Living in the Basel (Switzerland) area, I was at this AVO Basel Session of Willy's, and you can bet, people got simply crazy. I have never seen a concert of any worldstar just like this.

What an artist Willy was! Under appreciated by the mainstream. Though he wrote many great songs, he could really do justice to other artists like this song. Check out his rendition of The Belfast Cowboy's "Would You Could You" RIP Mr DeVille, you left us too soon
Bob, there was a particular reason why he didn´t get the attention he had earned. Te reason was that he never wanted to play and produce the songs the contracted record labels wanted him to play therefore he mostly had only a few songs for one record company. A god friend of mine told me how the system charts works: record companies provide the radio stations with records which should be played for commercial reasons. This way stars were produced which the companies wanted to be stars. In former times when you heard a song you liked you went to a record shop and bought the product. Sales figures and how often a song was played were he basic reasons for a hit, not the quality of the musicians. Sometimes I see the name of Nino de Angelo. I don´t want to offend anybody and taste is different, but listen to one song of him and tell me if he is talented as a singer. Young girls liked him ! Think about such beaus like David Cassidy or some boygroups.

"Carmelita" is not Willy's "own words." It was written by a guy living in Echo Park who was struggling with heroin addiction. When the writer sang this song of his, he didn't infuse it with energy like Willy does. High energy doesn't fit this song's mood at all. As a guy who actually was sinking down the writer just didn't have it. The writer also gave this song a Mariachi sound befitting its lyrics. Willy doesn't bother with that. Lots of people have covered this song, and some people prefer the alternative versions. As far as I'm concerned they're all whiffs. None of them are even very good attempts.

I wonder why he didn't go to the IV chord during the chorus phrase. On the word "down," it should go to the IV chord. I can't possibly be the only person who noticed this. I wonder what Warren Zevon had to say about this.
The perfomance is pretty good but its a bit annoying that so many artist covering this song have taken to hijacking the lyrics and blowing it out of context in the process. Warren Zevon wrote the song the way he did because it makes sense that way. We are talkin about a down and out junkie. He's not hearing Mariachi 'music' on his radio. He's hearing Mariachi 'Static' on his radio cause he can't afford no transistors. This guy has only got a worn out valve radio and it crackles with static as "the tubes glow in the dark". Verse 2 and 3 have been swapped around and the lyrics changed to what people who don't understand the song 'think' they should be. Our junkie don't "pawn his Smith and Weston" pistol to go down to meet his man to buy more smack, he pawns his 'Smith Corona' which is a very old USA brand of ribbon typewriter to get more smack. Otherwise, how the hell, if he just pawned his revolver, is he "sitting here playing solitaire with my pearl handled deck" That line discribbes a junkie so remorseful and down on his luck, that his game of solitaire is to load a single bullet into his pearl handled 6 shooter, spin the revolver against the ratchet, put the barrel to his head and pull the trigger to see if the 6 to 1 odds of Russian Roulette will give him a way out. That way, you didn't technically suiside and break any spiritual taboos you may have against taking your own life, you simply lost in a game of chance... Anyhow, if he had pawned his Smith and Weston pistol in verse 2, he wouldn't have that pearl handled baby to blow his brains out in verse 3......just say'in 😁

they both understood being strung out........ Deville was well respected by his peers , and absolutely unique. My son agrees with you, I like them both. Zevon aside from being a great songwriter had a way of being credited on other people's albums as playing piano, or guitar . Fan of both from way back........ very different cats. Willy did a duet with Brenda Lee that I can't find anymore, wish I could.
