For the last several years, whenever I travel by myself, I check my bag even if it's only a carry-on simply because it's easier on my back. Once I got past my pride, I've been totally okay with it!
Agreed! I used to be strictly carry on only but as I've gotten older, I check my bag and only take flight essentials on board. Still pack the same amount, but it's just easier for me now.

If you are headed to Kailua, Over Easy/Easy ‘Que/Bakeside is amazing and locally owned. 4. Kaka’ako neighborhood in Honolulu is so cool. The small plaza, SALT, has lots of locally owned retailers and restaurants and the buildings are covered in murals from local artists.

I’m a very active 77 year old. On my last trip abroad I took the smaller Away carry on. I could not lift it up into the overhead compartment without help. Our next trip is to Sicily. I am going to take my Travelpro under seater as a carry on plus a small light backpack as a personal item. Then I will check my bigger Away carry on. I think this will work better for me now.
Excited for you. I read the Guest List and it's great! Bring a back up book so you'll have something to read when you finish it. One tip that I do when I pack is to put a big bath towel on my bed and then put my suitcase on it. Bed stays totally clean. You didn't show us what you're taking in your personal bag. Have a great time. No problem for checking a bag--you said it was free anyway and a nonstop flight so why not.
We use those ziplock bags for dirty laundry every trip! The key is to load your clothes in as flat as possible. We gain a ton of space coming home, and no stinky laundry smells in our suitcases
Oh MY LORD! Not to be judgy… but overpack much? I’m headed to Kauai in a month & have everything for 3 weeks in a 36L backpack. Gracious - 2 hats, girl. half of everything!! ; )

Hi, I love your videos. I travel a lot on my own as well, I love it. Watching you pack for Hawaii, made envious. You pack a lot of dresses, I wondered if you had tried Rip Skirts, they are wonderful. The company was started by women in Hawaii for going for beach to cafes and bistros. I own several, they travel great. They are light weight, don’t wrinkle, come in four lengths.I have enough worn the long length to black tie events. The new ones have pockets which is great.

Also your merch waterbottle makes for a great waterbottle on the beach, just used it on my recent beach trip kept my ice frozen all day long. Amazing!
Although it’s the opposite side of the island, I really enjoy Kailua beach and every Sunday in town they have a farmers market of local vendors! And then a little bit north up the highway there’s a ton of food trucks with my favorite sugar cane juice place - Sugar Daddeh’s! We love to do a huge loop around the island and swing by any off road stands because you find the sweetest, most hospitable people

Upsizing your suitcase was a good idea. Every video is carry-on only which means pulling items out that you really want to take. I'm going to London for a week so there will be no beach time, but I wear only skirts & dresses so packing them will be a challenge. The one hotel I'll be staying at does have an ironing service which I may have to utilize. How "safe" is checking a suitcase on a flight with one layover? I don't want to lose my suitcase. That happened on a return flight from AK. Traveling solo (I'm a female in mid60s) so putting carry-on in overhead bin is a concern. Any advice would be welcome from a seasoned traveler.

Just returned from 2 weeks in Oahu, Maui & Kauai! Did it with a carry on & personal item but I still think I packed too much! On Oahu, check out Lanikai beach…it was our favorite!! Enjoy!!
@@Veronique28753 We weren’t on a cruise, just flew Hawaiian Air which is easy and not expensive for island hopping. We spent 3 nights in Oahu. Favorites were Pearl Harbor & hike to Diamond Head (both need advance tix). Then 5 nights in Maui. Favorites were Sunrise at Haleakala and Road to Hana (we took tour because road is very narrow & scary! Take Dramamine!) Then 6 nights in Kauai, which was our favorite. Did a helicopter tour of the island which was amazing. The trip exceeded our expectations!
That backpack looks really nice! Plus it makes me giggle to say dime bag 🤣 I like to pack my carry on the nest it into my checked bag for big trips. Then on the way home, I have tons of space if I need it for whatever I may purchase. I hope your trip is magical and I can't wait to see the vlogs from it!
I’m mentally packing for my trip to the U.S Virgin Islands next week. I am very, very casual with travel and I adore your videos. I am packing two caftans for my trip (yes, a moo moo😂). I do swim leggings as well as rashguards, I am taking two sets with two suits to go under. I am also super fair, and had to check the ingredients of my sunblock to see what was legal for the Islands. Yikes! Have a fabulous trip!

Hi Jen! I'm so excited for you. I'm sure you will have a fabulous time! We were in HI last year to visit family, and in our research we discovered that there are a lot of sunscreen brands that say they are "reef-safe", but that statement isn't actually regulated! There are some good websites that highlight brands that actually ARE safe for the reefs. Just thought I'd let you know because I had NO IDEA how bad the normal stuff is for our aquatic friends.
As I mentioned in the video we don’t wear sunscreen in the ocean. For this very reason! The sunscreen is for other activities around the island and when we are poolside only. That’s why I pack so many rash guards.

I got tired of putting on the sticky reef-safe stuff, so we wore rash guards and hats while we were swimming, too. Much MUCH easier. I came home without a tan, but who cares?
Our timeshare has a resort in Kauai. Hope to go there in 2024. We're going to Boyne Falls Michigan next year. I've never seen a Great Lake from the shore. I'm looking forward to that too.
As soon as we get home I wipe down the outside and the wheels with anti-bacterial wipes and let it dry before I open it. During pandemic I also used to spray the whole thing with Lysol but I don’t do that part anymore - I have hard sided luggage which obviously makes it easier.

I don't get the big deal with not wanting to check a bag, especially sense you will have help from your husband to handle the luggage. It's not a game or a battle to be won. You want to enjoy your vacation and you want to take the clothing and items that will help make your trip more pleasant. I beat myself up preparing for my trip to WDW last month trying to fit everything into a carry-on bag and ended up checking a bag, anyway. I mean I packed, unpacked, repacked and did it over and over and over. I couldn't do it. There were things I needed to take to make sure I was comfortable and able to enjoy my vacation. I'm not going to do that to myself anymore. If I need to check a bag, I'm going to check a bag. That doesn't make me a bad traveler. I've been traveling for over 40 years with more than 9 trips to Europe, a dozen cruises, and more than 40 trips to WDW under my belt. I know what I need to pack in order to be happy on vacation and I have decided to stop trying to keep up with people who say that carry-on only is the only way and the best way to travel. Maybe for some it is, but not for me. I understand that you don't want to be burdened with checking a bag when you travel solo, but this is the case this trip. Enjoy your vacation, Jen! I just got back from my first trip to Hawaii. I made some packing mistakes. Too much makeup and toiletries. I did pretty well with clothing but wish I had brought tennis shoes. Totally agree with swim shoes instead of Tevas. Can’t wait to go back!

Every time I get home whatever one I took gets a little bath including the wheels, handles, everything and then gets aired out for a few days. I’m kind of compulsive about it 🥸
We loved our time at Aulani! My youngest was married there in December. Quick family update. My daughter-in-law is a Cast Member at Disney World. My son recently started with Disney as a Monorail Pilot.

We are really trying Carrie! We can’t solve it but we can avoid being part of the problem.
Hope you enjoyed Koolina, we live 5min from there and I walk the lagoons most mornings. It’s gorgeous there.
We go to Costco and buy reef friendly sunscreen. There’s one near Aulani where we also get gas for the rental car.

Make sure your sunscreen is reef safe. Hawaii has some restrictions as to what kind of sunscreens you can use.

You can buy coral reef safe sunscreen! I scuba dive and you can buy it at a lot of places easily.

Yeah I wear zero makeup in Hawaii. Tinted sunscreen and a nude lipstick is it!

FYI Sunscreen must be mineral based no chemicals. it's the law in Hawaii.
