Awesome Video. Loved the Comparisons. Keep in mind the reason you probably had to max some of the knobs out, especially the treble, is those pedals were designed to go in front of am amp, and not to be used specifically as preamps the way you did. Dave has said as much about the BE OD, and I would assume it's the same for the others. That's probably why you still had room to play on the tight Metal as it was designed with in front of the amp and. using as a Preamp in mind. Loved The BE OD, and The Fat Metal (after comparing to the Tight Metal in my rig) and I'll have to check out the G3. You should check out the ISP Theta if you want another brutal distortion pedal to compare. Also I don't believe a Class D power amp like the power stage is coloring the sound much. A Class A/B power amp like the ISP Stealth and the one Orange makes may be worth a try also.
Very sweet demo man on those slamming pedals. I'm eyeballing that Friedman I wouldn't mind running that on my effects loop again awesome video n demo. You keep rocking man!😎🎸👍
Hey man great job with the comparisons.if im not mistaken.i think the beod has an internal trim pot for the gain.the deluxe i had i couldnt go past 1:00 without it becoming unusable.i always use it with the presence at 1:00,bass at 10,mid at 1,treble at 1.vol at noon.i ran it through a powerstage 170 into 212 rec cab.always sounded monsterous.
Great video. If you’re just going to use pedals for distortion, get yourself a tube power amp like the Fryette power station. And yeah, I used to solely use digital stuff, but nothing can beat analog. Also check out the Lichtlaerm distortion pedals.
Would love to try the chug! I tried the heavy menace before doing this shoot out and it was surprisingly underwhelming. It struggled to get a very saturated heavy sound and was very thin. Really wanted to like it though and of course YMMV. Appreciate you checking out this shootout 🙂
@@TrainOfDarkness I'm surprised to hear that about the Heavy Menace. I'm waiting for my Black Clouds order... I actually made room on my board for it... The HM is a nice size but I hate the artwork.
Great video! I’m shocked you need that much gain on the Friedman pedal. lol. Maybe the inner trimpot on yours needs to be turned up. You should also try the empress heavy. It’s great. I switch between the Friedman and heavy. I like thinking of them as my “Marshall” and “mesa” tones. People hate when I say that but I like it. Ha. I run my pedalboard into the neural dsp Morgan sw50r plug-in. It sounds great for that. Making me want to trade my modded Friedman runt 50 for a Morgan. I just prefer the pedalboard into a clean amp thing. Even for metal.
Tone IS stupid and weird. I hate it. I want to go back to when i was younger and just plugged straight into the amp and didnt care what speakers i played through 😂 love this vid dude, you've provably made these pedals the best I've heard. I owned the first gen tight metal and that's still my favorite pedal. That revv purple sounded sick! The mxr sounds muffled just like it does in every other demo I've ever watched. Whats your go to helix model for tone matching the gojira? I use the badonk almost exclusively.
Hahahah don't I know it I used to just go hard on a Digitech multi-fx and thought i sounded amazing those were the days 😂 On helix I usually go badonk, Revv purple, angl meteor, or the archon! They kinda all get the same thing with slightly different sound but they kinda end up sounding like this! Thanks a ton for watching 🙏🙏
@TrainOfDarkness I've been playing around with the archon and placater dirty, lately. They all sound great with a good ir through headphones but so far the badonk is sounding the best through an actual power amp and cab.
@@jeeeeev the power stage is very clean, so I go straight into the input. Guitar -> helix -> poweramp. Then I have a separate XLR routed through an IR for going direct
Kind of weird to go into the gate first without using the loop. Is your guitar that noisy that you need the gate? It's not muting your distortion so I don;t see what the point is, especially since you're rolling your volume off anyway. Am I missing something?
Well, I just received my MXR EVH 5150 today so I’m hoping that’s it. Although I have since heard one that might actually be a bit better, but also cost twice as much.. the KSR Ceres preamp. Amazing but very expensive. I’m gonna have to try the Archetype Gojiri suite in Neural DSP. I tried the Petrucci plugin and loved it but can’t do $150 for it just yet.
@@TrainOfDarkness well, I tried the 5150 and I can't get anywhere near the tones everyone else gets but I'm thinking it's my guitar. I have a 1980 Gibson V2 that I bought brand new and have owned for 44 years. It is an absolutely gorgeous guitar but the Gibson boomerang pickups are weak and sound very Strat like. Yesterday I had my 5150 at a local music store and played a bunch of guitars through it; mostly Jackson's. I definitely got much more gain but still didn't like the tone. There was one Dean that I played that wasn't bad. The best I've heard through the 5150 is a Solar V which uses SD pickups. The same guy who played that (Ola England) also played a Solar S V1.6 through this KSR Ceres and it sounded amazing! It had that nice tight crunch distortion that still had plenty of mid and bottom without being muddy. All of this is to say that, although I'd love to have a Ceres on my board, I think I need to get me a shred axe with some hotter pickups or it's not gonna matter what overdrive or distortion or preamp I have, I'm never gonna get that sound I want.
@@TrainOfDarkness listen to this video. This is Ola England doing a demo of an MXR EVH 5150 overdrive. He's playing a Solar V 1.60 into the 5150, and then into the clean channel of a Randall tube amp. The tone that he has between 1:21 and 1:26.... THAT is the tone I'd love to have. I have the 5150, and I have the tube amp (JCM800 50 WATT lead). Now I just need to save my pennies for a $1200 Solar V1.60. My poor old Gibson V2 just can't do it. Actually what I'd really like to have is an Ernie Ball Musicman JP Majesty. But those are quite a bit more than $1200. th-cam.com/video/go6Rp8LpG1A/w-d-xo.htmlsi=_flYrDYJLTZ1bctP
@@bretttrommler756 ah yeah I know the one! I think the tone stack is pretty different between that amp and the marshall. Maybe try a pickup swap first or if you can run the pedal some different ways or though different cabs before replacing your whole axe. Good luck my dude!
I have connected this pedal directly to the sound card with an IR and it does not even have the gain of an overdrive. but when using a tube amplifier yes. any solution ?
I guess maybe be it’s that riff you’re playing because I didn’t like any of them. At all. I just bought a 5150 so I hope it sounds better than that. Nothing against your playing; I just don’t like that riff.
Unless you opened the Friedman and turned up the trim pots you are getting about 1/2 of the gain it is capable of getting. Don't know why they did that but they did
