- This is the A&E Biography of famed actress Vivien Leigh, discussing her entire life and career: From starring roles in films such as "Gone With the Wind" and "A Streetcar Named Desire", to her romance and marriage to Laurence Olivier.
Hosted by Harry Smith. Produced in 2000.
My Dad was an Engineer on a Merchant Navy ship back in the 1940's - 1950's. There were a multitude of seamen coming and going, he got to know many. He told me a story one time how there was a young new guy who had severe sea sickness and complained a lot. The men were patient with him to an extent but soon began to tease him. A few weeks before Christmas, as they were sailing back from New York, they caught this guy writing Christmas cards to his family, and one of them was to Vivien Leigh.
They teased him about it, called him an idiot and why would he be writing cards to movie stars? But it turned out - he WAS the cousin of Vivien Leigh, and they WERE about to spend Christmas together! He returned that January with a photograph of them together and she had written a message on the back to his workmates. The young man got a lot more respect after that!
I have watched all the documentaries and videos I can find on Vivien Leigh, and this one is by far the most personal and insightful, a sensitive telling of her life, her career, her character and the battles that challenged her to her core, but never defeated her.
Vivien Leigh was, is and will always be a rare and precious gift. Thank you, Ms. Leigh -- Lady Olivier -- for sharing your Light with us! 🕊💞🕊
Happy Happy Birthday Vivian Leigh! Gone With The Wind has survived these 81 years because of you! You made that film! No offense to the rest of the cast. All were wonderful, but you are the one I remember when I think of the film.
I always remember feeling bad for Belle Watling; her ‘relationship’ with Captain Butler left much to be desired- like I remember thinking that he may have been the father to her son in NOLA.
She was a great actress and a great character!
I loved Belle!

@@katherinea.williams3044 Yes Belle was a great character and it is too bad her part was not bigger. She I felt really loved Captain Butler, but he didn't love her back. Well maybe he did, He just could not see her. Ona Munson the actress who played Belle was so good. She made you really feel for her. And you are right, Ona Munson was a great actress.
Vivien and Larry predate Liz and Dick!
I watched it for the first time just a couple of years ago, to see what all the fuss was about. It really is an incredible movie, and how can you not fall in love with Vivien Leigh in that film? Devastatingly attractive, and a great performance.
I watched it again just a few nights ago.
@@katherinea.williams3044 Yes there are a few subtle hints that Belle saw Butler the same way he saw Scarlett.
Thanks for posting this. What a shame to have categorized her role as being an "older woman." She was in her late 30's when she did this role and whatever the percieved age of this role, she didn't look that old, just someone in her late 30's who was a bit haggard from stress or something. Time have changed. Loved that movie! Acting by everyone was so great.
Hey Catherine, I’m a highly discerning movie lover and I believe she was just 25 at the time of filming, that makes her performance, just, ALL THE MORE.
If you’re referring to GWTW.
I’m just at the beginning of the video.

Elia Kazan had a lot of nerve saying that Vivien Leigh wasn't a "great talent ". He had a lot of nerve. She had natural raw talent.. She had death as an actor and her performances looked real and not acted. And I suppose with Kazan. A stage durectie he was more accustomed to working with actors that looked like they were actor. And Ms. Leigh's performances leaned .more toward realism and film acting. toward
Great information. Thanks
I always loved Olivier(Rebecca being my favorite movie, my daughter was named Rebekah) but man, you couldn't wait one freaking day to tear her world apart, had to be on her birthday?
He was a very cold and callous person. In sickness and in health meant absolutely nothing to him. As soon as sickness came into the picture, he ran with his tail between his legs.
I always felt L. Olivier, was a Stuffed Shirt . Pompous. Like Prince Charles was with Princess Diana. Both men were stunned, when the World preferred Their Wives…To Them ‼️
I don’t blame her for hating. Hollyweird! We do to now. It started for me around 2001-2025
One of the complications of Bipolar Disorder is hyper sexuality. This part of Vivian Leigh’s life was omitted in this biography.
These A&E Biographies leave a lot CB of things out.
Leigh's favorite performance was WATERLOO BRIDGE.
Vivien never looked more beautiful that when she was in 'Waterloo Bridge'. Her beauty was ethereal........almost too good to be true.
Elia Kazan was a creep for putting V.L. through repetitive takes for no reason. Sadistic. Who was unhinged? Kazan, of course.
"ANNA KARENINA" IS NOT A LOVE STORY. IT IS A BRILLIANT ANALYSIS OF MENTAL ILLNESS. VIVIAN LEIGH IS BRILLIANT IN THE TITLE ROLE.
Wow! I had no idea Mia Farrow was the daughter of Maureen O'Sullivan!.... Nepotism was bigger than I thought.
Vivien Leigh, Jean Simmons & Elizabeth Taylor
When Jean Simmons burst on to the silver screen, there were rumours circulating that she was the illegitimate daughter of Vivien Leigh and Laurence Olivier, however, Vivien would have been just 15 years old when Jean was born, and it was years before Vivien met Larry, but apparently, even Olivier himself remarked that Jean was definitely a 'strange mix of myself and Vivien'.
Olivier and Leigh was before Tracy and Hepburn.
the most beautifuI!!!!!
Vivain the love of my life
Vivien Leigh looked like her father. As I understand he was of Scottish descent. Her mother on the other hand was an Englishwoman who was also part Irish and part Armenian....interesting.
Not Armenian. Hindu.
Elia kazan was somewhat sadistic.
I agree. He and Karl Marden were saying for decades that Jessica Tandy was better as Blanche but Marlon Brando (who I think knew what he was talking about, where acting was concerned) said he vastly preferred Vivien in the role. To me it's mind boggling that anyone could fault Vivien Leigh in Streetcar. I think she's as good if not better than Meryl Streep.
Candace Glendenning in her youth looked a lot like Vivien Leigh.
That's true. Candy was very beautiful. Her father was a very close friend of my parents and he was extremely proud of her.
Who is Laurence Oliver?
Rhetorical question.
He was in Gone with the wind. He played Mammy VanDoren
He was her husband from 1940-1960.
@@TrangPakbaby 😂 Thanks-I needed a good laugh today. Well done!
Parsi is Persian, she should have Persian on her grand parent, because long time ago with the attacks of Arabs to Persia many of Persian fled to India to scape the Islam religion.
How can you say ,her Indian part is not relevant ...
She born in India , that makes you Indian ,besides what colonialism has to say ,they invade a country called India , so She Is part Indian , even her mother born in India .

My last name is OLIVER!! 🤗👏🙏💃
"she loved her daughter". right. What Vivian loved was VIVIAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Laurence Oliver was gay wasnt he?
Obviously, not exclusively! 😂
Olivier was bysexual man.
Olivier was bysexual man.
Who is Laurence Oliver?
Just some British actor who starred in a few films (Wuthering Heights, Pride and Predudice, Henry VThe Boys from Brazil....) and many stage productions. A great looking guy
@@Nina5144And my personal favorite: as Max De Winter in Rebecca!
Olivier is not my favorite, by a longshot.
And being cold and callous to Vivien didn't help improve my opinion of him.
I much prefer Lady Olivier (Vivien) because she owns the camera.
The camera never owns her.
She's my favorite British actress, next to Dame Judi Dench.
I'm also not a huge fan of Elizabeth Taylor - but I must give her flowers for the stellar performance she gave in "Suddenly, Last Summer".
Olivier was bysexual man.
He loves marlon brando.
