And the scenery on yours and Mollys' walks make me envious (just a little). It's so beautiful and wild. I've tried living a simple life for many years now, but got serious when I retired in 2018 at 76. Now it's me and my 3 dogs on my little piece of Texas, living our best lives. I call it Hippy Hermit Hobbit House and there's a chain and lock on my gate! LOL I'm just a little bit of a recluse too! Merry Christmas to your and precious Molly. With our teens every school holiday day could be a fry up day! 😊Christmas holidays are just made for sleeping late and coming down to beans and toast and 🥓 and eggs and marmelade. Then tea and Christmas cookies - and a slice of stollen here in Germany! - games, chilling with grandma and a relaxed dinner! Isn't late breakfast, what we all really, really want! I spend many Christmas Days alone, too. It’s just as nice. She has just asked me to take my backgammon on Christmas Day. This could be the end of a beautiful friendship. Our backgammon skills are similar, so it gets very competitive. 😊❤️

I’m buying most of the traditional dinner for 8 of us + 2 small kids. The kids will do all the cooking. We’ll eat of mismatched plates, sat on a mix of dining chairs & garden furniture. Not flash but but we’ll have fun and I’ll enjoy having my feet up when they’re all gone, with a glass of baileys.
You made me think back to when I was a child and we always had Christmas at my Aunt’s, because they had more room and it was a big family occasion. We sat on all sorts of mismatched chairs, and extended the table with a card table for us kids. 😊
And in years to come they will all have a giggle about how high or low they were sat at the table and about who had the fanciest or most plain plate or glass while reminiscing about how those were the best Christmases ever and how much fun they had and what fond memories they have of them. I know this because this sounds like some of the Christmas days we had when young. Good food, good company and how happy we were - I couldn't tell you what presents I received those years but I remember which relatives/family friends were there and what we laughed about and what stories/memories flowed once the drinks were handed around 😊

We used to do a big, busy Christmas because we were young parents with a bunch of kids. I wish someone had shown us a better way to celebrate. How much time and money we wasted on buying, buying and buying as part of the holidays. Life is so much simpler now that we no longer see Christmas as a time of giving material things.
I am also looking forward to Xmas day. I will be at my friend’s house, he cooks the side dishes & I cook the turkey & make the sage and onion stuffing. We will have a couple of bottles of wine & enjoy each others company while listening to some background music. On Boxing Day it is my birthday! Hello Nigel. No matter what my mood your videos always make me feel better! My husband and I live far enough away from our families that we can't meet for Christmas and we're happy to just be with each other. You're quite right about Christmas family rows. Apparently the police have a very busy time on Christmas day as they're called out to one domestic incident after another! Last year we ordered a turkey from a farm which had to be delivered and the delivery driver stole it and forged my signature! This year we've wised up and are picking one up from M and S Your Christmas day sounds like it will be wonderful. Abigail's party...........a Mike Leigh classic! God Bless Nigel.
We’re doing our Christmas dinner shop at M&S. Decent stuff. I don’t do crowds anyway. I have a hearing problem brought on by years of working on drilling rigs. I can’t hear someone next to me, but can hear a conversation across a large room. It’s weird. I hate all the false smiles and small talk. Give me a mince pie, a dog and a woodland walk any day.

As ever, Nigel, you speak for me - and so many others, I expect. Christmas here in Crete is low key whereas Easter is the big festival. So we are spared the whole farce and commercialisation of the UK. Every Christmas morning we go to the village cafe bar for coffee or wine with our friends and then home for a quiet meal. Usually it's fish. We open a bottle and watch a favourite film ( 'In Bruges' this year, 'Withnail and I' was last year's fave) and eat whatever we like. Bliss! If it's sunny, we'll go the beach on Boxing Day and read, sitting in our deckchairs or go for a walk. It may be boring to some people but it suits us. And yes, Abigail's Party - we still have the dvd! Horrendous! Have a very happy time with your friend and the dogs. Hugs!

Me and my husband are having our first Christmas with just the 2 of us. Our daughter is going to her in laws so our house will be very quiet and we can just do what we want, really looking forward to it xxxx
I don’t think the ‘family unit’ is as important as it was a couple of generations ago, so all getting together for one hectic day can be a recipe for disruption.
Once upon a time, my sister and I used to say wryly to one another, "Happy Hellidays!!!" haha. I found the selfie I sent to my family in December 2020 when no one could get together - I had a big Santa Hat on my head and quite a big smile on my face 😂
I don't celebrate x-mas, but I think it's a nice time. I spend it with my parents and alone and I love to watch old x-mas feel good movies and just relax and eat tasty food. Pure bliss. I also know that for some it's a very challenging time due to expectations/loneliness. Your x-mas plan sounds great. I hope you'll enjoy it dear Nigel 🙏

I’ve spent the last 15 Christmases alone. I’ve now got into a routine of having every other year with my friend, so she can visit distant relatives every couple of years. We still get together over the Christmas period. I quite like alternating it. My two close friends died quite a few years ago, and it’s nice to have found a new ‘best friend’ this late in life. 😊

Everyone does Christmas differently I find, there’s no right way or wrong way. I hosted for years, it was wonderful, everyone chips in with the work. This year as circumstances have changed we are going to my daughters and I will take my Christmas apron and homemade praline biscotti, plus a bottle or two, although nothing is expected. Sharing and caring, the essence of Christmas. Merry Christmas everyone, however you choose to spend it.
One thing about getting old is that you have done every iteration along the way. I was once dragged out to have Christmas dinner in a restaurant once. That didn’t work for me, but I love Christmas, so it all works for me. I have a hearing problem because I worked on heavy machinery for years, so I can’t hear conversations unless they are one on one, which is fine, because I like one on one. 😊
Our kids request cheese fondue🫕 every year on Cristmas Eve after church ! Not even an expensive homemade, but the cheap baggies from the supermarket! Best thing is sitting together and having a good time! Board games after that! Presents will be practical, too! Instead of an expensive LEGO set our son asked for some inexpensive IKEA to organize his computer stuff! Puzzling THAT together should be just as satisfying and much fun!😂 And the daughter needs a new sensibly-priced mobile, but wants us to get it next year when they get cheaper!🎉 Boxing Day tradition is pasta and a jar of tomato sauce, because - when they were little - the kids wanted us to play with them and their new games! Brother in law and his wife will only be with us on the third day of Christmas - that's when the good food is served! But I already pre-cooked that by and by during Advent, it is easily reheatable deer goulash, so no stress, good talks and a glass of wine!🍷 It is insane, what people carry home, only because of this one day! All these expensive little packets of special sauce, of ready-made fancy meals, of ready-made exclusive desserts! And then it's a mountain of packaging in the bin and a bit of soggy salmon en croute, a runny sauce, and a dried up chocolate mousse! All washed down with expensive wines that no one really likes and sweet champagne that leaves us with a headache! You are doing it right! Keep it simple! Actually, many years ago I saw a short (I think TH-cam) where an older widow lady was explaining that all her kids and grandkids wanted to come to her for Christmas because they wanted to eat Mum's cooking. However, she couldn't afford the expense so she did ask the kids to pay their share. I remember thinking that perhaps if she put away a little bit every week, she wouldn't have to ask them. I also thought that it would have been nice of the kids to offer rather than having to be asked. There's nowt so queer as folk! Anyway - you've got yours sorted! Have a wonderful Christmas. I understand what you are saying, Ruth, but today I was listening to someone talking about the WASPI women, and saying that they all had the information if they had only gone on social media, and they should have just prepared and saved more pension. I’ve been in a position where there is not enough for a contingency plan. Saving for a rainy day is now a very middle class aspiration. I’m having a meal at my mum’s on Christmas Eve because my brother is spending Christmas Day with his daughter, my beautiful niece, so they are coming down from North Yorkshire. I’m doing the cheese, the wine and the mince pies. I think the days of traditional Christmas Days are gone. The cost dictates that it takes on a whole different dynamic. It’s now a family compromise, rather than a family celebration. That’s was a bit of a waffle, wasn’t it. 😊❤️

On the subject of charging guests to your home for food at christmas? Are those people insane?! In my younger days when my family members used to come together at christmas (aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents etc), no body arrived empty handed. Everyone cooked and brought something with them for the table. Ended with enough food to feed an army. If you state that you'll provide everything.. You foot the bill and you foot the bill gracefully.
Absolutely! If you’re happy to invite people to your home on the understanding that you will cater, then it’s understood that you’re a nice person. If everyone turns up with a dish, it’s understood that you are all nice people. 😊

Day after Christmas Day was a day off for the servants who had worked in the great halls to look after the Lords and Ladies. The Gentry would give the servants gifts (in boxes.) Now we just go on Amazon. 😊❤️
I grew up watching keeping up appearances and seeing misses bucket 🪣 (pronounced 💐) flaunt and being a menace and it subconsciously taught me not to be like that lol but strangely that's what everyone has turned into. It's sad but hopefully we'll all have a come too moment and all become a little more kind and humble and just ignore all the bs.

This year I have chosen to stay at home on my own and eat and drink as normal with one or two treats to mark the occasion. Looking forward to it! 😊

Hello Nigel. No matter what my mood your videos always make me feel better! My husband and I live far enough away from our families that we can't meet for Christmas and we're happy to just be with each other. You're quite right about Christmas family rows. Apparently the police have a very busy time on Christmas day as they're called out to one domestic incident after another! Last year we ordered a turkey from a farm which had to be delivered and the delivery driver stole it and forged my signature! We’re doing our Christmas dinner shop at M&S. Decent stuff. I don’t do crowds anyway. I have a hearing problem brought on by years of working on drilling rigs. I can’t hear someone next to me, but can hear a conversation across a large room. It’s weird. I hate all the false smiles and small talk. Give me a mince pie, a dog and a woodland walk any day.
All I am looking forward to a peaceful and lovely day I have never charged anyone for eating at my table If anyone goes hungry its their own fault. I personally love sone lemon cud on a piece of bread for tea. Peaceful day to you allx

Christmas here in Crete is low key whereas Easter is the big festival. So we are spared the whole farce and commercialisation of the UK.
Every Christmas morning we go to the village cafe bar for coffee or wine with our friends and then home for a quiet meal. Usually it's fish. We open a bottle and watch a favourite film ( 'In Bruges' this year, 'Withnail and I' was last year's fave) and eat whatever we like. Bliss! If it's sunny, we'll go the beach on Boxing Day and read, sitting in our deckchairs or go for a walk. It may be boring to some people but it suits us. And yes, Abigail's Party - we still have the dvd! Horrendous!

I plan to spend the day alone. Family is not near by. Last year being with family at Christmas was stressful.
I don’t think the ‘family unit’ is as important as it was a couple of generations ago, so all getting together for one hectic day can be a recipe for disruption.

I don't celebrate x-mas, but I think it's a nice time. I spend it with my parents and alone and I love to watch old x-mas feel good movies and just relax and eat tasty food. Pure bliss. I like spending Christmas alone,me and the dogs . We have a chicken and mash , neither the dogs nor i drink so wine isn't an issue. I do make a plum pudding right after our Thanksgiving,on the " charging thing " happend in my family when i was 14, most memorable Christmas ever - seeing all the grownups having a yelling match 😂😂😂 peace & love and marry Christmas to all
I’ve spent the last 15 Christmases alone. I’ve now got into a routine of having every other year with my friend, so she can visit distant relatives every couple of years. We still get together over the Christmas period. I quite like alternating it. My two close friends died quite a few years ago, and it’s nice to have found a new ‘best friend’ this late in life. 😊

Everyone does Christmas differently I find, there’s no right way or wrong way. I hosted for years, it was wonderful, everyone chips in with the work. This year as circumstances have changed we are going to my daughters and I will take my Christmas apron and homemade praline biscotti, plus a bottle or two, although nothing is expected. Sharing and caring, the essence of Christmas. Merry Christmas everyone, however you choose to spend it.
One thing about getting old is that you have done every iteration along the way. I was once dragged out to have Christmas dinner in a restaurant once. That didn’t work for me, but I love Christmas, so it all works for me. I have a hearing problem because I worked on heavy machinery for years, so I can’t hear conversations unless they are one on one, which is fine, because I like one on one. 😊
Our kids request cheese fondue🫕 every year on Cristmas Eve after church ! Not even an expensive homemade, but the cheap baggies from the supermarket!
Best thing is sitting together and having a good time! Board games after that!
Presents will be practical, too!
Instead of an expensive LEGO set our son asked for some inexpensive IKEA to organize his computer stuff! Puzzling THAT together should be just as satisfying and much fun!😂
And the daughter needs a new sensibly-priced mobile, but wants us to get it next year when they get cheaper!🎉
Boxing Day tradition is pasta and a jar of tomato sauce, because - when they were little - the kids wanted us to play with them and their new games!
Brother in law and his wife will only be with us on the third day of Christmas - that's when the good food is served! But I already pre-cooked that by and by during Advent, it is easily reheatable deer goulash, so no stress, good talks and a glass of wine!🍷
It is insane, what people carry home, only because of this one day!
All these expensive little packets of special sauce, of ready-made fancy meals, of ready-made exclusive desserts! And then it's a mountain of packaging in the bin and a bit of soggy salmon en croute, a runny sauce, and a dried up chocolate mousse! All washed down with expensive wines that no one really likes and sweet champagne that leaves us with a headache!

Actually, many years ago I saw a short (I think TH-cam) where an older widow lady was explaining that all her kids and grandkids wanted to come to her for Christmas because they wanted to eat Mum's cooking. However, she couldn't afford the expense so she did ask the kids to pay their share. I remember thinking that perhaps if she put away a little bit every week, she wouldn't have to ask them. I also thought that it would have been nice of the kids to offer rather than having to be asked. There's nowt so queer as folk! Anyway - you've got yours sorted! Have a wonderful Christmas. I understand what you are saying, Ruth, but today I was listening to someone talking about the WASPI women, and saying that they all had the information if they had only gone on social media, and they should have just prepared and saved more pension. I’ve been in a position where there is not enough for a contingency plan. Saving for a rainy day is now a very middle class aspiration.
I’m having a meal at my mum’s on Christmas Eve because my brother is spending Christmas Day with his daughter, my beautiful niece, so they are coming down from North Yorkshire. I’m doing the cheese, the wine and the mince pies.
I think the days of traditional Christmas Days are gone. The cost dictates that it takes on a whole different dynamic. It’s now a family compromise, rather than a family celebration.

In my younger days when my family members used to come together at christmas (aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents etc), no body arrived empty handed. Everyone cooked and brought something with them for the table. Ended with enough food to feed an army.
If you state that you'll provide everything.. You foot the bill and you foot the bill gracefully.

I grew up watching keeping up appearances and seeing misses bucket 🪣 (pronounced 💐) flaunt and being a menace and it subconsciously taught me not to be like that lol but strangely that's what everyone has turned into. It's sad but hopefully we'll all have a come too moment and all become a little more kind and humble and just ignore all the bs.
