    Karnataka is the birth place of idli. A precursor of the modern idli is mentioned in several ancient Kannada works. Vaddaradhane, a 920 CE Kannada language work by Shivakotiacharya mentions "iddalige", prepared only from a black gram batter. Chavundaraya II, the author of the earliest available Kannada encyclopaedia, Lokopakara (c. 1025 CE), describes the preparation of this food by soaking black gram in buttermilk, ground to a fine paste, and mixed with the clear water of curd and spices.

    Dear Kunal, I used to live in Mumbai during the late 80s and early 90s. My favorite city even though I am from Kolkata and now live in Delhi. You have revived my interest in Mumbai and I must visit only to eat some of the food you have been showing- the Irani cafes, Scotch broth, sizzlers etc. This episode is also great and I will definitely try the special idlis. Also finally I found a place which serves idiappam with coconut milk. It used to be my favorite at the Woodlands outlet in Nariman Point. Thank you so much. 🌹👊

    I have had in past interesting conversations with old cashier of Idli house at King circle outlet. Some insights 1. Mumbai coconuts come from Gujarat, we get coconuts from coastal Karnataka/Kerala border areas. However their is shortage of these coconuts so large expansion will be difficult 2. Home made Tup is good with parcel idlis 3. I used to tease him about Oriya cooks in his restaurants, he used to say we train our cooks well and all our people Tulu//Konkani have become well off in Mumbai now. 4. I used to tease him about Jain Sambhar, he used to say it’s a business decision as customers insist on food without onion garlic.
    The Plain Dal of Idli house is very tasty somehow. So are the sweet dish Patoli available during season.

    They have moved next to their restaurant last few months since the old location building now under redevelopment. Slightly inconvenient as one needs to sit on footpath outside Matunga east Station to eat. Your earlier review udipi Rama nayak food was with son of Mr.Satish, Mr.Shashant who is very gracious but for a change Good to see owner Mr.Satish smile so much and engage in conversation.Been their customer since 40+ years for a good reason. They missed out sweet Jackfruit idli- possibly due to seasonal issue.

    Kewda leaves are used extensively in Asian cuisine especially in desserts, which are called as Pandan leaves. I am sure the Mudho idlies cooked in Kewda leaves must be yumm...

      Almost all South Indian restaurants in matunga (CR)serve jain sambar.
      You can definitely confirm this with them.

    It is situated very near my residence at King's Circle / Matunga, where I resided for 58 years of my Life.
    Humble Satish Nayak is the son of legendary Rama Nayak, who first started South Indian Udipi Hotel in King's Circle Matunga.
    Humble Satish Nayak is an allrounder, with his contributions , even in field of Education.

    masala idli aka sanna khotto should be eaten with lots of cocnut oil poured on crushed ones.
    and we eat khotto and moodo adding fried oil on top.

    You can include sweet/spicy cucumber idli, sweet/spicy sweet pumpkin idli, sabudana idli & vermicelli idli also.
    Shavai can also be combined with batata humann, batata vagh & mirsange (green chilly only) uddak which is a speciality of Teerthahalli.

    They also serve jackfruit idli. Idlis can be made more healthier by using sorghum or redmillets instead of rice and by using higher ratio of urad dal content to rice/sorghum/millet content.

    Can ordinary idlis can be stored without freezer for 2-3 days for traveling?? How it can be??? And then how the chutney should be prepared?

      2 days for sure.... Instead of chutney you should make idli podi, molga podi... That powder mixed with oil can be coated to idli and had
