical systems, things break. There is a big difference between "existing" and "mission capable". At any given time there are ships in port for repairs, maintenance, upgrades, crew training, etc.

@@RoastLambShanks Not true. CV doesn't exist during WWI, not to mention that Italy never had CV prior to 2001. Both of them are STOVL carriers with similar capability to Hornet class and America class respectively, which means carrying less than 30 planes in total.
Edit: Italy still has one of the most advanced navy today (with the others being Japan, Britain, and France), with US ordering Italian frigates just this year when they realized they can't build proper frigates for ASW after the 2007 exercise when a Swedish submarine sank (not physically) USS Ronald Regan without being detected.

I was in the US Navy - When we went underway or (deployed) for the 9 months out to sea we only needed to be supplied once every 3 months the supply ship would go to shore and get supplies and then go back to sea and supply the carrier, the carrier never has to go to shore while deployed. As for how tough the carrier is it can take a direct hit to the hull of the ship and still float it has compartments within the ship that can close off to keep afloat.

During my active days in the marine corps I was able to spend time on multiple carriers. Including the USS America, Peleliu, greenbay. All of them were old and the peleliu was on its last deployment. The uss America was brand new and had a Starbucks on board.

When building the US's newer aircraft carriers, the set designers for Star Trek the Next Generation were actually consulted, because the Navy recognized that the bridge design of the Enterprise from that show was laid out in a way that had a number of desirable features, some of which had never been integrated into real US ships.

I’m an American citizen and I’ll tell you this. The U.S spent about $60 billion to build one Gerald R Ford class super carriers and these are nuclear powered which means that they only need to be refueled once every 25 years.

Dont forget the 9 amphibious assault carriers America has (soon to be 10). 8 of these are old generation, with 1 new gen (with 10 more new gen scheduled to replace the older 8). These carriers can have the "hover" or v/stol aircraft or lots of attack helicopters or troop carrying helicopters.
As mentioned above currently there are 11 commissioned Super Aircraft carriers with a 12 that is built but undergoing sea triales. The 12 is scheduled to replace the Nimitz, but the Ford Class still has some kinks so I expect that the Nimitz wont go away for years. Plus there is debate about going back to 12 carriers in service instead of the current 11, this way it's easier to do schedule and unscheduled maintenance without taking too many carriers offline.
Technically America also has 5 aircraft carriers that are museums, and 2 more that are preserved that could become museums. So if things get real bad these could be brought back... though its unlikely as they're older and not as capable.
And no, a single torpedoe couldn't destroy a modern Aircraft carrier. The US has purposefully tried to sink old carriers to test out their durability... it took countless hit and stayed afloat. They had to send a demolition team aboard to scuttle it. Yeah, a torpedoe would definitely incapacitate a carrier but they're designed to be quickly battle repaired then sail home to get fully fixed.

Actually, in a post apocalyptic situation and you had the means to do so... you could refit a CV to grow food onboard. Using limited power for other items you re distribute power into lighting for plants, dedicate several rooms for grow areas... and you now have a nuclear powered fortress that can grow it's own food and carry vast stores of water (which can be then supplemented and added too on board.) Pretty much the most amount of work you would need to do is obtain a large amount of good soil, and find hearty seeds.
We will have 12 carriers soon and that’s not counting the Marine’s escort carriers. As for the comment that a carrier would go down easy without the escort fleet, that’s not accurate the modern super carriers are extremely difficult to sink. It has defenses that are difficult to overcome. The reason we have 11 carriers is because one or more are being refurbished and upgraded and while the others are deployed also we have a rule that we must be able to fight on two fronts and win this goes back to ww2 when we were fighting in Europe and the pacific.
Neat tidbit for you the number you see on the ship like on the USS Gerold Ford ship number is CVN-78 that basically means we’ve built 78 carriers.

I had to search on what made America great as soon as I came to this country since they never taught it, just history and how to hate math. Half the time it wasn't anything patriotic, other than your feelings matter. Hit me like a brick when I realized what being an american meant at least for me. Freedom, Liberty, and the right to say how much you hate your country without being shot and that's about it. The fact you can do things and say things without limitation compared to other countries is astounding and I guess people just forgot it over the years and replaced it with an international oppressive police and burgers.
I had a nuclear science teacher who served on a nuclear submarine, and he participated in those war games. In one instance, his sub got so close to a career undetected, they wrote down the nametag of one of the carrier's deck crewmembers and went away, again, undetected.

Yeah bud. Former US Navy submariner here. Nuclear Reactor Operator. I was attached to the Teddy Roosevelt battlegroup in 2001/2002 for our Med run. I never wanted to be on a carrier, too many people. Roughly 130 guys on a Fast attack sub. I knew my captain, and he knew me. Carriers are also bomb magnets. We played rabbit boat with our battle group all the time during exercises, and they never detected us unless we let them (switching pumps to fast speed and banging hull with wrenches). If we wanted to sink them, nothing was going to stop us. The surface guys called us "Bubbleheads," and we called them "Targets" or Skimmers.
The carriers are still very cool. Each one is the 6th largest air force in the world, are the key to US force projection abroad, and are the basis of our superpower status. It's cool to see our NATO allies recognizing just how impressive our Navy is. That deterrent is absolutely crucial for global security. I'm glad we have this stuff, but also glad to have lots of good NATO allies. Awesome to have you on our side.

@@raytravis5 Dipping helos are probably the best chance you guys had of detecting us, but we'd just hang out under the thermocline layer. We knew the heads were actually the thing that could give us away the most, so we tied the toilet seats up (the piping is a direct sound short to the hull). I just remember the Sonar Tech from the Ramage telling me in La Madd about how his CO ripped his ass for not being able to detect us and then we "sunk" the TR. And then later to make it fair we were ordered to make sound transients so they could find us, so the ERLL watch was picking up and dropping a bilge access hatch over and over again and I was banging on the aft escape trunk with a wrench.

Three carriers were at the battle of Midway, the Yorktown was sunk but the Enterprise and Hornet made it back. The Enterprise was carrying all the aircraft because the hornet's flight deck was on fire, the surviving planes from the Yorktown and its own crew.
So they're pretty tough even during the days of wooden flight decks and when the hangers were virtually nonexistent.
Also, America has 9 more smaller carriers (that are bigger than some country’s biggest carriers) that can carry up to 30 F-35’s.
Well... 30 if they get rid of all the helicopters and landing craft and turn it into an all out STOVL carrier instead of an amphibious assault ship.

The Wasp Class and America Class can carry and launch F-35s if they want to. Their aircraft loadout depends on their mission, just like the bigger carriers who also have different aircraft loadouts.

To answer your question about our vertical take off aircraft. Most of our carriers carry f18s but the brand new and very expensive f35 is the VTOL aircraft. We don’t have them on every single one because they are very expensive and not all of our carriers are equipped for them

I've been on the USS John C. Stennis. It's pretty awesome and the sailors we met were so enthusiastic about the ship and their jobs, getting all misty-eyed talking about what its capabilities are. The ship is their first love.
The Harrier Jump Jet was actually developed by the Brits. It has "regular" engines, but they can be swiveled from horizontal to vertical.
The landing is actually done by a "hook" on the undercarriage that needs to be dragged low enough to catch the arresting cables stretched across the runway. That does most of the slowing down in a very very short distance. It also means that a plane designed for a carrier needs to have a *much* stronger frame to take those accelerations for both take-offs and landings without tearing the bottom of the plane off.

Ford is nowhere near combat capable and the USS George Washington still has about a year left to go in her mid-life refueling and major overhaul. Once she's deployable, the Stennis will go into the yard for its mid-life refueling and complex overhaul and will not be available for over 4 years. The Ford debacle has really handicapped the navy, we should have 10 available for deployment with 1 in the yard at any given time. We are thus down a carrier battle group from what we should have available at all times.

No it can't. In 2005 the U.S. did test on an older aircraft carrier (USS America) to see how much abuse they could take before sinking so they could use that information is designing future aircraft carriers. The ship withstood four weeks of constant attack and was still floating before they sent a demolition team in to finally sink it.
From a technical point of view, this is both correct and wrong. An aircraft carrier - like the America, in the example you cited - can take a TON of abuse and stay afloat. But being afloat doesn't mean much. A single torpedo could, in fact, take a carrier off the board if it damages the screws. If a carrier can't make enough speed, they can't launch aircraft. (You have to have air moving over the deck for lift on the wings, even with a catapult). Usually that means the carrier turns into the wind and brings speed up to around 30 knots to commence flight operations.
If you damage to screws to the point where she can still move, but not fast enough to launch aircraft, then you have, in fact, "taken out" an aircraft carrier, even if she's still afloat.

Exactly! So many people think everything is like a video game. It took multiple torpedo's to sink the USS America which is smaller than a modern day carrier. Once a submarine fires a torpedo, it is likely that it's position will be compromised and thus attacked and sunk by a nearby US submarine or surface ship.

The USN had 12 carriers for a long time, but I think the current goal is 10. USS Gerald R. Ford is having major problems becoming battleworthy, which has prolonged the career of the oldest active carrier (Nimitz).
@@roberthudson1959 correct, there were many new innovative systems that were created for the Ford class, and it is taking much longer than expected to iron out the kinks, but they are also much more efficient overall with reduction in manpower by almost 1k compared with the Nimitz class while increasing their capabilities. The long development is also part of the reason why the US kept the Enterprise (CVN-65) running for so much longer than they had planned to. Also I would like to point out that the carriers dont have a top speed of 35 mph, they have an un-classified speed of 35+ mph, they can go much quicker, and the old Enterprise was the fastest ship on the planet.

A few years ago, we had an obsolete carrier that was being retired, so, as a test, we attempted to sink it by firing a bunch of missiles and artillery at it. The carrier, though, did not sink until a crew of engineers boarded it and detonated the bull with explosives.
That carried was obsolete and not defending itself

@@armadillotoe Unlikely. US put a WWII carrier near our Fusion bomb test and the carrier lost the top deck but was other wise unharmed. Keep in mind Fusion bombs are more powerful then Nukes. On the other hand the Carrier was not right at the bomb site.

I was in the United States Navy. I was stationed on the USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) aircraft carrier. I was part of Operation Enduring Freedom. We were the first ship to leave port after 9/11 happened. I will say that mostly aircraft do not come to port to replenish supplies. We do what is called a R.A.S. or replenishment at sea. A ship with supplies will come up next to us and we will transfer waste to them while they send us supplies in return. So as long as there is supply ships that can bring supplies to the aircraft carrier then technically an air craft carrier could stay at sea for the full 25 years.

You are actually correct with the assumption that the US has aircraft that can take off straight upwards: The system is called "VTOL" (Vertical Take-Off and Landing), and it actually makes the nozzles of the engines direct the exhaust flow straight downwards, or at the angles necessary to maintain the directional momentum needed for precision landing. The most common examples of this system is use is the F-35C Lightning II and the British-made Harrier, referred to as the Harrier Jump Jet. The primary use of the F-35C was actually for use with aircraft carriers, too!
