Thanks a lot!!! For the video!! Not only saved me $900 (quoted on dealer) but also save me a week without a car = no work! I had previously bought a small tool kit from Amazon to remove car parts and was helpful. I used contact cleaner instead of the DW40 and that did it for me!
My wife has been telling Honda for the past year her start stop button was going bad. They kept saying it was her key fob, thank you for making this video, was able to finally fix it for her without those crooks at Honda.
This worked for me too! 2017 Honda HR-V and was living with the orange light icon on my dash for about a year. Last week or so was having difficulties getting to car to start. Swapped batteries in the key fob twice. Found this video and got the contact cleaner like folks in the comments had suggested, followed your instructions and now the light is gone on the dash and car starts immediately. I really appreciate you making this video and sharing your knowledge!
I had a similar problem with a 2015 Honda Civic. Push start engine button dash lit up, single click sound and the engine wouldn't start. I checked fuses and relays and they were in good working condition. The mechanic recommended switching out the battery and alternator. It worked for a couple weeks and I got back to square one. I cleaned the push engine button and worked for a couple days then same issue. I checked the brake switch underneath the dash and noticed the push pin was not working correctly. Autozone part only $12.99 Duralast Stoplight Switch SW9720. So far no issues. My last resort is the starter. Thanks for uploading the video.
I just had the same problem, it was the brake light switch. I took the switch apart and on the inside there were 4 pins. One of the pins was bent further up than the other 3, so all I had to do was bend it back to try and match how the other pins were bent. After that all was good and the car would start like normal. Still, gonna buy a replacement piece.
I have a similar situation just happen today on a 2015 civic I’ve only had for 5 weeks and drove very little. All of a sudden the door won’t unlock/lock via the key FOB, and when I tried to start the vehicle nothing happened. No sound no lights, nothing.
Just did it!!!! My HRV wasn't starting for like 3 weeks now, sometimes it would take me to press the button 30-40 times to start it! watched this video, did everything step by step, used a CRC electrical contact cleaner - car starts from the first try and light is gone! Thanks for this video man what an amazing save that was!

Totally worked, thanks brotha. I'm not very electronic literate so I was a little weary of putting wd-40 on the circuit board but I just took a leap of faith and wouldn't you know the car started right up and the little key light is gone. Life saver.
Keep in mind, this was temporary fix. Couple weeks ago I had to change out the starter unit as the car would not start at all with the old faulty unit.
You are a rock star! Completely saved me a costly replacement. I used WD-40 electric contact cleaner and it worked great with no residue. Thanks a bunch.
Those metal pins aren't actually the culprit FYI. Pull out the little motherboard and you will see 2 little copper circle "pads" use a q-tip and rubbing alcohol to clean that surface as well as the little rubber pad that has 2 more copper pads. How it works is once the push to start button is pressed the contact points on the rubber pad touch the contact pads on the motherboard completing the circuit. This then tells the cars computer to turn on or off based on its current status.
after ordering a failed replacement from Amazon, I just sprayed the electrical plug contacts (on the back of switch) with electrical cleaner spray on my old start switch and IT WORKS!!!!! I returned the Amazon knock-off garbage for a full refund.
I didn’t have anything to pry it open, although was scared to break its clips. Through frustration at the difficulties I depressed the button and sprayed WD40 into its housing, hoping it would seep in and down through the mechanism and onto any contacts. I figured that the diagonal angle of the button situated in the dash would help the liquid trickle down. IT WORKED! So pleased. Fingers and everything crossed that it continues!!!
