    My favorite "interview" with Katharine Hepburn. It's mostly her mini autobiography. She is such an Icon with a capital I. No nonsense and charming at the same time.

    That fact that she grabs her things, gets up and walks out as soon as they’re done is a beautiful moment. Classic demonstration from a no-nonsense personality doing exactly as they please, not submitting to any tradition or social influence that they don’t believe in supporting. Unapologetically being herself every moment of her life. That’s what I find so fascinating about her. It inspires me to be so likable to myself that I’m not afraid to be that person no matter what situation I’m in.

    I think Katherine Hepburn is one of the few "celebrities" I would have loved to meet. Her autobiography was wonderful. I was very envious when a friend told me he once offered to share a cab with a lady and found himself sitting next to her for an amazing ride.

    This entire dialogue was unplanned, unrehearsed, spontaneous -- basically ad-libbed. How many interviewers could do what Cavett did here? How many guests could summon the poise, the wit, and the conversational brilliance Ms. Hepburn shows throughout? Truly remarkable.

    She’s chatty, full of character and certainly not guarded. The way she describes her interesting life anecdotes is just a natural flow of enthusiasm. Her quick wit might not be so PC in today’s world but she doesn’t hold back. Certainly anti-anxiety meds commonly used now could have softened up her manner but I think this athletic and forthright woman would have flushed them all down the toilet. What a delightful personality.

    In a comment about three weeks ago, I was very critical of The Great Kate's behavior in this interview which I found to be very rude, but also said I think she was acting bossy out of nervousness and a need to control things because of her anxiety. I also said that Dick Cavette would have won her respect if he'd called her on her behavior or gave her a few zingers, himself. Then tonight I see this interview with Glen Close and her experience when meeting Katharine Hepburn and telling her a story about how watching THIS interview inspired her to strive to be as good an actress. AND Glen then reads a very touching letter she received from Kate. It just goes to show that human beings are complicated people and we never really know what makes most of us tick. The guy behind lights up a cigarette. She’s directing, dictating. She’s in control. Demanding? Precise? Insane? Maybe spray the carpet blue? Don’t tell me what’s wrong, just fix it. She is Hollywood royalty. She knows her craft. Some of this “performance” is to disguise nervousness, I believe. This is her personality. She’s a bulldozer, but has the talent to back it up! Thank you for posting this wonderful interview. I love her quote about feeling fear. I feel fear every day, but I go ahead and do things. I often question myself as to why I am so fearful of every little thing, even making a phone call. And having Katharine Hepburn, of all people, say that she thinks that all intelligent people feel fear is so helpful!

    • @IrishEyes1989
      @IrishEyes1989 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@IrishEyes1989and intelligent person realizes all the outcomes and feels each one of them which is the source of anxiety/ fear l knowing what may come. Fear is a natural part of life, that little voice that says “ this may not work out” . Intelligent people have that voice inside of them but the thing to do is to forge ahead. Fear is there but they don’t let it drive the car. Keep that fear in back seat. Most of the things we fret about never come to pass. That’s why we can’t allow our fears to rule our actions and drive the car. If we allow our fear to rule us the car won’t go anywhere. Again what’s the worse that can happen, get fired from a job that had no chance to enhance your life? Whenever one is fired they are doing you a favor, they can’t keep you from the job that keeps you happy by keeping you in a job that is enslaving you.

    there is the story told of Barbara Streisand asking Kate what it was like for her to do live stage work in Coco, assuming Kate had never done live theater before. I gather the 'correction' was quick and frosty. The list of her theatrical credits includes multiple Shakespearian and classic Greek dramas and comedies, several Philip Barry plays including Philadelphia Story. Then there is a Bernard Shaw production, J.M Barrie I could go on.

  • @HTNPSullivan
    @HTNPSullivan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +43

    There are a couple of things I noticed in this interview that I thought were very cringe worthy.
    First of all, I used to watch Dick Cavett all the time when I was younger (I am 67). He can be an engaging interviewer but he did have a tendency to be star struck, and in this case, he is clearly intimidated by The Great Kate. She kept throwing zingers and outright insults at him for this reason, she was testing him and trying to get him to come back at her. I really think she would have enjoyed some zingers from him, but he was like a dog rolling over and showing its belly to the Alpha dog.
    Second, I am actually shocked at how mean she is in a couple of instances. For example, you'd have to know that Dick Cavett suffered from severe depression and was taking medication for it to realize how disrespectful she is being when at one point, she refers to what she saw on his dressing room table (his medication) 18:19 - and you can see him dip his head down in embarassment. WTF? I don't care who she is, that is not the way to talk to someone and especially while on their talk show. So uncalled for. And then of course, she tells him to shut up ( 13:30 )
    I also think that her bossing people around, complaining about the rug, etc. was actually about her OWN nervousness. People who feel nervous often will try to control their environment in some way. Notice the body language - her leg raised with her foot on the table, creating a protective barrier... Of course, I also think she's used to people being at her beck and call. But again, I do think that if he'd given her some of her own medicine, she would have warmed up to him.
    Kate was a strong, talented, very independent woman and I admire her for all of those things, as well as for her body of work. Young woman can learn a lot from her about being self-confident (even if she did have stage fright, as she said) and being assertive. But the level of disrespect I saw in this interview was really disappointing.

    • @carlaeskelsen
      @carlaeskelsen 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Agreed, and thank you for your reasoned comment. When she was forthright, I found her quite charming, but when she was abrupt and grasping I really cringed. After complaining about stage crew not listening to her, (they aren't supposed to interact with guests, at all, ever) and complaining about Cavett interrupting her, she then constantly interrupted him; I don't think he got to finish a single question in the whole interview.
      She mentioned people who don't listen and only talk, and yet...

    I admired her for many reasons - her talent, independence, energy, work ethic, etc. - but she was clearly quite self-centered. Maybe it was insecurity or anxiety. When I was in high school (around age 16 or so), I collected autographs of women I admired, and I wrote her a letter explaining the things about her that I looked up to. I was so excited to get a return letter with her name on the top left corner - but when I opened it, it was a hand-typed letter from her assistant explaining that Miss Hepburn did not sign autographs. I am nearly 60 now, and I still remember this. If her assistant could take the time to type a letter, it seems like Miss Hepburn might have respected her fans enough to sign it. After all, actors and other celebrities would not have careers without their fans. Like I said - very self-centered. I don’t think she would have made a very good friend, she would have been too high-maintenance. But she was still interesting enough that I sat through this entire interview.

      I stopped reading comments here. I think you've nailed it pretty well. There's a scene in African Queen were she struggles to call Charlie, "dear"....That scene - that particular line -
      has always haunted me as the most iconic Hepburn line of all times. That was truly her in both movie and real. life. Until this interview I had mo way of knowing for sure (but suspected) just how self centered and insecure she was. I love all of here movies! She was truly a giant but, she also knew how insecure and awkward she was and it was the lines in the script that gave her the structure and chance to share just how lovely she would want everyone to think she was because in real life, she was probably schizophrenic.

    I would describe KH as teetering on the edge of sanity. Her brother committed suicide. It is important not to create a partial view of this important actress by sugar coating her life. She comes across as connecting with the interviewer with difficulty and lacking grace. She is jagged, rigid and icy in her deportment. This is a tortured woman. Lets not deny the truth, please.

    She was a sharp no nonsense straight talking and a great actress they dont make them like Ms Hepburn or Bette Davis anymore just a bunch of left wing divas who are not that very good at acting Demi Moore, Sharon Stone good looking eye candy but cant act for peanuts. Thank God i was born to some of the greats Clint Eastwood, Paul Newman, Robert Redford, Spencer Tracy, Robert Denero , kirk Douglas, Micheal Douglas take note am struggling with women actors Jessica Lange Jane fonda Susan Surrandan. She’s sitting with her legs spread wide open and demanding they move chairs, complaining they aren’t responding to her demands, and demanding they nail down the chair so she can “put her feet on it”? The way she’s sitting is as abhorrent as her behavior! Wow! I liked her a LOT better before I saw this interview!!

    • @CookingBlues2u
      @CookingBlues2u 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      She's not sitting with her legs wide open. She merely has one leg up, you nor I know why. I know personally, I have terrible sciatic nerve issues and putting a leg up helps. When I talk to someone, I expect an answer, it's rude to listen to someone repeatedly ask a question and not get an answer. That's how these studio sets are, it's not someone's home, they paint things, move things, nail things down, pull things up, all to make the best experience. She's a master, you think she doesn't know this?

      Of course the studio will do it because this is the 1st time Hepburn agreed to do interview.
      Dick Cavett, along with every other talk show host in town, had been trying to get Katharine Hepburn on his show for years. One afternoon in 1973, for reasons that he never completely understood, the woman who had been avoiding the press for most of her life and had never appeared on television agreed to simply come into Cavett’s studio to have a look. She wanted to see how it would feel to be on his set. So when suddenly she agreed to do the interview of course they will do what she wanted
