  • This video breaks down our open water live bait drifting spread. We use Planer boards and Planer floats to pull live eels and bunker far from the boat. We use the MotorGuide trolling motor to control our drift.
    Raritan Bay. Chesapeake Bay. Delaware Bay. Long Island Sound. Boston Harbor.
    We breakdown a day on the water from soup to nuts.
    How to start fishing, what to look for and how to present multiple baits to cover water and find those GIANT LONER STRIPED BASS!
    We also welcome Brand New Team Old School crew member; Eric Murray to the fold. Many more BIG GIRLS to come my friend!

    THANK YOU!
    GO TO WWW.CATCHTHE FEVER.COM to order the brand new Striper Stealth Striped Bass rods.
    We had a hand in designing these beautiful rods along with some of the best in the industry. The Striper rod is often overlooked even thought it can make a HUGE difference in your fishing success, ESPECIALLY when targeting the BIG GIRLS.
    A super soft tip and rock solid backbone means more hook-ups, less bait-drops and extra power getting big fish to the net.
    The BEST PART?

    Love them rods! They have fit in nicely in every application! I havent had the opportunity to put a big fish on them yet, but super nice to see them handle a big fish!

      TheMurrymaker they are very sweet. The only “unknown” was how strong the backbone would be. The tips are buttery soft (which everyone knows I look for FIRST). I knew they were soft goin in, but wasn’t sure what kind of backbone we would see on a good fish. You can see clearly in this video that the backbone shows up nicely about 1/3 of the way down. EXACTLY where I want it to be. You see the fish go RIGHT TO THE NET when he turns that rod over. Excellent product!

    Mike, can you give me a name, size or link to the glass beads you use.Can you use braid when fishing floats and planers is it best to use mono ..I notice you only use mono. Thanks for your videos!

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
      @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Michael Helupka They are size 3 glass beads. Sorry I don’t have a link handy. I only use braid for live and cut bait and a soft tip rod. You will lose too many fish with braid. The fish drop the bait because they feel the rod tip with braid. The stretch of the mono fools the fish and they won’t drop the bait 👍👍👍

    Going to try the tso floats for fresh water reds at the power plant lakes ...guides there use down riggers but think this could work with head on shrimp or live bait

    Great video mike, which rod would you pair with a boss valiant 300 for chunking/live lining stripers? I’m between the new valiant rod, phenix and or black hole

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
      @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those rods are very nice, but I haven’t seen one with a soft enough tip. Stiff tips are no good for “rod holder striking” fish. They drop the bait quick when they feel that tip. Wait for the Striper Stealth Medium action. They will be less than half the price of a Phenix.

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
      @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      In this video I used Palomar knots to the swivels, but when attaching braid to mono or Fluoro I love the FG knot. It slides thru the guides like butter.

      We were skirting the edges of the channels avoiding the deep water. Fishing the shallow contours near the river mouths. Every fish came from less than 20 feet of water. The 38 lber hooked up in 18 feet.

    Great Video , may I ask why the use of the planner boards with eels I generally fish eels with good results with some of the more traditional methods, But curious if they may be a good fit for me. What are the main situations you use them in , - Benefits Thanks in Advance

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS

      Brian burgess We use Planers a lot in freshwater to get the baits up into the shallow water without spooking big fish. We catch some of our biggest fish in less than 3 feet of water in cold months where the big bass can swim pretty much anywhere. We started doing this at the a chesapeake bay in December many years ago as a way to cover as much water as possible. We found that the biggest fish came off of the surface or at least the top 5-10 feet. We would never mark these fish on the sonar but the sand eels would be everywhere. We rarely use any weight at all but sometimes add a few split shots. It’s a great way to present a live bait AWAY from the boat to target bigger fish that are in very small groups and not large schools. We rarely have doubles. These boards and floats let us cover huge amounts of water while still keeping the bait near the surface. A trolling motor is great for this, but a good breeze can also work. A boat with a top will drift faster than the boards or floats. You can steer with the outboard with the motor not running. Some guys leave the motor running and bump it in and out of gear with a full spread of boards and floats. Try using 2 boards and 2 TOS planer floats and see how it goes. Add more lines as you get more comfortable.
