I feel the same way with bags that have a ton of zippered compartments. I forget where I put things. Then I panic and can’t find anything! Think that’s why the Away products work for me. Simple but effective.

I completely agree with your tip to plan, plan, plan WEEKS before your trip. I have the OneNote app on my phone and iPad and I use it to make packing lists for specific trips. I keep a Master list for beach trips, trips to see family(tend to visit during cold winter weather so I need to remember to take gloves, hats, scarves, etc), work trips (things to remember to bring when flying or driving). These lists have everything my husband and I could possibly need, plus tasks to do before the trip (get cash, stop the mail, take out trash, etc). If planning for a trip, I make a copy of the master list and customize for the trip. If I realize that I need to add something, I also add to the master. These lists have been a lifesaver. It’s also helpful to look through several weeks ahead of time and start picking up things I’m out of like contact solution or travel toothpaste, etc. If I’m not able to plan weeks in advance, at least I know I have a list so I don’t get in a rush and forget something because my list is tried and true. Great tips!

Jen, I have found out, like you, what works for me when travelling through trial and error. Hauling bags that are too heavy through the ariport, especially on carpeting, wore me out on my last vacation. But, I still have not been able to master the carry-on-only packing. I am usually gone for 8 or more nights on my trips, so I find that I just need more stuff than I can get into a carry-on bag and personal item. I did, however, just subscribe to Owner's Locker. After I watched your video about your experience with Owner's Locker, I decided to try it. I will let you know how It worked for me after my spring break vacay to WDW. Also, I also unpack when I am in a hotel or on a cruise ship because it makes me feel like I am home. I start packing for my vacation as soon as I decide to go. Sometimes I pack too soon, but then I have time to go back and remove items that I realize I can do without. I keep my toiletry bag ready to go. I always plan on wearing my clothing items more than once. I really enjoy watching your blogs. And I love your sense of humor. "This is My channel, so..."!

  • @mswhizz56

I can totally relate to your issue with the backpack with too many pockets. Unfortunately, I didn’t realize this was going to be a problem until I was already on my trip. After a couple of days of repeatedly opening practically every zipper, I sat down and made my self a list of what was where that I then kept in a small front pocket. Then I only had to remember where my list was and to put things back where they went. It worked like a charm! For future trips I will do this at home so that I can put it on an index card which will be more durable than a piece of paper.

All great tips! My latest challenge is my Disney shirt collection has grown substantially and I want to wear it all! Going in January means that I need to be prepared for a very wide range of weather. But still, my packing cubes help get it all into a carry on. I love that DVC villas allow me to do laundry pretty much every day so we really get away with packing less.

I travel with my mum and sisters quite a bit. I'm a light packer, usually carry-on only even with kids. My sisters will bring a full size checked bag for a weekend away. Its become a running joke in my family! But you've so clearly summarised why we are so different. I plan everything that goes into my luggage well in advance and they throw things in the night before. "A prescription for overpacking" I love it!

Great packing tips Jen!👍🏼 I have a packing list created years ago and have been using it for every trip no matter it's 2-nights or 14-nights! It works wonders and hardly ever forget a thing! I even divided them up into different sections/categories, and of course I have a Disney section! 😅
I have to applaud every single one of you who travel w/ carry-ons ONLY!! 👏🏼💯I think I can do carry-on if my trip is no longer than 4 nights and it's Summer time! I need options!!! I'm the opposite, where if I don't have options, it stresses me out! If I can't do laundry doing our stay, I will need to bring at least one outfit per day, and often times I will pack extra shirts in case they get dirty. One day, if I can travel w/ carry-on only, that would be a historic day for me! LOL!!!🤣😂

I travel very lightly. In fact, I weigh every piece of clothing, and if I have two things I might want to take, I take the one that is lightest in weight. I also tend to buy new things with travel and weight in mind. Fewer items at lighter weight makes travel so much more pleasant.

  • @donnabaardsen5372

Great tips, Jen. Yes, over the years I've learned to travel very light. Like you, not planning properly makes me anxious. By the way, a nurse once told me Hashimoto's also causes anxiety, an actual physical manifestation. This was good to know, because it explained a lot. Now I make sure to allow ample time for travel and other plans.

  • @dianeschenkelberg8270

Pre-Covid, when going on big trips for 2 or 3 weeks, I would put stuff I wanted to take on my dresser as I thought of them up to 2 weeks in advance. I also created lists. Basics would be clothing, electronics, and toiletries - then sub categories within. We often rented AirBnB, so my list would also include things like a knife sharpener and cutting mat (because why don't many properties have a cutting board!). A scarf can really dress up a regular "day" outfit. And you don't need that many shoes. Even if you only took the pair you wear on the airplane, make sure you can walk all day in them. I have mastered (maybe) how to only take the amount of facial products I'll actually use. Contact lense cases are totally waterproof, for fluids you only need a small amount of. Happy traveling everyone!

When I was young we would take big summer vacations for a few weeks. I would be fully packed well in advance. Rest of the family always waited until hours before the flight to get packed. I would just sit there watching them all be crazy. I never wanted to be like that. So I’m usually fully packed days in advance. Much easier

  • @pappyone6062

I don’t do carryon if my husband or older boys are not with me as I am quite petite and it’s really hard getting the suitcase into the overhead compartment if I’m going for more than a few days and the bag is a bit heavy. I am afraid I’ll topple backwards😂. I keep my toiletry bag always packed. I go a bit overboard with makeup choices but I carry that in my backpack so nothing will break. Won’t unpack my stuff in the hotel except for things I can hang. I dont like putting all my clothes in someone else’s drawers. I have all my clothes in packing cubes and organized. I do unpack my shoes though. All great tips. Will be going to Europe and need to make a capsule. Only a few shoes and 1-2 purses though.

I watched the video and am currently packing for a week in Mexico. I had to laugh because my reaction to this video comes from your other videos. Thinking “I love that FOR YOU.” While I pack 15 tops for 7 days. At first I had a little anxiety about that but then I knew you would laugh and tell me to do me. I DID start packing much sooner than usual and have to admit it was great to be packing and realize I still had time to make an Amazon order before we leave for the items I was missing.

I'm glad you know what works for you and I do hope you had a great time in Mexico!
For me, I learned the hard way during my first trips to both Mexico AND Italy that almost nothing I have or buy around where I live for "hot weather" will work out in Mexico or Italy. I had to buy clothes in both countries because I couldn't wear ANYTHING I brought 🤦‍♀️. Now when I go somewhere hotter than where I live, even Stateside, I pack even lighter and buy a few things in my destination because I just know I'll get desperate and want something else.

  • @clairec5290
    @clairec5290 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Great advice. I always think that I will be more relaxed if I am prepared for any emergency or change in plans (what if we decide to go somewhere nicer for dinner?). But you know what? In an "emergency" I can run to the store for cold medicine, and we NEVER decide to go somewhere nicer. I have been vacationing all wrong! The idea of a simplified, shorter pack list makes so much sense. Easier to pack. Easier to unload the car and store everything in the rental home or hotel. Easier to pack up at the end of vacation and easier re-entry when you return home. Thank you! Thank you!

Love your videos. I've never understood when people pack large suitcases since even though I've only traveled "carry-on only" a handful of times I have always packed that amount of stuff. Growing up my brother and I always shared a suitcase one size up from carry-on. It made sense when we were little but we never transitioned to carry-ons when we got older lol.
Even a 2mos study abroad trip I only took maybe 2 weeks worth of clothes since we could launder and I agree we really dont need as much stuff as some seem to think. Working on transitioning to shampoo bars partially for travel, I just cant with most hotel shampoos.

Great tips as usual 😊. My old JC Penney luggage needs to be retired. Away Travel looks great but am concerned about train travel and hard suitcases. Have to research.

We used to travel with carryon only but now that we're older (and shorter) we can't lift our bags to put in the overhead bin. Thanks for this video--good, sensible advice. A big advantage also is that your bag traveling with you won't be lost or miss a connecting flight. Are the flight attendants allowed to help lift bags? I thought they couldn't. Sometimes a tall man will help but they're not always in the area of the plane that we are. Any suggestions??

You bring up a really good point and it’s why my mom won’t do carry on unless she’s traveling with me! And I think you’re right they are not allowed to help with the bags because of risk of injury so in your case I may just check a bag but make sure I had enough room in the under the seat bag for all my essentials in case I got separated from my other luggage! Not idea especially in the new aircraft as I’m 5’6” and it’s even a struggle for me sometimes!

What about pickpockets with a backpack? I’ve heard that’s an issue in Europe?

I would love if you would work with a woman who is a size XL (14) putting together a capsule carryon wardrobe (winter and summer).

Hi Jen! I just discovered your channel! If it’s okay, I’d love some advice. I am currently training for my first RunDisney race in January (the half marathon). I have more so been training at the gym lately for the race, and I’ve only now been starting to run outside. I’ve decided to do the Galloway method (run 45 seconds/walk 30 seconds). I can carry a pace of 13:30 min/mile.
I registered for a finishing time of 3:16-3:30, so I’ll be in the last corral. I’m getting very anxious about the idea of getting swept. Any advice to ease my anxiety and still pull through and finish being in the last corral? Thank you so much!

Great tips Jen! I am a check a bag person. Mostly because I don't like to schlep a bag around. I have a zippered tote that I take on the plane that fits under the seat with my tablet and ear buds and the most valuable thing... SNACKS! Anywhooo, Something I do to stay organized is pack my outfits together for the day. That way if I have 4 days somewhere I put the days clothes together and when I get where I am going i unpack them and then set the next days clothes out the night before. I also take an extra shirt or pair of shorts or pants in case I spill something all over myself. I hate to admit it happens way more than it should.

Kasey I love this and also the packing outfits individually works great for multiple destinations. Great tips!

Amen on too many zippers and pockets on the bags! I'd like to please have back all of the time I've ever wasted searching for things, zipping and unzipping. I loved the cinematic setting you used for filming this (you've probably used on other past videos, but for some reason I noticed it today).

Thank you, Charlie! I've only used it one other time and I love it, too! And yeah, those bags looks great in videos. They don't "live" very well.

One time I took them all on my business trip to Atlanta. I was going to need to be there for a week but had a day off between events so I decided they all should go, especially bc I was still breastfeeding the youngest. We were on the road for like 4 hours into the 12 hour drive before he asked “Did *we* pack ____.” To which I flatly responded “we didn’t pack anything but, yes *I* packed it.” He had the nerve to say something about a Royal we. Um, no sweets, Royal *me*.”
