  • I really liked a lot of things about the HiFiMan Sundara closed but there is definitely room for improvement. In this video, I do some initial testing to see how Hifiman tuned them and see what changes I can make.

    I've only modded cheap headphones. But it's cool to see that even more costly ones can be improved.

    A lot of budget closed backs put a lot of dampening material behind the driver to get a more detailed sound. When looking into higher end gear, I was surprised to see that this wasn't the case. Fortunately it's quite easy to just put some foam behind the driver (especially on planar magnetics).

    • @CustomCans
      @CustomCans  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeh, We have been experimenting with different shapes and density of foam so we may have a ready made insert available for them soon.

    Amazing to see how flat you can get them with just some foam! I wonder what kind of different sound styles you could give them with different types of wood for the outer cup.

    • @CustomCans
      @CustomCans  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I am going to have to a lot of listening and tweaking over the next few weeks. I suspect different woods, would be a much more subtle change but if I can convince the team to buy me a lathe then I may give that a go as well ;)

    If only it was possible to EQ headphones with some applications lol. But seriously tho, why not EQing them instead of risking all the hardware?

    • @hartyewh1
      @hartyewh1 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They sound so bad that I assume there are standing waves or something happening past the transducer and EQ can't fix that.

    • @CustomCans
      @CustomCans  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Why not stay in the plane rather than sky diving ;) ... But, seriously, EQing is much safer and can often give good results. There are some things that can not be fixed with EQing but to be honest, I just get more of a sense of achievement when I mod something.

    Can you explain the designs and reasoning behind the baffle designs of various open and closed back headphones?

    Did you ever find out, how the wooden back plates can be removed from the plastic frame. The are no screws but small quadratic shaped things.

  • @mmmlll9359
    @mmmlll9359 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Maybe a small hole in the wood cover, just to release the air pressure inside. Of course, the hole in a not so visible place, like in the lower area, under.

    Hi,love the video's.Im currently using beyerdynamic T5 3rd Gen headphones (I prefer closed back) I'm looking to move up so to speak.I'm not one for dongle DACs or Amps Just simple plug into my Dap and play.Any suggestions from the people that know,P.S love the cables I have two sets.

    • @CustomCans
      @CustomCans  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am not an expert on DACs and DAPs but going from single ended to a balanced connection will normally improve things a little if your DAP has a balanced out. Changing earpads can also have quite a big effect on sound. Unfortunately I have not played with the 3rd gen T5 so don't have any experience
