    First time viewer - fun video! I've had my Digitakt since it came out and it's so freaking amazing how much they have added. I remember when the big issue was "when overbridge??" and look how far it has come now. The new machines add so much more flexibility in direct creative exploration without having to fiddle with all these intricate hacks. In the manual they talk about the Digitakt having "soul" or something to that effect and in the past I always thought that was kinda overstated fluff, because the DT still always seemed very "mechanical" and technical and fiddly... like, yeah it could do a LOT of stuff but it's like you had to consult the Elektronauts Handbook of Secret Hacks to do all of it - but now as it is today I think I could truly stand by the sentiment that it has grown to be something with true soul in a streamlined and elegant form.

    Your final points are totally on point. There seems to be real - sustainable - philosophy from Elektron about product lifespan and the longevity of these machines through continuous (and perfectly doable) updates. I feel there was blip with the Analog series and how quickly they went from MKI to MKII, but they seem to have found their stride in UI and industrial design now

      My Mk1 a4 is going to need a ui board soon. Elektron send them for £125 each that’s pretty good for all the top encoders display and buttons. Not soldering required. It’s like ten year old and still going strong with slight unresponsive encoders when spun too fast. I’ll just store the ui board safe until it’s time to fit.

    I have both the Digitakt and the Octatrack. I'll always love the Octatrack for the two things the Digitakt can never replicate: the crossfader and external cards for holding GB's of samples!

    • @rorz999

      Lack of storage space on the Digitakt is the main thing keeping me from getting one. Yeah, I know it's not *that* restrictive compared to 90s samplers... but my other modern samples all accept some form of external storage (SD cards, USB sticks) so I can have 100s of gigs of samples at my disposable. If I got the Digitakt I fear that I'd be forever be transferring samples to and from the thing.
      I think I'll wait to see if they do an MK2 version which accepts SD cards. If they do, I'll buy without hesitation. All I want is external storage and stereo samples!

    Following the general idea of making “tricks” and “hacks” into machines that are easy to use, I have an idea about stereo tracks and control all.
    How about we make a machine called “mirror” that just links a track to another track? Choose a track to mirror, then the mirror track is the same machine, and responds to all of the controls on the mirrored track. Basically a customisable “control all” feature.
    This technically still isn’t stereo sampling, but obviously all you need to do from this point is just sample L and R channels separately and assign them to tracks mirroring each other.

    • @soffter
      @soffter  ปีที่แล้ว

      i wonder if you could do this in a way already by importing a left and right side audio track and then hard panning them in the digitakt,
      you could get around the control by just copying all the sequence data, OR using midi loopback to control both channels.
      I'm not a huge stereo guy tbh but it might be a cool experiment !

    • @nottieru
      @nottieru ปีที่แล้ว

      @@soffter midi loopback isn’t really a viable option, and sequence data doesn’t include parameter changes, but yeah, I like the idea of importing stereo tracks as two tracks via, say, Transfer:). Writing a simple script for Transfer is probably much easier than coding for an actual Digitakt firmware. Still want a mirror machine though:)

    @soffter - amazing tutorial. Opened a whole realm of possibilities! I found a really useful way to time stretch without the pitch shift and still get a really smooth sound:
    - use the Slice machine
    - set the Grid to 16 (assuming that is how many slices are in your beat)
    - assign a different slice (1 through 16) for each of the 16 steps in a Digitakt pattern
    - play with the BPM now and you get a timestretched beat which you can mute/unmute for each step of the beat, can play with the amp evelope and more....
    I have a question for you - I was hoping to find a way to repitch a oneshot sample (like a bass note) without changing the length (aka timestretch but to the original sample's length) - I can't quite find a way yet with these additions... so close.

    • @kilakituclothing
      @kilakituclothing ปีที่แล้ว +1

      After further exploration, if the BPM varies by much, the sample lengths for each slice get changed and it doesn't sound as good. I have the same conclusion as you - the old school repitch is the best for keeping the quality of the sample while changing BPM

    The repitch does the exact opposite of timestretching. It changes the pitch as you change the tempo. The whole idea of timestretching was that the pitch didn’t change as you changed tempo. This is just speeding up or slowing down a sample in time with the set tempo.
    Maybe it’s just me, having bought my first sampler 30 years ago I have a very specific idea of what timestretching is. Werp is closer to it.

      super easy!
      I would encourage you to play around with the threshold settings - this will allow you to instantaneously start sampling and record perfect loops,
      after they're recorded they can be instantly assigned to a track, then sliced or time stretched.
      you can even resample the internal bus, so you could pretty easily record 8 internal patterns and put them all on ONE pattern !

      @@soffter maybe with the help of the new step recording feature: laying down different single cycle waveforms over 64 steps, recording/resample 64 exact steps, new sample loaded in a slice machine with 64 grid (of course). this will show if 64 is always 64 in the math of the digitakt when the resampled waves are clean^^

    I feel bad for all those who bought the original Digitakt after the Digitalt II came out... Their value dropped like a rock while owners desperately try to unload them at premium cost on Reverb with no one buying them... So Glad that I held off and didn't buy the original because it was mono... Rule of thumb, never buy anything in mono that should be stereo because almost always a new version will eventually be released in stereo... 💥

      ¯\_(ツ)_/ I have yet to really feel the need to upgrade. DT1 is still a serious machine, and it will be for ages, grabbing one for 400$ is an insanely good deal, if you need a drum machine there literally is not a better value than that.
      Stereo just isn’t really that important to me, the compressor fixes, 3rd LFO, filter, and extra tracks are cool, but I don’t NEED them ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    What's that ambient track playing at the end of the video!? I know it but my brain cant tell if it's zelda or aphex twin or animal collective or a secret 4th option.

    Please help! if my sample is not recorded with an exact lenght, how can I update the start/end time so it's sliced appropriately?

    • @soffter
      @soffter  ปีที่แล้ว

      You could resample it internally with the exact bar length recording ;)

    whats the name of the break you were using in the slicing tutorial?

    • @soffter
      @soffter  ปีที่แล้ว

      that's the THINK break, it's foundational, originally found in a Lyn Collins song of the same name.

    there is a serious price increase for these machines recently, I wonder if there is a link with this update...

    • @Thirolls

      Nope it’s the inflation for the components and microprocessor.
      As u can see, all the others instruments, except the Models, are increase.
      And generally all the price of instruments in electronic music industry are increase.
