The Dick Cavett Show: Bette Davis (1971)
If you're a fan of the Dick Cavett Show then you already know what a great interviewer he was. If you're unfamiliar with him then you'll certainly enjoy his show because he managed to go just about anywhere with whoever he had on the show. Today, when looking back on this show, you can't help but be very grateful for it because he hosted a number of legends and we usually got a lot of great information from them.
The legendary Bette Davis too the set for this wonderful interview that has her talking about kissing her leading men, how she lost her virginity, a joke about Joan Crawford and various other topics. What's so great about Cavett is that he can take on a serious discussion of her career but then throw in a wonderful off-topic conversation. Davis is certainly on fire here as she tells some great stories and there's no question that her chemistry with Cavett is top-notch. Fans of both will certainly want to watch this episode.

Bette and Dick really enjoyed each other’s company. Her appearances on his show are just the best. She’s relaxed, funny and up for anything.
I wished I got her signature long time ago but computers were not available to find a way to get her autograph.
@@homegown1234 My uncle, born 1913, was stationed in CA during the war and got her autograph at the Hollywood Canteen. He said she was sitting at a table with her house slippers dangling on her feet. The autograph did not survive, but he did until 2006.

Ahh, the perks of being 17: I could stay up as late as I wanted on a “school night.” I was a on a culture kick, so I never missed the Dick Cavett Show. On my one trip to NYC I was determined to sit in the audience of the Cavett show. Midtown Manhattan, 1 p.m. I arrive at the theater and query anyone in line with an extra ticket. 10 min. before showtime I score a seat. Bandleader Bobby Rosengarden is playing the intro theme. I’m finally going to see my favorite late-night talk show host! The moment I’ve been waiting for: announcer Fred Foy says, “Ladies and gentleman here’s STEVE ALLEN!” Missed opportunity: Cavett was on vacation :( There is a happy ending: five years later when Cavett moved to PBS I got a front-row seat as he interviewed legendary director George Cukor.

She was the greatest actress of motion pictures. Gloria Swanson was the greatest silent movie actress and Dick Cavett was the greatest talk show host there ever was.

@@RoseMakesIt Cavett worked for Carson. Cavett was a more thorough interviewer, more in depth and longer interviews. Carson was a better entertainer as evidenced by his 30 year tenure at the top.

Not that Johnny Carson wasn't good because he was. It's just that Dick Calvert what is the more on a deeper level of interviewing and very well reed. I will admit dick was a person with dry humor. With all that being said he certainly is a true intellectual.
I agree about Bette & Dick but I think Garbo was greater actress even in her silent films ...
Look at how she keeps the thought alive at the end of every sentence in her reading. Her skill shines through unequivocally, clear and strong.
Miss Bette Davis was not endowed with a marvelous singing voice but she can certaily carry a tune. She was endowed however with a genial acting talent. They definitely broke the mold after she was born. No one can match her to this day.❤

As Bette said , music is so vital in movies, the music in Dead Ringer was my favorite, a truly haunting and magnificent score which captures the essence of the whole drama .
I agree with you, but my favorite movie score is Moon River, from Breakfast At Tiffany's. Does anyone agree? I'm not taking anything away for your favorite.

What a wonderful show to watch...I wish it would have gone on for hours and hours...I love how at ease they are with each other and the little jabs are funny to watch. And yes, I agree with Bette, Dick did look beautiful in that tux.

Those bow ties are SO ludicrously large lol!! That’s just about the only thing that ‘dates’ this. I’ve never read that book, but I’m going to make a point of getting it now!! God, I love Bette so much…what an incredible legendary one off individual. We will never see the likes of her again that’s for sure!!

I agree with Whitney that Now Voyager was her best. Gorgeous film. I always thought that also. Voyager and Dark Victory. I also adored the Letter and All About Eve.
I think she was most proud of All About Eve as it was her comeback film and she was older and it really cemented her icon status.

I have often watched Dick cavett on TH-cam and remember some of his show with some back in the day this was one of the best I've ever seen I have never seen an actor or actress do a scene and read with the person who is interviewing them I thought they did a great job I loved it just love it I've always loved that if it's movies all the ones I've seen and she was a good actress constant actress I think God bestowed upon her that ultimate gift and how I love her and interviews she's clear she's precise concise and honest there never be another Betty Davis there are things that happen only once in life that's how that comes along sometimes once in life and she was it you'll never find another Betty Davis there could be no copies no matter how you try to imitate her you can't just don't try she was it and I think the movie industry is better for it. Rest in peace Betty
Well I don't think she was robbed of it, because if I'm not mistaking didn't Ann Bancroft get it the Miracle Worker. That was in my opinion SO WELL Deserved.

Thanks for posting this. According to multiple sources, Miriam Hopkins (whom Davis cruelly tears into in this interview on national television) died on October 9, 1972. So this show must have been sometime after that, not 1971 as stated.

In a more perfect world Barry Manilow would have gotten some hazardous duty pay, good on him for being able to hold it all together. That's a real true sign of a professional.
Barry manilow has always been and still one of my singers and song writers, no one has come close maybe with exception of Lionel Richie.
@@donaldcasey3990 I remember when Barry was on American Bandstand and he was playing his new release Mandy. I imagine it was an honor to play piano for Betty Davis and I admire his ability to concentrate so well that it blanks out any noise he may be hearing while playing the piano. No offense but Betty Davis has never been one to belt out a tune and this was proof. Besides I was more into Marlene Dietrich

That style of singing is called “Parlando”. It’s when an actor speak-sings. Rex Harrison used to do it a lot. I actually love it when they do parlando. It’s entertaining and always about the words not the music.

Not at all. Manilow was active since the early 1960s. This is 1974, he's already a superstar that year. He had already been on the Tonight Show playing with Bette Midler.

In a prior Cavett interview with her, he appeared to have a crush on her and she may have sensed it, so I wonder if she chose the song, 'Too Young or Too Old' with him in mind? Anyway, his tacky 'humorous' question, whether she molested the author when he was eight, was way out of bounds, and when he added that he was molested at eight, it just made it weirder. And Bette's body language absolutely revealed her disgust. Not cool, Richard. Keep your Scorpio nature in check, dude.
Good analysis. Cavett often overstepped IMO. As for example with Bacall. He played that crush-on card with her also.
And he wasnt always well prepared. Study your guests history so that your questions arent irritating for them. Parkinson and Osborne were more interesting IMO.
I actually think he pretended to have a crush only. They were very old women and he was young. He was being debonair to them. I do though, think that the truth is moreso that Bette had a crush on him. She seems very taken by him and very ga ga when around him. He was gorgeous and charming after all.

Yes, but this is not about the singing. It's the association (then) in the public's mind with creepy grotesque songs, which started- I think with Baby Jane. "I've written a letter to daddy" is one of best and saddest performances in movies. The voice fits the character

this was 1974 not 1971, and how i know that is he mentioned the show he had the honor of doing with Katharine Hepburn which was in late 73.
Also, Mother Goddam was released in 1974, and The Six Million Dollar Man (promo'd in VO at the end) was 1974.

I love Bette, she was hilarious and some character. She was a great actress BUT she could NOT sing! But she certainly tried and that’s confidence and admirable. ❤

@@RoseMakesItNot so nice. Manilow was already signed as a solo artist and was working with Clive Davis, and Davis was pushing Manilow's career. All that screen time, name drops, and chit-chat was in Manilow's appearance contract signed by his agent and lawyer and Cavett's. In some ways you could consider this that Clive Davis got Bette Davis to promote Manilow on TV!

He interviewed her again in 1977, she was very happy and chatty. About to watch this one now. I'm not sure what year this is from because it says 1971 but when asked whether Miriam Hopkins is alive, she says no but she died not till October 1972, aged 69. She also seems to mention the 1977 interview with Dick, so I am confused. What was this filmed or aired?

Unfortunately, she was unable to realize the obvious -- that smoking ruined her voice.
Yeah unfortunately I think that was the fate of a lot of people of that generation. I used to be a personal chef to Lucille Ball doctor and he said that the same thing happened to her. At the end of her life her voice sounded like it got stuck in a garbage disposal.
@January ..sorry...age was the factor bec singing was never her career, so she never had to keep up w. vocal training. Older Greats who can still sing realllly well usually stay in training.. Lovvvve you Bette!!:)

I have the LP record "Miss Bette Davis Sings" and she sang the majority of the notes in tune...but surely she was no singer!
