    If you play around with the new Earth (earth.google.com/web/) I'd love to know what favorite places you visited. Here's one of my favorite places in the world (Lo first took me there): goo.gl/SnBMAA | Here's where I work, in Google's NYC office: goo.gl/C5lkBk | Here's the basketball team I love: goo.gl/0HLoQw

      Nat and Friends The Android app update is not there for me yet... Can't play with roll the dice... :( Could be nice you make sure everyone can install the update before announcing it at Google. It's not the first time I experience early, not effective announcement and this is frustrating...

      Hopefully the Chinese and Russian state people give the Google Earth plane people permission to fly over their cities so there can finally be 3D imagery of Moscow, St. Petersburg, Shanghai and Beijing for example.

    • @paradonym
      @paradonym 7 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Given the level of detail the earth planes capture I bet Rockstar would have to fly around each block ~30-40 times to meet their requirements of detail - but with a little manpower to correct the 3D material behind... It could be an affordable way of doing this.

    • @tennicktenstyl
      @tennicktenstyl 7 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      DerParadonym flight simulators would benefit. just like ex. FlightGear, which uses it's own (crappy) maps and downloads them in real time. X-Plane is good but still requires a lot of work. just imagine flying over your neighborhood where your house is in 3D and has proper texture instead of generic "it's an urban area so we will slap there some houses and put Autogen 3D models" approach

    I have loved Google Earth since its earliest days. I have fond memories of playing with the flight simulator and scarcely remember the feature being an Easter egg of sorts; only available in the desktop version of Google Earth. It was such an ominously realistic experience to fly that mock plane, equally as mesmerising as the Earth program still is to this day! I sure miss that flight simulator, but I'm also overjoyed to see how Google Earth has evolved through the years. It is absolutely one of my favourite ways to get away.

    My eight year old son lived on Google Earth last school year traveling all over the world. He learned about the post office on top of Mount Fuji (Hey, Mom! What's that building?), Vinson Massif, Mount Everest, how to get around Paris to find Notre Dame from the Eiffel Tower, and Corcovado in Rio MAINLY but really everywhere! But one day he said, "MOM! There's something that is going to give me nightmares!!" He had found in Iowa a structure that looked like Devil's Tower, WY, but even taller and more scary! It was huge! He said, "It looks like the Eye of Sauron!" We were puzzled until we tried street view and discovered it was a clump of trees that had been photographically skewed to look infinitely taller! Wow! He will never forget that!

    Wow this was almost 7 years ago as I write this on Tuesday March 19th, 2024 at approximately 10:15am EST. The updates and features on Google Earth have changed dramatically since the release of this video!!! One huge one is that we have gone from 3D to 4D. Also, Google has changed the name of “Earth Engine” to simply “Timelapse”. This is the 4D update I Mentioned. So Timelapse is the 4D interactive map that shows how the Earth has changed over time, from 1984 to 2022. This is super rad to me personally as I was born in 84’ so I can see literally everything that has changed/progressed/regressed/deteriorated from the year I arrived on this 3rd planet from the Sun to almost the present day!!! This feature is absolutely amazing!! This feature includes new imagery from 2021 and 2022. Like I said almost present day. Another thing changed since 2017 is the quality of images. Satellite imagery is now more detailed, and new layers provide more information about different locations. I love those picture bubbles. Also the layering has improved a lot. I love looking at the earth bare with very few if no layers then turning on everything. The street view is what allows these photo bubble things to be seen. In relation to the photogrammetry function you have Earth Studio now. What this does is that it analyzes your render before starting, which helps cut down on duplicate frames and other rendering artifacts. Also the measurements are awesome!! Did you know that most modern maps or maps we saw in books and walls of classrooms growing up (if you were born in the 80s as I was) is the fact that the European continent, well mostly the Russian part of it has been for some reason made to appear larger than Larger than the African continent but in actuality Africa is larger in terms of width!!
    What they don’t mention here though is the government’s mandated editing of “sensitive” imagery. I.e. photos of “things” the government does not want the public to see/believe is real. That includes a litany of of strange and bizarre things!However, they don’t always catch every single thing! For example, I was looking at Google *MAPS* images of Toronto from an overhead view and then I clicked on a 3D image right next to the link or “pin” entitled “Toronto Skyline”. This was a 3D pic allowing you to see all around as if you were really there and it was a view of the (obviously) Toronto Skyline from one of the Toronto Islands just south of the city offshore in Lake Ontario. I emphasized Google Maps vs Google Earth as they use different images. So on Google Maps I clicked on that pin of 3D capable images right near the Toronto Skyline pin on Wards Island south of the city and was looking all around in the 3D capable pic and I was able to see or able to spot 3 or 4 white spherical objects in that 3D capable image near the “Toronto Skyline” pin location on Google Maps. Those white things can only be described as UAPs!!! They look like the now famous ones that have been featured around the web on different forums and TH-cam channels’ videos; the solid white, opaque orb thingys that are certainly not a bird or a ‘known to the public”human made flying machine, ie not a drone nor plane!!! Also, something I just found is on Google Earth, is a picture from the same location/link/pin of the “Toronto Skyline”. But this time it wasn’t a separate 3D image, you click the actual pin but not on Maps but on Google Earth. And when you click that pin there is an array of pictures. Why is there always the ubiquitous “20” or so selected photos that both Google Earth and Maps offer for any location ??? Any ways back to the pin on Google earth entitled “Toronto Skylines” and within those pics there is a photo posted by a Miguel Angel Ortega Hernandez that is picture 6 of 20 and it features a man (could be Miguel lol) in winter jacket with his hands in his pockets and it’s a nighttime shot and the city of Toronto is aglow behind him and in the upper right corner of the photo frame you can see something that is in the air and it doesn’t appear to be a normal looking bird, plane or drone and could possibly be a UAP. This one is not as definite as the Google Maps pin’s 3D photo of the same area with the white orbs in the sky. This Google Earth one is one of the 20 offered pics and there is something above and to the right of Miguel. It isn’t as definitive of being UAP as the first one but just as weird right??? And those are the ones o happened to have noticed. Think of the other 10s of millions of photos they have and the 3D photos that they have and they cannot possibly go thru everyone that is posted to there and is not a pic that they added but someone else and I am sure they look at those too but some things that are strange and that the government doesn’t want you to see gets put on the app!!! Also another huge area of concern for the government is basically the entirety of Antarctica 🇦🇶. There are numerous weird things happening and captured on that continent as well. Also there are different anomalies in the oceans. I am sure that the government is privy to ALL of the photos that Google takes but again cannot stop all the photos that may include something other worldly or other dimensional that the government doesn’t want the public to see but it gets thru by people uploading pics!!! I’ll try to add the pictures that I have found on the comment above this one !!

    Who can even possibly dislike this video. Amazing stuff. Wow, thanks Nat. The question that always bogged me was how calm there were no people and very little cars in the 3d view. And the answer was much simpler than I thought as you elegantly illustrated with a cool eraser. In a few years/decades this technology will get so good and will be complemented by unbelievably powerful computing power that we will simply prefer if earth was more like Google Earth than the other way around. It's always spring!!

      There is a huge market for geographic data and the processing and visualisation of said data. Governments, landowners, architects, mining companies, etc. Also, it's not like Google is doing all that by themselves. Most of the imagery is bought from satellite operators, government agencies and other mapping companies from around the world. Their unique capability lies in the stitching, computer vision and rendering algorithms that enable them to offer such a stunning result.

      Miguel, humans have been trying to make better maps forever. There is a HUGE amount of stuff you can do - other than sell ads - with good maps. For example, with the 3D depth maps built from the lidar data combined with annually averaged cloud cover data and the orientation of a building relative to the sun, you can make good estimates on how much solar will help. Do that at scale and you reduce dependence on power. You can detect illegal deforestation and fishing to help keep our natural resources alive. There's lots of corny, feel-good stuff and there's an entire group at Google that's doing it and helping partners like NGOs do it worldwide. See www.google.com/earth/outreach/special-projects/
      Disclosure: I was part of that corny-sounding group when this video was released and worked on Earth for 12 years, so I actually believe this stuff.

Of course there's the privacy issue that people like to bring up, but the sheer accessibility to information they bring to people far outweighs this in my opinion. Got a question? Google it. Need directions? Google it. Want to see what a street looks like before you get there? You get the picture. You've done some of the greatest work humanity has seen to date.

    I hope you consider ways to encapsulate and preserve not only the data, but ways/tools to access it if the entire ecosystem tanks and we are once again primitives scrabbling through the rubble for food. Or simply documenting what we lose...
    GE Folks, have you considered adding a GIS layer for ocean HEIGHT? What happens if it goes up only six inches, what happens at 3 feet...

    If you ever get a chance to use Google Earth in VR, take it! I’ve used it with my HTC Vive with Room Space and it is absolutely mesmerizing. This is how GE was meant to be used. Get ready to spend hours lost over the Earth. It has Gozilla-like mode where you are about 50 feet over the landscape and walking around in the middle of it. Think Ironman on his first flight. It feels exactly like that.

    • @Max24871
      @Max24871 7 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      Drones are planes. Just remotely controlled ones. I think it would be a legal challenge in many places, while you can get permission to fly a regular plane with people in there relatively in easy in most countries

    • @MrLongman2008
      @MrLongman2008 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +BMicraft I think they will face the same legal challenge if this is the point.
      In my opinion, the drones won't be suitable because they can't carry big cameras and batteries. The pilot can maneuver with the plane better when he/she is sitting in it. But maneuvering a huge drone remotely can be a serious challenge.

    • @Acampandoconfrikis
      @Acampandoconfrikis 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      As far i know, they're good for small areas
      Why? Because HQ cameras are kinda heavy, and the most expensive drones can have 30 min batteries (while a plain can fly for MANY hours)
