- In the early days of electric guitars and amplifiers, clean tones were the holy grail! But, a handful of pioneering musicians, armed with determination and creativity, discovered distortion!
In today's video, we delve deep into the fascinating history of distortion-how guitarists crafted this iconic effect long before pedals and amps were designed for it. From turning amplifiers all the way up, to poking holes in speaker cones, we're going to explore it all and try to recreate those sounds from back in the 1950's. 🤘 This is a journey into the past, where pioneers turned noise into a revolution.

This video was so entertaining because not many people know this is how distortion was made 🥰
Thanks so much!
Welp, you've finally gone mad! LOL! Great video. The damaged speaker held up pretty well all things considered. The knife slashes made the speaker have a kazoo effect, giving the paper the ability to vibrate against itself. Keep pushing the envelope. Continue with really fine slices from a really sharp exacto knife. The paper has to vibrate against itself to get that fuzzy tone, probably. I had the woofers in my Dahlquist stereo speakers crumble due to old age and they had that gnarly kazoo distortion sound.
Haha!! No way, that’s really interesting and makes total sense. In some ways I thought this also explained why slightly ‘worn in’ speakers tend to sound better.
RIP speaker. Literally rip.
Haha 😂 😂😂
Love the video, nothing but quality content on your channel, would have been interesting to send some (reverse) reverb through the damaged speaker!
Thanks so much! Ahh I feel like I missed a trick here. I’ll make it as a short.
Wooow , awesome video, could you talk about string gauges for drops?
Thanks! Yeah I was planning on making one actually.
Ripped speaker IR’s?
Haha sounds like a shout!
EHX actually got a fuzz pedal they call "Ripped Speaker"
No way really?
need that slashed speaker tone on the new October Drift album 🤙
Haha cheers legends!
Happy accidents... was about to say "you really got me" since that was the first version I in the day I got to know.
Link Wray, Dick Dale etc. all legends...
Just figured you have a Marshall Origin like I do...(got the 5w combo...).
Enjoy that AC30 as well!
Exactly!
Yeah it was nice exploring this stuff. I knew all the songs when I was researching this vid but didn’t know who they were by if you get me!
I think the origin is one hell of an amp for the money and might warrant it’s own video.
Haha yeah the ac30 is a beast. I don’t think I had enough time to put it in but I managed to get it for £600 at an auction
@@thesethingsmakenoises Have you experienced people parroting opinions on gear?
Like said got an Origin 5c and a Marshall DSL-1cr. Different amps and cabinets, though identical speaker. The O5c is always bashed because of its speaker while people rave about the DSL 😂
I like both and them having an attenuator switch very characterfull at low power.
5:02 are you kidding me!? It sounded completely different!
You reckon? I was worried it was too subtle!
@@thesethingsmakenoises The gnarliness might not be audible through cheap phone speakers (I just tested it on my phone), but additionally there's a drastic change in character that's really nice and that apparently will be audible on any listening device. I'm not going to slash any speakers, but I am going to try and recreate the sounds you're getting with an EQ. Or maybe with Fabfilter Volcano, actually. There's something very 80s/90s alternative about it
Just binged your channel like it was a tv show💀 but I was wondering what reverb would be better the rv6 or the holy grail or the hall of fame 2
Ahh that’s awesome thanks so much! Embarrassingly I’ve never owned any of them, but I remember when I bought my strymon I almost bought the Rv6 and it was an awesome pedal. The other guitarist in my band has bought a holy grail and it really is an awesome verb pedal.
If you’re looking at the second hand market I’ve got a video coming up on Sunday about underrated pedals and I put the line 6 ‘verbzilla’ on there. It can do some really cool octave settings and I don’t think it ever got enough kudos!
One of the best celestion for alt rock the t75 let’s poke holes in it :D
Hahaha!!
Make an impulse response of it
I might just do that!
I’m surprise that more people don’t experiment with IRs like laying a cab on it’s back and putting sand on it an making an IR from that. Or different sized chains. Maybe a plate or cup. Lol
@@DaveSteele07 That actually sounds like a great idea!
LOOOOOOL
Not sure if this is a good or a bad lol but I’ll take it either way
@@thesethingsmakenoises Hey, dude, no offense. Good video, I laughed(?) from the speakers.
Sorry for the English, I'm translating through a translator
Ahh no worries at all! ☺️ so glad you enjoyed the video!
