HiFiMan Sundara Closed Back are more different than I imagined. Lets look inside

  • If you want to WIN a pair of these, get subbed as we will be creating a one off pair and giving them away in the next video about them.
    HiFiMan were kind enough to send me some of these to take a look at. I have not got my hands on any closed backed planar headphones before so it was really interesting seeing how HiFiMan tackled creating a closed version of the very popular sundara.
    I will be shooting a few videos about them over the next few weeks and will have a go at tweaking the sound on them. We will also be giving one away and if you don't win those we will be raffling off a pair custom painted by swarez art for charity in another video

    Love my Sundara's and would love a pair of closed back, but I'm a huge stickler for wood finishes on my cans. I hope they release these with a basic black housing at some point in the future.
    Side note, I'd been sitting on my HD600 copper mass loading mod for months -- not sure why -- and finally decided to take them apart and give the mod a try, and can't gush about them enough. Brought the headphones to life and brought the performance closer to my tastes while still retaining all the qualities that I love about the HD600. You guy's are legends and will be my new go-to for mods and cables moving forward.

    Closed back Sundara has been peaking my interest lately, how is the isolation compared to something like a HD280? Would be fun to daily drive some planars, also how is the build quality compared to regular Sundara? I've seen lots of horror stories about Hifimans breaking

    • @CustomCans
      @CustomCans  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The isolation is surprisingly good - probably not quite as good as the HD280 but close - the clamping force is a lot less than the HD280 so your head does not get squeezed as much. I have had 3 pairs apart now and they seem well made. The holes on the sides of the earcup that the headband attaches to have brass inserts to strengthen them, the wood seems to be glued and nailed to the rest of the housing. I am pretty certain they would survive most use cases

    The original Sundaras don't have stealth magnets, which tend to have an effect on the bass presence. Hifiman has been relaunching their earlier headphones with stealth magnets (Arya, Ananada, etc.), and I think the original Sundaras are next in line for the stealth magnet treatment. The sales price of the original Sundara has been slashed, most likely to clear inventory ahead of the next launch. I'm guessing Hifiman released a stealth magnet version of a closed back first so that the Sundara SE wouldn't cannibalize their Edition XS sales.

    • @vik8023
      @vik8023 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Oooh, I absolute love my sundaras, how substantial would a stealth magnet upgrade be ? I am not really clear on exactly what they provide.

    • @bla_ank
      @bla_ank 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@vik8023 They are supposed to reduce distortion. In practice, Hifiman headphones that have been reworked to include stealth magnets tend to have a greater sense of body and warmth. Some people prefer the thinner, airier sound of the older versions, so I can't say that it will be a definite upgrade for you; it's taste dependent
      Maybe I'm wrong, but I've noticed that Hifiman's stealth magnet headphones have drivers with magnets of varying sizes and strengths, just like the driver that we see here. Conversely, the older ones have a uniform array of magnets. This structure seems to be part of the stealth magnet implementation. I've seen this pattern on the Susvara, Arya Stealth, Edition Xs and now the Sundara Closed

    i wanna see that idea you had with playing with the he400se magnets. you should try retuning the closed back sundaras to add a bit of treble to the mix. maybe play with the foam on the front. id still be pretty interested if you can modify the sundaras to make them closed backs, considering the closed back version are completely different headphones.

    • @CustomCans
      @CustomCans  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I will be doing a new HE400 series video in a few weeks. I suspect that making the sundaras closed may be very tricky. By the looks of it, they had to add the more powerful magnets to the driver to help them work in a closed enclosure - the driver probably needs more power as it has to pressurise the air inside the earcup rather than moving freely - as the sundaras only have magnets on one side it may not work well. I will have a play though.

    The sundara closed back drivers are from the He R10 planar with slight changes to the magnets. There have been no 'real' new releases from hifiman recently, most of the new models they have released are just a jumble of different existing models into one 'new' product or just swapping out some of the neodymium magnets to a cheaper "edged ferrite magnets" aka their so called budget "stealth magnets" and call it a day. To me it's just them being lazy and cutting costs.

    • @CustomCans
      @CustomCans  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      That is pretty normal and makes a lot of sense from a business point of view. A bit like the Sennheiser HD580, HD600, HD650 and HD6xx are all based on the same headphones with subtle tweaks. I know a lot of people who purchased all 4 of them, getting sennheiser 4 sales with very little development needed. Then there are the HD58X, HD660 and others that share most of the parts with them.
      R&D is really expensive and time consuming so you need to squeeze everything you can out of the range to keep costs down for customers
