    Love it, not a hint of smoke, even at 16:1, must still have some left in it. Perfect for fishing on a small lake/pond, or for a little kid. This old thing will probably run forever.

      Thank you. While it isn't as peppy as it once was, it does run well and tuned up nicely. It has some rattles that could be addressed, but yes, as long as it is cared for it will probably run forever. Thanks for watching!

      Indeed! Spring finally got here for a couple of days. 81°today supposed to be about the same tomorrow and back to the 40s next week. 🙄. It will eventually decide to stick around. Thanks for watching!

    Love the 54 fleetwins it's what triggered my Evinrude twin addiction. Given a 54 with really nice original paint and decals but missing the recoil and had a broken shift handle. Bought a parts 54 fleetwins for $35 with non stuck power head but it was so ugly ( painted black) and beat up I couldn't bring myself to swap it so removed the head and carved up a 2x2 got it unstuck (didn't have any luck soaking it) swapped over one good coil,recoil and shift handle from the parts rig and she was a runner. Now I've gone down the rabbit hole with 50s Evinrude. 3 54 fleetwins 2 53 big twins 1 55 big twin 1 56 fleetwin and just got a QD-14. Still love the original paint and decals even faded patina. Keep saving and sharing these beauties. They deserve to stay out of the landfills!

      I have had some really ugly ones that turned out to be some of the best runners. Sometimes the stuck ones need a little extra gentle persuasion. Good luck woth your motors. I'll keep doing my best to several what I can from the scrapper. Have fun and thanks for watching!!

      Thank you, Bill. This one started out as a fugitive from the scrapper. It did turn kit to be a decent runner considering how it looked when I started with it. The 1960 5.5 I got from you ran super today. If you haven't watched that video yet, check it out. Thanks for watching!

    When I was a kid in early 90s my dad worked part time at an. Evinrude dealer and got a few of these old 50s motors, very fuel efficient best times putting the perimeter Dr I nkin beers lol

      Very cool! These motors will run a long time on a little fuel at low speed. These things love to just putt along. They'll do that for hours and hours and never miss a beat. Thanks for watching!

    Just picked one yesterday. I paid $40 but I'm going to pop in a new impeller before I get out on the water. Also the lower unit seems to be a bit stiff. I'm going to look into it. Excited to tear into it.

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404
      @oldjohnnyrude8404  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      New impeller is always a good idea if you don't know when it was last done. If the lower unit seems stiff on these, there is a good chance the shock absorber just below the water pump plate has broken /sprung. I always press them back together and tack weld the seam if they're broken. Then I use a brass shear pin in the prop. The powerhead has to come off to drop the lower unit to service the water pump on these motors. Always run these on 16:1 premix. These need the oil. Good luck with your motor. Thanks for watching!

    Where did you find parts for one of these? I got a 1954 evinrude 7.5 7514 cant seem to find a carb rebuild kit and the points and what not

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404
      @oldjohnnyrude8404  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I buy most of my parts from Marineengine.com, iBoats, and Crowley Marine. The carburetor kit for these is the same kit that was used into the early 1970s for similar sized motors. In your case any of the 50s 7.5hp or 5.5hp motors can be referenced for the carburetor parts. I hope that helps. Thanks for watching!

    How much does it cost in parts to “refresh “ one of the vintage outboards? I’m strongly considering getting into the hobby.

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404
      @oldjohnnyrude8404  ปีที่แล้ว

      That depends on your sources for parts and which parts are needed. If you start with a nice condition, complete motor that only needs the typical tune-up stuff and paying retail prices for as much OEM parts as availability allows, you'll be looking at around the $200 range for coils, points, condensers, plugs, wires, carburetor rebuild kit, water pump impeller, gear oil, and seals. That can go up or down as much as 50% depending on sources of parts and whether any further parts are required. When I got started in this hobby, I found out quickly that I needed to hunt for deals on tune up parts (which have gotten far more expensive in the last few years) and needed to buy junk motors for cheap when I found them to have a source for other non-consumables. It is still fairly tough to flip them for any worthwhile profit if there is any part of you that has that as a potential goal. It can be done, but it isn't easy. The old motors just aren't worth that much unless they're something very special. If you do get into the hobby, I highly recommend joining AOMCI.ORG as a dues paying member and even joining a local club chapter if you have one near by. It's a great club with LOTS of valuable resources. Thanks for watching!

    Have you ever replaced the top oil slinger/seal on a 1954 7.5? It looks like mine is leaking. Any suggestions?

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404
      @oldjohnnyrude8404  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The oil slinger itself should.nevwr need to be replaced. What usually happens is the drain passage that feeds the oil mix back into the crankcase gets blocked. It may be necessary to split the crankcase to clear that passage and get the oil flowing back down to the crankcase. It is normal for a small amount of oil to escape that slinger, but it shouldn't be much. If it is enough to affect your ignition by fouling the points, that passage probably needs to be cleaned out. Thanks for watching!

    How much do one of these motors go for?

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404
      @oldjohnnyrude8404  ปีที่แล้ว

      The value of these is quite subjective. It depends greatly on your location and the condition of the motor, both cosmetic and mechanical. One in running, usable condition and average cosmetic condition would typically sell for $200-$250. One in very nice cosmetic condition with a fresh tune up service, resealed gearcase, water pump impeller, proven to be a good runner may go for as much as $500. Average condition not running $20-$80. I paid $15 for this one not running, looked like crap and had some missing parts. Thanks for watching!

    It’s a bit noisy and not so good looking but still a great runner. Good job!

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404
      @oldjohnnyrude8404  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yup, it's rattly and it's looks reflect a well used background. It was very rough when I bought it and it's back to a reliable runner again. Thanks for watching!
