Have We Won in Afghanistan? VICE Podcast 004

  • The VICE Podcast is a weekly unedited discussion which delves inside the minds of some of the most interesting, creative, and bizarre people we know within the VICE universe. This week we speak with author and filmmaker Ben Anderson, who has just returned from another trip to Helmand, Afghanistan's most violent province. With US forces withdrawing, most of the country is now under the control of the Afghan government and its security forces. This, it is officially claimed, is victory. Ben, and his disturbing new VICE film "This is what winning looks like" would suggest otherwise.

Looking at this video a decade later, it's obvious to see that the failures in Afghanistan were obvious even back then. Why we acted surprised at what happened when the US left, is beyond me.

I look forward to his documentary. I saw the 30 minute version, can't wait to see his Vice version.
This man is top class. Hopefully, he brings more great , in depth docs to Vice. I think everyone would love to see a Ben Anderson documentary series. We will all learn something from his work.

Just curious, but wouldn't it make more sense to do the podcast after the premier of the documentary? Unless you guys are releasing it tomorrow. He has all the info, I was in the Army in Iraq and had a lot of friends that went to Afghanistan. Sense it is a full movie I'm going to assume that this will have to be on the TH-cam channel as the Vice episodes are only 30 minutes long and have two stories in each one.

According to a family member of mine who served in Iraq, the US government pays terrorist. He said most towns have some terrorists group within them and the government pays them to not be violent for a little bit and keep the streets clean. He also told me that the government was giving money to a guy on the most wanted list in exchange for information, but with that money the guy was just buying more weapons etc for his group that he worked for.

This is a random point but I like Ben's voice cos it throws in some variety. A lot of Vice voices are the baritone 'listen to my growly relaxed voice' type, and his is more horse sounding. Random I know, but it just sounds a little less contrived than the other narrators.
