High respect to Elektron for how they keep updating the Digitakt instead of making you purchase a new machine like others would do. Loved the video, you’re a Digitakt legend. One remarkable thing about these new machine modes is that they’re extremely useful “entry level” features, they actually make things easier for the non-pros, like making sampling a lot more useful since now you can easily be on time. I do have to say I always used the “assign” on the src button to choose the samples!. For next updates I really wish they would focus on simplifying and making the sound pool more logical and practical, browsing to the correct samples is quite painful still.
Tahiche: By "simplifying and making the sound pool more logical and practical", do you mean the way the sounds aren't grouped logically? (E.g., place all the bass drum sounds together, then snare drums, then toms, etc... ??) If so, I agree!!! It's a waste of time to cycle through 8 instruments you know you don't want, just to get to the next bass drum sound (as an example). Note, I'm an absolute (50 year-old) noob to drum machines (but very experienced in samplers/keyboards -- going back to the mid 80's Ensoniq Mirage & Emax SE ) -- but I knew that I wanted a *sampling drum machine* - not some 808 replica, or other analogue style drum machine - so I bought the Digitakt and have had it a few days. Learning the interface and features is a steep learning curve (for me), but a very fun one nonetheless! I also upgraded to a new synth: Nord Wave 2 (and a 'cheapo' Behringer Crave analog synth -- essentially a Moog Mother 32 clone) so my mind is spinning trying to figure out all the interfaces to these new "toys".
Hi @@vaprex !. I mean the sound pool in general as a place to store sounds or presets… A way to browse and recall sounds, making your own library. You know that you have the sample browser and then the sound pool which is sample + settings (envelope, filters, effects, loop points, etc), so more like a track sound preset. I’d like to use it as a “favorites” kind of thing for easy access to some sounds. But this Sound Pool is not easy to manage. Here’s a few examples… 1) if you want to save a sample as a pool sound, it should use the sample file name as a starting point, as it is you have to dial in a name and it’s a very lengthy process if you’re building a library with hundreds of sounds, 2) you can’t save a sound from the sample browser to the sound pool, you have to add the sample to a track and then save to sound pool. Again, this is very tedious if you want, like I do, to use the sound pool as a “favorites” or “most used” for easy access. My biggest complaints with the Digitakt are all in the “preset” or “sound recall” department. A major one is that I’d like to be able to save kits, so that you could keep the sequence info and change all sounds at once. This is a huge one for me.
O man. I haven’t even used song mode properly and now this! If there will ever be a step to actual live looping where the loop automatically gets assigned to a track and step, and real slice mode where you can set the length of each slice manually by pressing tracks, I am marrying this thing!
I've always hated to just "guess" parameters based on your input from samples, especially with loops and cuts from loops. The new BPM-based features are a dream come true and have really gotten me back to creating and recreating stuff!
This came as a HUGE surprise to me this morning and I couldn't be happier! This is a massive upgrade to an already amazing groove box! Can't wait to dive in tonight when I get home. Also, great video as always. Very helpful and informative yet easy to understand and wrap my brain around! 10/10!
This is such a powerful update! It's not quite enough to put my OT on the bench but it's made it seem a lot more extravagant! Thanks for the video Dave ✌
it is nice to see a company doesnt abandon their gear or intentionally keep it nerfed when obvious improvements are technologically possible. this is unheard of in a device that isnt super new.
Is it an OT? Not exactly but it’s getting pretty damn close. The Digitakt will never replace my Octatrack, that’s why I have both 😉. Talk about added value after the sale. Elektron for the win! Slaying. It.
Electron's support is so good, but it makes good business sense for them too. You don't get the impression that if you buy something from them that's a few years old that it will be abandoned. I have a Korg Electribe Sampler 2 (came out 2014) and it's a great machine, however it's on version 2.0 (released 2016) but they still sell it new.
im in the same boat. I bought mine last fall, two days before they introduced song mode. the poor dude who sold it to me told me he was going to buy another now to replace the one he sold me. If he hadnt bought another one yet, i can wager he has one now.
Holy smokes! Amazing review, Dave. That last loop you made with lfo modulating slices is ridiculously awesome. Love your work, brother. Thanks for doing what you! ❤️🙏🏼💪🏼🔊
Could you explain that last loop part to me? What’s the difference between modulating the sample selection in this mode vs the normal trig pattern? It sounded so cool!
🙏 So because I programmed a rhythm in the sequence and locked different slices to that those trigs. Then used lfo on sample slot and landed on a nice selection of samples within my project. Definitely could get a similar happy accident in regular one shot machine by locking different starting points though :)
@@DiegoFuego87 exactly :) it does that. Also think this can be very cool tinplate with when using a bunch of exact sample loops in a row in the sample slots. And cool. Enjoy the course and let me know if you have any questions about it. 👍
This was completely unexpected! Slices in particular seem like something that might be a lot of fun in my workflow. I totally agree about your point in the end, Digitakt was already great as it was... this just adds more interesting ways to play with it. Thanks for the video!

Recording samples by N steps super amazing, that's why I love Octatrack because there I was able to resampling strict slices, now it's possible on Digitakt
Im pretty sure i heard like 10 solid starting points for some wicked techno tracks in this review. This update might make me pull the trigger on this piece of kit. Nice work!
Again a Digitakt game changer!! The last Firmware updates really pushed the DT to new landscapes, everybody was only dreaming about! Slowly DT is surpassing the octatrack IMHO.
@@SphericEl I admit the OT has still few specialties DT doesn't have, but after this 1.50 update, I think I can forget about an idea I was pondering since few years: get an OT as well.

I’ve just started using the new machines and I’d like to say that it opens up a world of possibilities for “non techno or electronic music” users. Try sampling yourself playing a guitar loop. With the new modes you can then completely transform your sound, granulize it, bitrush, change speed, play with filters and envelopes and it’ll still be in time to play your own guitar loop with the keyboard. Takes you to unexplored and fun territories, and it’s your own unique sound. This couldn’t be done before as the speed would change with the pitch. Try it out!
