I still occasionally play The Specialists. It just plays so well and the maps are just amazing and a nice throwback to the pop culture of the early 2ks
The single player mods that you can still play are nice little time capsules. Custom assets like old PC monitors and magazines laying around from the time.
It was awesome. Back when I was like 15 in the mid 2000's my friends and I would always bring my PC over and play lan games with his brother at his place. It was an amazing time. There where a lot of options back in the day for playing games locally. Most multiplayer games released at the time came with the server software so you can host offline with friends. You lose a lot these days just playing online. Even having separate screens in the same small room is a very different vibe. We lost a lot with the decline of split screen and lan play. Those old games can be easily preserved in their original form. We have all the software to play HL games without Valve forever for example. This is not true with most popular multiplayer games today. Unlike us older folk most the games you all played as kids are probably not gonna be accessible to your children. Having the other half (the server software) is really important and we won't have that.
I'm surprised by the fact that the Ricochet and Deathmatch Cassic can even be considered dead games, when you have these mods, that are both unheard of, and, have zero chance of some random people playing it. Truly, the fossils of goldsrc.

I worked on that mod as a 3D artist and map designer for the 1.1 patch, which never saw the light of day. The project was too ambitious, if I recall correctly there were maybe 6-8 of us working on it, with a single programmer. In the end the project fizzled out, as we got busy with education or work. Regardless I had a lot of fun experiencing serious-ish game development for the first time with a great team and I have nothing but fond memories - sadly not the mod files, except for some graphics stuff. :)
Pirates, Vikings and Knights 2 was so good! I remember playing it constantly and getting actually pretty good at the pirate side. Blowing people up with the powder keg never got old.
There are so many good half life multiplayer mods back from 2010, my favorite one is the OG Zombie Panic and Brainbread, definitely worth checking out. PD: If you ever make a sequel of this video, please talk about Syndicate Black Ops, it's worth checking out.
Thank you! What a blast from the past. There are two more mods I think are worth mentioning. The Ship was an incredible game that also got a new and better version in Source. Battle Grounds died with GoldSrc, which is a shame. Set in the American revolution, the tension of the game is that everyone has one shot and hell of a reloading time. Do you take the shot before your enemy and expose yourself without ammo? If you did, do you reload, opening yourself to being stabbed by the enemy while reloading? It was an adrenaline game like no other, forcing you to constantly calculate risks and distances and exposure.

Oh vampire slayers. I didn't really play that mod too much but the developer r2 actually had made a football half-life mod international online soccer back then. I really enjoyed my time back then playing it.
Earth's special forces is a dbz mod and to my knowledge it had a lot of different further community made modifications. Mods for mods of mods of mods made by 30 different people. All adding OCs , super sayan forms , maps , whatever. Not much but hey its still being played if you can find a decently alive version and ive seen this one guy still make updates for his own version with full on cutscenes and stuff. I just thinks all these divergent addons and expansion mods for already popular multiplayer mods are neat. Its a history or shared family tree for mods loved by various communities all around the world and that is cool.
The only downside of NS was the learning curve and lack to support for new players because it was so easy to f**k a game with a single mistake. I remember having so many cool nights playing it during the mid 00s, such an amazing experience.
Half-Life Rally was super impressive for its time. The fact it used mouse to control the cars instead of keyboard meant you got really good analog style control over the cars. i cant think of many other racing games that did this on pc. its still fun to play with friends today

There's nothing like it and everytime both teams have good Commander it's like the most amazing gaming experience you have to live to tell. I could trade all the AAA titles in the recent years just for the community of that mod to come back and play. You phased through and immediately getting crunch left and right from a few Skulks that have discovered your team sneaky teleportation phase gate. Machine guns crackling filled the hallway, and you barely survived with 50 hp left on your heavy armored as the rest of your teammate phasing through taking care of the remaining skulks. Med packs dropped all over phase gate and the commander is screaming in your ears on the voice channel "RUSH IN!!! SHOOT THE HIVES!!! WTF YALL WAITING FOR!!!". Some of your teammates were already quick to the action and you can already hear HMG crackling in the distant hallway with the sound of the hive crying out in pain. Then suddenly, you get gore from behind, when you looked back it's a giant Onos then shortly after it swallowed you whole filling your screen with nothing but it's stomach lining. As for Vampire Slayer.. I remember most people and servers ran maps with sun in them. ( At first it was not but that was due to said maps not really existing yet. Same for Nina and the 3rd slayer that, I forget their name but was basically a knockoff version of Seth Gecko from the movie "From Dusk Till Dawn".. Though the game basically died after that. It was really hard to find anyone playing that game shortly after that version sadly. )
Don't put down Natural Selection 2's community; Though it's small, it's still actively played. I feel emphasizing that while the main popularity has waned, there's still a dedicated community, is the more responsible thing to do. Since a lot of people will hear what you said and assume no one is playing at all, like is truly the case for the first game. Be careful when calling a game dead - Small doesn't necessarily equal completely dead. Calling it dead will just ensure it can't grow.
I think there's a Vampire Slayer remake called Bloodbound on steam, haven't played it but I definitely remember having fun with the mod especially on goofy dirtbike maps.
My friends and I where big fans of any HL mod we could find but we especially liked The Specialists. I had a retail copy that I shared with friends so we could do lan games. We didn't understand why we had to wait for an update that took forever to play lol. We bought a WRT54G back in the day even though we didn't have broadband just so we could do lan games. If I knew more about networking at that age I would have just got an un-managed switch for a lot less xD. If you think your internet is sometimes slow imagine figuring out and using ICS on Windows XP to share a dial-up connection with three people on your lan. You don't know slow lol.

Ah yes I played some Science & Industry. Kind of a cross between Team Fortress and Natural Selection. So glad Buzzy Bots was mentioned. The animations were very good for a Goldsrc mod.
I played the living hell out of three of these. ( Natural Selection, PVK, and Vampire Hunter. I also helped make a lot of server side plugins for Natural Selection and also converted a bot program I was originally making for another Half-Life mod to work with Natural Selection. ) This makes me think of Action Half-Life and how much I loved that mod too.. Sadly it died out.. It kind of got a small revival on Half-Life 2 but it did not feel right when I tried it.. Not sure how long they worked on it after that tho. ( I mention it as its slightly obscure? Not as obscure as Scientist Hunt or Rocket-Crowbar but still. ) Really miss Action Half-Life and Old Natural Selection the most. ( Well old NS as in, before every server became a alien only bot fest. Oddly I did not contribute to it because my bot program was considered "overtooled" by a lot of server owners back then so my servers was the only one that would run it and I also would not have it active at all times. Just on specific days. I had a Combat mode, a MvM Combat mode, a Alien vs Alien combat mode, and standard mode servers back then. I only used the bot program on my least popular servers, that being the Alien vs Alien and Standard mode servers. ) I also had a server for "They Hunger" that had Co-Op before Sven Co-Op had a working version of their own.. But little people played the MP of that mod ( I mean it is normally a SP mod so its not a big shock ) but the few people who played it where regulars for a very long time.. Sadly a few people that where regulars passed away and it became just.. A bit upsetting not to see them anymore and the rest of them and I all decided to pack the server up back in 2018. ( Yes that server went on for a very long time. Longer than any server I had for any other Half-Life mod. Including Half-Life 2 mods. )
It isn't on GoldSrc but i love playing Empires Mod (it's on Steam). Have been doing that roughly for the past 6 years. It's active on the weekend, starting around 8-9PM CET, Otherwise during the weekday it's pretty much dead. I also record and upload my experience of it on my channel. This info is also for DeZolance if he does a follow-up video about Dead Source Games and wishes to cover this mod as well.
Have you ever heard "Morbid Inclination" ? Yes, it's completely dead and even seems like unfinished. But It's 4 team gameplay between Human, Monster, Alien, and Robot. And how about "Gunman Chronicles" ? It also has multiplayer mode. The number of weapon in this game are small, maybe only 7 if I remember correctly. But each weapon can be customized, and there are lot of different setting for every weapons. So it's more complex than you think.
I played Vampire Slayer back in the day when I was a kid looking for free mods to download lol. I don't remember too much about it other than I thought it was cool and I had fun.
Wasteland Half Life. It was basically a Fallout deathmatch fps with ahead of its time features like mixing duel-wielding guns and bleeding. The maps were gorgeous and so immersive. Such a shame what happened. A great theme wasted.
I was then thinking of Wasteland when I saw your comment. One of the only games/mods to feature a H&K G11, and which also tried to differentiate rates of fire between the different fire modes.

Another dead mod worth mentioning is The Trenches, a WW1 mod for GoldSrc.
i know firsthand that at least one of the pvk2 devs has not given up on the game
I remember a mod called Fire Arms which was basically battlefield
into GldSrc. Or at least it tried very hard to..
I played the living hell out of three of these. ( Natural Selection, PVK, and Vampire Hunter. I also helped make a lot of server side plugins for Natural Selection and also converted a bot program I was originally making for another Half-Life mod to work with Natural Selection. )
This makes me think of Action Half-Life and how much I loved that mod too.. I only used the bot program on my least popular servers, that being the Alien vs Alien and Standard mode servers. )
I also had a server for "They Hunger" that had Co-Op before Sven Co-Op had a working version of their own..
This info is also for DeZolance if he does a follow-up video about Dead Source Games and wishes to cover this mod as well.
that vampire game looks hella fun
wood love to play it in an event !
1:42 Dude, I remember playing superhero mod in CS 1.6 15 years ago and one of the classes had the same gun lol
Not sure what's the origin of that tho.
Whatever happened to "Quest HL", it was going to be an RPG on the engine...
I played a lot of HL Paintball, Action HL, and Firearms.
Im surprised nobody made a mario kart type of game with the engine
Earth special forces, the DragonBall mod was awesome
Ricochet is a simple game but playing it with friends is really fun
I played Vampire Slayer back in the day when I was a kid looking for free mods to download lol. I don't remember too much about it other than I thought it was cool and I had fun.
❤ vampire slayer on lan as a teenager
Tour of Duty was a Mod based on the Vietnam war that I was interested in but it crashed quite often...
vampire slayer and the specialist were so fucking funny to play LAN on the cibercafe
Forgot about Base Defense
Vampire slayer could be a full VTM game.
Natural Selection my beloved, I used to play it a lot with bots (RCBot)
Natural selection looks fun! How did I never hear about it?
Also, the batllebot game looks insane with the celshading shader! Especionally for Goldsrc
Natural Selection was awesome
this vid should get more likes and views tbh
Hostile Intent mentioned!!! Best tactical shooter on the HL engine!
crazy how these used to have so much players
This is the second time youtube has unsubscribed me from your channel.
I often play Vampire Slayer with bots, they're pretty good!
