Great video. You guys should do a video of the first Indochina war and the events that led up to that. I think it adds context in the same way WWI adds a kind of understanding towards why WWII happened. We don't talk about things like Ho Chi Minh being a Comintern agent, or how he allowed the French to return their colonial control to Indochina with the 1946 Franco Vietnam agreement.
I was actually just reading a memorandum written on May 9th, 1951, by Jean Letourneau who was the Minister for the Associated States. It was confirming the troop count for the French Expeditionary Force in Indochina. I noticed it said 56,000 Indochinese troops were fighting for the French with another 42,000 "Native Auxiliaries" I found this interesting that a large amount of Vietnamese, Cambodians, and Laotians were fighting for the French considering I have always been under the impression that the war was about removing them. As I read more and more into it, it seems that the French had already signed legislation that put Vietnam on the path towards independence and Ho Chi Minh was just upset that the government wasn't going to be communist so he launched a communist uprising from China under the guise of "Independence"

      The argument is extremely unconvincing
1946 Franco Vietnam agreement .France only wants to grant some limited autonomy, but the economy, politics and military must still be under French control. This is neo-colonialism.
      This is an example th-cam.com/video/36vYRkVYeVw/w-d-xo.html
In 1949, the French established a puppet government state of vietnam led by bao dai with the above conditions. However, the country was still only partially autonomous, with France initially retaining effective control of the army and foreign relations. Bảo Đại himself stated in 1950: "What they call a Bảo Đại solution turned out to be just a French solution... the situation in Indochina is getting worse every day".
In 1946 south china still control by Kuomintang .
After World War II, Kuomintang army go to north of the 13th parallel.British army go to south of the 13th parallel(including the French army in the British army). In March 1946, a preliminary accord signed between the French and Ho Chi Minh which acknowledged the DRV as a free state within an Indochinese Federation in a “French Union” and allowed a limited number of French troops within its borders to replace the Chinese forces which started gradually returning to China.Mainly because vietminh cannot fight both france and kuomintang

Not sure if I'd call myself a revisionist, but I believe almost any war we fight is "winnable." I just don't think any of these kinds of wars we fight recently are worth the high price it would cost. There must have been a better way.

It could be that in the highest levels of power the goal is the war it self, not who wins it.

Yes by using nuclear weapons against countries that do not have them! Short of that US tried everything in Vietnam, including chemical warfare, and was defeated.

One of the reasons for the end of the Vietnam war was the revolt of the combat troops. "Fragging" devastates a fighting force.

    *** Battle of Vi Xuyen
    Which brother is far away?
Sharing the same parents, the same family
Love each other like hands and feet
Brothers and sisters in harmony and happiness.
The bravery and heroism of the army and people of Ha Tuyen province, as well as the legitimacy of Vietnam in the fight to protect the northern border of the Fatherland, will forever be engraved in history.
"Living on stone, dying petrified, becoming immortal" by Nguyen Viet Ninh, became the motto of Vi Xuyen soldier's life and battle. The story of heroic martyr Le Tran Man, former medic of Division 356 is equally heroic. Man was the one who volunteered to bring the country's flag to the top of E5, the highest point of the 685 peak to mark the country's sovereignty, to replace the flag that the Chinese army had planted. A round of artillery shelling over the peak made him gone forever, flesh and bones merged into the mother's earth, so far the remains have not been found. May your spirit rest in eternal peace in the heart of Mother Earth.
The entire Vi Xuyen front at that time spread over 20 km2, became a land of fire with fierce places such as minced meat hill, soul calling waterfall, century lime kiln, death crossroads. Peak 685 was also lowered by nearly 3m due to the destructive power of thousands of shells. More than 5000 officers and soldiers heroically sacrificed, of which there are still 3000 martyrs scattered throughout the battlefield of Vi Xuyen. Chinese artillery is many times stronger than B52, there are thousands of dead Vietnamese mixed into the ground. Their bodies were never found.
Most of the martyrs resting here are in their 18s and 20s. The youngest soldier who died at the Vi Xuyen front at that time was the one who wrote a volunteer application when he was 16 years old. The name "Citadel of the twenties" was given to the officers and soldiers here.
Every year, July 12 is considered the anniversary of the death of Vi Xuyen, please light a candle at the Vi Xuyen National Martyrs Cemetery to remember, thank and pay respects to you. May the souls of the martyrs rest in peace, you will forever be immortal monuments in the hearts of the Vietnamese people.
Other equipment that helps the Chinese Artillery include Night Vision and target-finding radar. This allowed the Chinese to locate PAVN soldiers hiding or resting in the dark as cover and shelling their positions.
PAVN commanders called off the attack due to heavy casualties and lack of ammunition. China occupied 29 points in Vietnamese territory, including Hills 1509 and 772 to the west of the Lo River, as well as Hills 1250 and 1030 and Mount Si-La-Ca to the east. Along the 11-kilometer border, China's deepest inroads are at Hills 685 and 468 located about 2 kilometers to the south.
China officially withdrew its troops from Laoshan and Zheyinshan after the normalization of relations between China and Vietnam on September 4, 1991. China was clearly the winner, having achieved all the objectives. mine.
$$$ Stop building Ho Chi Minh statue, use money wisely to protect Vietnam.

I remember Vietnam and the U.S. used the "Domino" theory as justification. Do a search for Golf Courses in Vietnam. Maybe the U.S. should have just built the golf courses, instead of costing millions of deaths and billions of dollars? "Cui Bono" (for whose benefit) is this conflict?

*** Battle of Vi Xuyen Judgment
A wise bird is wise in its flock, and a wild bird in a flock is also foolish.
The Sino-Vietnamese border conflict of 1979-1990 can be seen as the crucible from which the modern PLA was born, reformed from the army that had lazily attacked Vietnam in 1979.
Precise military firepower is considered one of the main reasons for China's successful defense. The PLA imported Cymbeline radar from the UK that allowed it to locate ARVN artillery.
Chinese artillery fire even at night, due to the deployment of new Chinese night vision devices to the front lines.
The experience gained after a Vietnamese commando unit destroyed a counter-reaction radar in 1984 was later used by the Chinese to help form their own special operations forces.
The fire tests in the Vi Xuyen area have allowed China to develop a new forward-thinking leadership team. New technologies and organizational structures were also tested and reformed, and combat experience gained leading to the creation of Chinese special forces. In the words of a Chinese general, border conflicts "allowed him to achieve his dream of waging modern warfare by modern methods".
Vietnam veterans recall being shelled by Chinese artillery even at night, due to the deployment of new Chinese night vision devices to the front lines. In addition, China's logistics have reached new levels of efficiency. One of the most important factors leading to the PLA's success is the logistics system. This system allowed to transport more than 120,000 shells to the front line. As a result, PLA artillery units can fire at enemy positions without having to worry about running out of ammunition. Although the PAVN also relied heavily on artillery, they did not have this system leading to ammunition shortages.
After a Vietnamese unit of Dak Cong commando destroyed a PLA counter-response radar in 1984, Deng Xiaoping asked the PLA General Staff to create similar capabilities. All Chinese military regions were ordered to organize reconnaissance brigades, which were then rotated throughout the Laoshan area. Fifteen reconnaissance brigades were formed, three to five of which were deployed to the area at any given time. These brigades were very active in raiding the rear areas, and the experience gained from them was later used by the PLA to help form its own special operations forces.
Militarily, China sees border conflicts as a way to evolve the PLA from an outdated fighting force into a modern one, by testing new doctrines and equipment at the border.
