    You are right Nigel , I feel that many young people today suffer from sensory overload , there is so much virtual noise out there which is hard to deal with and to escape from .
    It doesn’t surprise me that you once were a Samaritan , I find your talks very therapeutic and mind opening , I’m so glad I found you ✌🏽&❤
    P.s what a delightful little musical interlude with Molly

      Thanks Nigel. It went well. I have booked the next batch of shifts in order to get my ‘P’ status as soon as I can. I’m not a million miles from your neck of the woods in the North West (similar age bracket too). I don’t want to publish too much by way of public comments but I did feel like sharing something with you after your video. Cheers for now. Lee

      Thank you. I don’t often talk about Samaritans. Not many people know I was one. I think a lot of people are wary of becoming a Samaritan for emotional reasons, but I found it so rewarding. I loved every minute of it. 😊

    Thank you for educating me…. I always thought the Samaritans was for people who were planning to take their own lives. The training sounds amazing. What a great life skill.
    I have a question . Following your transition into sitting into that lovely car, where did you put Molly?? Is she sitting on the seat next to you in the or did you put her in the boot? 🤔

  • @DennisFreeland
    @DennisFreeland 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Well said -especially the self reflection at the end. Not much has changed the ethos remains the same and I certainly recognise the training as you described it. Empathy non-judgement and an acceptance of "what is" are important qualities even when you recognise that the caller has an intention to take their own life either then or at some point.

    Great topic Nigel. You reminded me of when I used to the Allan Beswick phone in on radio lancashire not too long ago. Now and then Allan would take a call from someone who was really struggling mentally. The way he dealt with the situation was amazing. He really was patient and understanding. I would imagine very similar to yourself and the fabulous service that the samaritans provide. A credit to you 😊

    I once wrote to a Abbot of a monastery and told him my troubles. I think I was hoping I could stay there for a few days to have a bit of peace. The reply was very nice but sadly not much help.

      Ha! Look, I don’t want to diss on most religious retreats (I’m being charitable here)
      But I was pretty high up in Samaritans, and most of my productive time was taken up with trying to placate religious ideologies.
      Samaritans has nothing to do with religion.
      I’ve found peace in lifestyle that waves a smile at Buddha whilst moving happily through today’s world.

      @@geoff2212 that would not have happened had I been on the end of the phone.sorry about that. Empathy is an amorphous thing, we become the charitable empathetic paragon of virtue. No! We just have empathy, just like everyone else.

      @@primalengland No problem I hold no one responsible. People can only help if you really want them too. Over many years I came to realise that there is only one person that can help and make a difference and that's yourself doesn't matter how many people try there's really only you that can make that change.

    Hi Nigel...you posed a very interesting point of view on the cause of depression. Maybe the levels of depression were worse prior to the advent of the internet, cell phones, a computer laptops and tablets. Now that we live in the instant information age, one cannot assume that depression is actually worse nowadays. Definitely the mandatory closing of schools, playgrounds, and many public places, and the fear of dying during the pandemic had its share of causing depression among the youth and the elderly. Definitely the 21st century lacks the personal interactions that we of the 20th century enjoyed. Cyberspace reality has become the new way of life; I wonder if AI will make it worse.

    • @primalengland
      @primalengland  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The argument that depression and mental illness was always here, but less in the public psychi is something I would like to dispute.
      My father attempted suicide at 49 and was successful in his endeavours at 50.
      I was told to pull my breeches up and get a grip.
      I will support mental illness, but I will not garner it the priority it demands.

    • @CARACAS1
      @CARACAS1 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I know you don't want sympathy, but how terrible that you had to experience such a fatal tragedy. Definitely, mental illness had a different public perception when you were a young adult than it does nowadays. Public health is now becoming more important as a matter of public policy. I assume that post-war England had to deal with high levels of depression among its military personnel and citizens. Maybe, I don't really know, it wasn't given the proper importance by the medical authorities.
