I like the way you give the fish time to recover, I see so may guys just throw the fish back in the water without taking the proper steps to release it healthy. It shows you have a great respect for the fish and the sport! Well done!
Just found your channel, and this is the second video of yours I’ve watched. Thank you for explaining the spread, current and speed details. Much respect for how you interacted with your fishing partner and also how you treated the fish. 👍🏻👍🏻
WOW!!! love itlove the planer boards and floats.i havent seen them used out here in cali. but thats good instruction if i ever get a chance to use them.
I just got a set of planer boards just moved to Virginia from Jersey gonna go out on the Chesapeake for a couple days with some eels and see what I can do
Sure. I’m working on a video that shows every single thing that we do from soup to nuts on a day trip. Please subscribe so you don’t miss it. Will probably still be a few weeks. Thanks brother!
Gary Potter They work fine for me. I have a feeling that they work better with the heavier line we use. The only time I’ve heard guys complain was when they used 8 -10lb test. Here ya go amzn.to/2XRr9Mm
I am going to try planer boards for the first time this winter. Can you tell me the boards you guys are using again? Also, will these work for artificial lures also?
Thanks brother!! I designed the rail, Joey Scruggs makes them. His cell is in the description. I use CeSmith larger size adjustable rod holders. They are also in the description. thanks brother!!
Mike Smedley Hi Mike. Sorry to be a pain in the ass, but I checked the description multiple times and I can’t find a reference to Joey. Apologize if I missed it. And thanks for getting back to me. Have you done any videos on trolling and determining the depths of your lures with various methods?
How do you recommend reviving a summer caught fish in a freshwater lake in the summer time when water temps get around 85 degrees. Can a striper survive a catch and release in those conditions? Really enjoy the videos and tips.
Thanks brother!! I’m glad you like the videos. I do believe that they can survive a bit more than what I have read out there. We do a head first torpedo straight down. No revival at all. They usually only come up from 25-40 feet deep so it’s not unthinkable to believe that a properly released won’t survive. There is a CHANCE that it will die, but it will DEFINITELY die in the cooler. 😉. This video shows a situation like you are talking about. th-cam.com/video/KAWKO9XYEcQ/w-d-xo.html
Thanks for the reply man. What I’ve read and heard is more about the water temp than the depth for striped bass mortality. Just wanted your opinion. I appreciate it.
Hey Mike I’ve already bought two CTF medium 7’6” rods, is there so much of a noticeable difference between the current CTF mediums and the new Striper Stealth medium that’s worthy of an additional purchase ? Great vids, I’m a fan !
Innkeeper S These new rods are COMPLETELY different from the ground up. The blanks are specifically designed to have very soft tips with strong backbone further down the rid for a parabolic bend. The reel seats are lighter yet stronger, rods lock down much better and won’t loosen. The gimbal butts are rounded so they won’t cut your belly. The guides are smaller, lighter with no inserts to pop out. The rod has impressive lightness and balance. I have been working with them for a while on this. I’m on the second set of prototypes and the final rods are fantastic. For $80 they are insane. 👍👍 I will have a feature video on them up very soon. I’m glad you like the videos!! Thanks brother!
Hey just make sure that I’m seeing this right the rod closest to the bow is your closest in rod and the rod closest to the stern would be the planer that is furthest out( away from the boat) .Is that correct?
Yes sir. That’s the easiest way to keep the widest spread. You will have to walk the rod that gets hit to the stern at strike so it can be tricky when a front rod gets hit for the first few times until you get used to it. Some people reverse the spread to counter that, but you can’t get the long board out as far if it’s the front position because the line bows in the water and runs into the rear boards.
@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS awesome! Thanks for the info! When setting up like that do you put out the longest planer near the stern first? Also which planer do you typically run the longest(from planer to bait )or deepest? Thanks for again for the help!
Mike grew up on long island fishing as a kid. 65 now so was a different world as far as gear. been away from it for some 35 years as i adopted 3 kids and just wasn't any time to startin over again. rods look great and thinking about getting two for me qnd my bride who loves to fish. question: fishing from my boat, using live bunker like I did some 50 years ago to catch blues and stripers. mostly trolling really slow. which rod would you recommend for this application and better yet what reel would you recommend? thanks for your imput.
Glad to hear you’re back brother!! I personally LOVE the Striper Stealth MH for EVERYTHING. They have heavy backbone yet a VERY soft tip. They are PERFECT for live and cut Bunker and can troll 40 oz Chute/Mojos as well. I think you will really like them. Especially compared to the much heavier bulkier feeling rods from 35 years ago. Let me know how you like them!!! Thanks for the comment.
andy schlau Yep. Sorry. The best reel by ALOT if you’re breaking the $200 Mark is the Accurate Fury. It has all the same materials and bearings as the $550 reels in the same size, but has a standard oversized drag. You want the 400 regular. amzn.to/2XTvZZK
There are several small hotels along the Eastern Shore. We use different ones depending on which ramp we use. One is Sunset resorts near the CBBT bridge. There are some good ones next to Chris bait and tackle. Unfortunately I don’t remember the names, I just know where they are. They are all up and down the main drag rt 13.
@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS Thanks for the quick reply. I fish in the Montauk area and don't get much exposure to trolling. Why do you use planer boards over an alternative method when trolling?
Well this is very slow moving. I call It strolling. We move as slow as .1 mph. Just fast enough to keep the lines right to be honest. More of a controlled drift. It’s excellent during slack tides. We did this up in Boston with Mackerel and it killed!! You would definitely do well up there with this method. Check out some of my freshwater and Chesapeake videos. We use this method most in those.
@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERSThanks! Haha i already have about 10 tabs open with numerous videos of yours i plan to watch right now as a procrastinate from studying for finals. What function do the planer boards actually provide? Are they just for spacing?
mike jolly The reels are Accurate Valiant 400. BV-2. The rods are the new Striper Stealth Rods from Catch the Fever. I had a hand in designing them. They will be available in a month or so. Very reasonable prices. The line is Berkley Pro-Spec 30 lb blue. The leaders are 25-40lb Seagar Fluorocarbon. Thanks for the comment brother!!
