phenomenal. truly. four comics that deliver from the intellect rather than the painful needy side of comedy, have one of the most present, human, and humane conversation I've heard, and, peppered with killer punch lines and callbacks.

This was genuinely something special. Jimmy Carr is always hysterical, but in this he shows some humanity, and a philosophical depth that I never would have expected from him.

  • @BassTromBen

This is why I love comedy. Most of the comedians are such interesting, intelligent folks. I often wonder how many people understand the depth behind all the dick jokes. I’m a musician with comedian leaning interests, and I feel like much of what Jimmy says pertains to my field as well, and the comedic interest is born of intelligent parents, one of whom is bipolar and mean. She terrorized our household, so my sister took care of watching out for us, and my role became the energy bringer. I was always trying to find a way to turn awkward/painful/scary moments into laughter. That’s how I’ve always dealt with it, especially when I’m feeling anxious or troubled. Laughter was our medicine, and I was the house pharmacist.
Jimmy is so great. I’m thrilled to have stumbled across this podcast. Thanks for the gem, gents.

Big fan of everything and everyone here, but not knowing what an isotope is off the top of your head doesn't make religion any more true. "I don't know" is a huge part of science and it doesn't make any religious claim. That sentence meant essentially nothing.

The whole 10,000 hours thing is repeatedly constantly through this podcast but it's actually nonsense. It's nothing to do with 10,000 hours. Spending a lot of time on something is inherently a per-requisite to getting good at something, but it's nothing to do with specifically 10,000 hours (the amount of time required is relative to both the complexity of the task and how competitive it is with others to excel and there are many additional causal factors including things that are beyond your control such as genetic traits and opportunity (luck).
Most of us could spend our entire lives. Not 10,000 hours, 100,000 hours or more pushing to become an astronaut but the statistical probability of that actually happening is very low. This is because the competition is extremely high and the number of people who are actually sent to space is very low. Therefore, if opportunity (luck) only seems as though it's a small factor, it will become the strongest predictive factor when every candidate has spent their 10,000 hours.

It's a different kind of the same type of atom. Meaning that it has a different number of neutrons but the same number of protons. I thought he meant that people don't know why things can have different chemical properties when they are so similar and that is still mysterious. But, you 1-upped him with your ignorance and was like "yeah...what is an isotope?". Either way I get it. Jimmy is so known for a quick set-up and move on, so it was interesting to hear him slowly build a premise. He kind of seemed a little coked up. Maybe he's just in a hurry.

Thats a bad advice xD Dont lean into just one thing and ignore your other talents if you have more than one. In this world your skill is needed in every little corner. Imagin you became a comedian and you are quite funny. But there are 1000 other comedians like you. No one needs your comedic skills anymore. The market is filled. So what do you do? You go to your next best thing and do it your newest best thing. Or even better you become a generalist and do all of the things at the same time. You will not become an expert in any of these things specifically but you can do more things at once and this will land you way more jobs. Way more happiness this way. Because you dont get dissapointed in yourself afterwards when you see that noone needs your skills because just you are talented.
