Finally someone who understands what driving a roadster is all about. Not all this rushing around and talking about what the differences are to the Boxster and real /M cars. I've covered many tens of thousands of kilometres in the Z3 on beautiful narrow country roads in Switzerland, Italy, Corsica etc. You don't need 300+ horsepower to do that, you just need a car that corners well and has good brakes. I'm looking forward to having the Z4 in the garage next month next to my i3s. And yes, it's also a lot of fun to drive. EVs can pull away damn well and annoy a lot of sporty looking cars that don't have the slightest chance of keeping up 😅
I have owned a Z4 E89 now for years, and decided I might buy this third gen as well. But to be honest, it is such a disappointment compared to the second gen. that is so much more sexy, elegant and much more exclusive. May because both the inside and outside was designed by two women, the car is a real little gem.
Nope. It's priced appropriately. Additionally, no expensive service cost will come out of your pocket because it's covered for the first four years. Lastly, a Miata is built like crap and doesn't even come close to offer the comfort, quality and driving experience like a Z4 does.
I'm actually shopping both right now. The Z4 30i @64k vs a used ~10-15k miles 2022 Miata RF and adding Xida coilovers, an AVO Turbo, wheels & tires, etc. That makes the Miata faster, imrproves it's already great handling, while reatining it's amazing light weight "tossability" --it's almost 800 lbs lighter! The Miata with goodies would be around $44k vs 64k, but Miata is noticably smaller and not nearly as luxurious as the Z4 30i. Tempted to get a new Boxster, but with PASM & PTV and little else for $80k, but it's not nearly as luxurious as the Z4 either and Porsche repair costs make the BMW blush!
Eh m240i is boring and awkward now. Youre young and you probably need the room for passengers and can't imagine spending near $80k which is basically M3 money on a 2 seat non M roadster but believe me I have. It's far far superior than my 2015 M235i I had and my 2019 m2 comp, in handling and looks which I get compliments daily. 2015 m235i was car and drivers number 1 car on their top 10 list for 3 years in a row. But the new m240i hasnt even hit car and drivers top 10 once. It's lost its appeal. The new 2 series lost the appeal of why the 2 series was special. The new z4 imo is a spiritual and superior successor to the 2. It's the best looking car in the lineup and handles so well. Car and driver got 3.5 seconds 0-60 and 12 sec quarter at 116mph. Skidpad numbers are really good too, and on track I have beat my M2 comp times and get better times than F80/82 cars and am very close to lap times of the new M4.
I had the privilege to drive all 3 generations of the Z4. I found the first generation E85 Z4 as the most pure, raw, low slung and sharpest of all 3 generations. And it was just a 2.5si non-M version. Not the fastest, but the E85 Z4's DNA is 100% roadster.
Had two Miatas...a '99 and an '08. Great fun but high revving and noisy with signifcant wind buffeting making longer tours uncomfortable. Anxious to drive a new Z4...and do a back to back 2.0 vrs M40 drive. Love the B58/ZF 8 sp in our '23 x3M40i.
I giggle every time I see the Supra mentioned. I realize under the skin they are mostly the same car, but damn what a difference the sheetmetal makes! The Supra looks like a wet Shar-Pei, I just can't stand it. When Saab went out of business and my '01 convertible was hurting for parts availability, I looked at the Z-4 but the SLC dealership wouldn't talk to me at all, even after two visits (never had that happen before). Ended up with a new '18 Audi S5 Cabrio, an okay car but way too many electronic gew-gaws. I still scan the local classifieds for a newer Z4, may end up with one yet.
I enjoyed this wonderful review of the Z4. I absolutely enjoy the relaxed / laid-back drives I can have (along with some high speed drives on the highway) and it has the perfect & balanced feel. It is also a practical daily-use roadster with the space & ownership costs (v. some of the others in the category).

I like the BMW M240i X-Drive more than the Z4 due to their pricing. A Mazda Miata MX-5 RF hardtop roof costs around $37,000 msrp

The Z4 M40i is in another league compare to the Miata!! It is crazy fast and smooth.

Fully appreciate the review. 4 cylinder & an automatic? That's not even a Z4 IMO... peak non-M Z4 is the E85, 6 speed manual, 3.0L straight 6.
