This is a great little trick. I've pretty much been adding this to a lot of my tracks and it really makes you learn the conditionals really well which has also leaked into evolving percussive patterns. The Digitakt is really something special.
this is a mind-blowing trick omg. just tested it myself, being a complete noob with this instrument, and it really does give satisfying, evolving yet constrained patterns even at higher bpms. thank a lot for this video!
Whoa. I'm so glad I bought one last Cyber Monday and decided to keep it after getting frustrated with it after a month and almost sold it and so sooo glad the buyer backed out last minute and I went back to the machine and created an awesome beat within 10 minutes and then I kept sampling free drum hits and crazy loops I found online and letting it rest for a few days. Then I go back into it and push myself like I'm lifting weights at the gym - I can't use it every day but every time I go back to it, my music gets stronger.
Thanks for this tip Mr OS. Got mine this week and am delving into the possibilities it affords... What a truly remarkable instrument it is! I’m all over this idea man, cheers ✌️
I just bought Digitakt, due to the recent 1.5 firmware update the price will go up soon I believe. Thanks for sharing your insights on how to get the best out of this machine! Appreciated!
Your videos are exactly what I've been looking for, its brought me into the next level of trig wizardry, a lot of which I wouldn't have thought of on my own. The retrigs and probability really work hand in hand, until now I rarely used retrig. Been specifically wanting an arp on the digitakt too so this is an awesome workaround. This video and the shaker one are top notch. Subbed
You can use this idea in a similar manner where instead of using retrigs you can set the note length to really long. I have set up 2 bars or so with a different note every quarter with the length of the note to be infinity. Use the same probability trick. This way the note plays until it's taken over and it can make for some really nice drone control. There were a couple samples in the JUNO VHS sample pack that worked really well with this.
You are really gifted when it comes to this kind of tutorial-stuff. I already have dt since quite some time but I'm sure I will learn something new from this series.
Wish there was actually a Randomise Pattern for the track, however the Elektron sequencer can be manipulated beyond imagination which by itself is a challenge. Nice work 👍
This really doesn't help my willpower to resist buying a digitakt. I think I can only put it off for so long, everything is pointing towards getting one now you're doing tutorials for it. Thanks?
Kelvin Stephenson ! I absolutely love mine! I can’t even go into the details because I’m just learning it! But so far it’s nit going to leave my setup! It’s awesome
Hello Oscillatorsink!!! I enjoyed this very much, I am exually very happy you started to use the Digitakt, can't wait for the coming tutorials... thank you! Happy Sunday and cheers!
Thanks for this great tip! I tried to get the same effect but avoid repeating notes: take 2 tracks with the same sample and trigger on alternating steps. E.g track one triggers on 1..3...5, track 2 on 2...4...6. Set retrigs on 1/8. Like this you get that randomness without repeating notes.
Very cool idea! Honestly I love concepts like this that just open up even more possibilities. Getting a DT soon and I'm going to try this and maybe add a square lfo to bring the pitch up a 5th every so often.
The Digitakt is full of ideas like this. I love gear that has a very focused framework that you have to work within, but lots of freedom within it. Perfect balance.
I'm really glad I subbed your channel, even when you know a piece of gear well its good to see other creative ideas for inspiration and you have a very relaxing voice
Nice one. I don't think you can ever really over-stress the benefits of the Elektron sequencer. When I first introduce people to the benefits of parameter locks and conditional trigs they're sold instantly.
It's a combination of maths and magic and I like both of those things. Have you looked at the "Step Components" implementation on the OP-Z though? It's kinda amazing and does some stuff that takes some of the ideas that they've clearly "borrowed" from Elektron and expands on them on some really interesting ways. Jeremy (Red Means Recording) just did a video on them if you need a primer. I'm certainly in favour of Elektron "borrowing" some of those ideas back...
Random arps are pretty much all I use. Layer a few of them and it becomes a sort of rhythmic drone to improvise over. I'm really into what I call hybrid generative - where I try to create a balance between music that "makes its self" and music that I control.
Are you familiar with the Elektron Analog 4 MK1? Would this be a good instrument to use the tracks with arps stacked onto each other or would you recommend something better for this? Right now I'm just syncing a few latched analog synths but I would like to have the arp chords and their settings (rnd/up/down/etc) predetermined for live playing so that all I have to do is turn the track on and go to town on the knobs. @@OscillatorSink
Cosmo Spacemonkey You are speaking my language too. The Elektron A4 is a dream machine for this kind of exploration but you have to know that it does not have the specific retrig feature that Digitact, Octatrack and Analog Rytm have. Of course you can end up to the same results using its fantastic LFOs ( four per track!) and the conditional trigs of course. One more thing you must have in mind is that A4 's sequence does not send midi out. Only cv. That means that if you are thinking of using the wonderful Electron sequencer in order to midi drive your other gear you have to check Octatrack, Digitakt or Digitone. Chears!
Oscillator Sink yeah I know what you mean, not enough hours in the day. I read the DT & DN doesn’t have a song mode, how does one create and save a full song they’ve worked on (sorry new to this).
You can create chains of patterns, or what I do is perform the pattern changes live and record it - there's your song. It's nice to commit stuff "to tape"
Nicely done Oscillator Sink I have been wanting one of these for ages, but it is better to listen to its sonic potential in your very capable hands. Look forward to more complete music by you with this instrument. Would like a demo on the midi and sample links it can control. I expect you are now saving for overbridge.
The Digitakt is great. It definitely helps me get up and running quickly coming from the Digitone, but there's still lots to learn! Good news is that Overbridge is free now, so I'll get that and have a play soon, but I'm kinda enjoying it in "strictly stand alone" mode - the whole joy of hardware is not turning the computer screen on!
I just wish the LFO's were freely assignable between tracks, best feature of the Machinedrum and sadly lacking on all the other boxes. I still think its the best of the new generation boxes though.
@@OscillatorSink Had a Didgitakt for a year, then an AR joined the family. Although I'm still only learning it, there really are great sounds to be had and a Mark 1 can be picked up for relatively cheap. Be aware that the audio inputs are disappointing (low input impedance on Mk1 and no way to control parameters).
Yeah, the more i use the Digitakt the more I am convinced it is the best synth purchase I ever made. I've been having loads of fun making amplitude modulated drum sounds with the LFO set at audio rate controlling the "Sample Level" parameter. The technique creates some nice side bands that pair nicely with a sharp envelope attack. Edit: How are you making the screen appear larger in this video for clarity?
@@robertsyrett1992 no, only 1080p (that's all I have on the cameras I have). I suspect I adjusted the levels and applied some sharpening to try to squeeze everything I could out from what I had.
J Horrobin I assume this would work with the Digitone as it is the same sequencer.I do no have the dtakt but do have the digi tone soon. Thanks for any suggestions regarding the re trig menu on the dtone
Sadly it's not quite the same on the Digitone - they're not quite identical sequencers - there's no retrigger on the Digitone sadly. But don't worry - there's an actual arpeggiator so with long length trigs you can get to a similar place!
Bro, great video! Since Digitone not have trig repeats do you instead use the arp to achieve something similar or you do other tricks for random arping with DN!? Cheers! /Klas
So as the sequencer is polyphonic on the DN, you can probability lock long notes to bring them into the arp. I'll usually try to set things up so that a root note from the chord is pretty much always present in the arp to ground it (that can be as simple as locking the root with 100 percent probability for the length of the pattern, but you can use other approaches too). Then I'd probably go into the arp editor and set the arp length to mismatch the pattern length (so if my patten was 16 steps, I'd try 15 or 13 maybe) and throw some of the arp steps an octave above (and possibly a perfect 4th or 5th if I was feeling a little bit spicy, but you have to be careful with the notes in your arp if so).
Amazing trick. But i notice you're only using 1 page/16 bars so say if you're using up to 64 bars you can bring in even more variations on each page, right?
Of course, or have it follow a chord profession. But I'd also suggest that there's a tipping point when you combine the randomisation and a longer length when it might be harder for the listener to keep track of things?
Well the Digitone does already have an arpeggiator, but no random mode. But I've done similar things on the Digitone by having the arpeggiator turned on, and then just putting trigs with one or two notes on them and long lengths across the pattern - then using the same trick with the conditional trigs so that the notes on those trigs get added to the arpeggio at 'random'. It's not quite the same thing, but it's similar. Probably sounds pretty cool if you do both tricks at once on both devices too!
Oh Men sorry, I didn't know that, I'm trying to decide what to buy, the digitone or the digitakt, and it's a really hard decision Haha, thanks for your excellent videos ( :
I would say that the Digitone requires a little more effort to create "full" tracks as everything is being synthesised, but the workflow is very gratifying once you get into it. The Digitakt is a little more "instant", but still has significant layers of synthesis mixed in if you want it. I'm glad I got the Digitone first, but it was a super close call for me too.

Hi really nice vídeo, it's possible to achieve the same effect on the digitone?
Well the Digitone does already have an arpeggiator, but no random mode.
But I've done similar things on the Digitone by having the arpeggiator turned on, and then just putting trigs with one or two notes on them and long lengths across the pattern - then using the same trick with the conditional trigs so that the notes on those trigs get added to the arpeggio at 'random'. It's not quite the same thing, but it's similar. Probably sounds pretty cool if you do both tricks at once on both devices too!
