WOW ! What a 1 Hour and 40 Minutes of Pure Adrenalin ! Never knew all of what Mark Skaife had achieved ! I met him at the Central Coast , in the Streets of Terrigal and said " Good Day " to Mark and also said , " You Mad Driver , I love your Racing Style " ! He looked at me and smiled ! I think he said "Thanks" ! Then he went ! He had his Wife with him and and Child was there too , from memory ! What a Nice Feller ! I Always Loved his Racing ! Finally , like All or at least Sensible Racing Drivers , he called it quits in Racing ! I think that Family then became Number One Issue for Mark ! Mark still Commentates on Races and he sure is good at that too ! Cheers to You , Skaifey !!
As a racer from "the States", I was too late to the party to appreciate Mark's talent and career. Thank you, SO MUCH, for giving me a look into the history of V8SC!
Still loving this little history lesson in 2019. American here who would love to see more of things like these on essentially any of these guys who raced from say late 80s on (I don't really have an interest in the 60s 70s stuff) I'm mainly attracted to 90s+ V8 era. I don't get how running moonshine around the wild hills and such in the southern US, NASCAR, essentially running around in circles and drag racing in a straight line become our biggest motorsports. THIS is what should have happened here. I subscribe to "Superview" and watch the practice sessions on here. I did own a 2004 Pontiac GTO (Holden Monaro) LS1 v8 , 6 speed, fun to drive. More like a GT type car, trunk, nice seats but still plenty fast. Mine had headers and just single outlet exhaust, nice sleeper. 37x hp to the wheels (can't remember exactly) .
I like the part when jim richards tells fg what the damage is on the gtr. How bads the car well he owes him a small bottle shop lol that's the funniest line
Thank you for uploading, I was lucky enough to be at Wanneroo when Skafe won his first ATCC race and I have enjoyed watching his entire career, even now as a commentator he is great to watch. Big Thumbs Up from me :D
Have a lot of respect for Skaife even tho I'm a Ford McLaughlin fan.... So good to have him still part of the sport and best commentator. God bless Skaife with many more years in the v8.
I'm glad I came across this, was awesome to watch! I was only born in '90 so I didn't see the Nissan years, but as a kid i'd try to watch as much of the v8's as I could and HRT were my favourite in that late 90's/early 00's era. I'd always watch closely at the likes Skaife, Lowndes, Murph etc. For some reason the series doesn't have the same kind of atmosphere anymore and the top drivers don't seem to receive the same respect as it looks like they used to. Although it will be good to look back at the current era in 20 years time!
I have always been a Ford fan and always will be, still i must admit much respect for Mark Skaife, also for Larry Perkins, ( for the record Glenn Seton was ATCC champion 1997 ) Marks crash 48min was HUGE the car would be a write off!!!!
I wasn't a fan until one round in Darwin. Skaife had a front wheel torn off in a crash. Got the car back to the pits. Great work by the mechanics saw him start R2 at the rear of the field. He carved his way through much of the field. Come R 3 he got through and won the race. That made an impression. Easily the best driver of his era in Australia.
Great upload. The first V8 race I saw live on TV (at 2am in Ireland) was the Bathurst 1000 in 03 with Skaife's door opening after John Bowe bashed into him and I remember how infuriated I was at the time. Ive become a huge fan of the sport since but I can honestly say it was Mark Skaife on that day (and Murph) that keeps me searching through the internet looking for today's races. If anyone knows where to see them let me know. Its not shown here anymore. Booo!!
You can make assumptions about people you never meet. Believing only 2nd hand information. After watching this video. It definitely gave me a different view of someone who believed in himself to do the best he could do. It,s always good if you can find your path in this life. And it seems Mark Skaife found his. All the best to him.
Mike Raymond really was the voice of motorsport in this part of the world wasn't he. Its like hearing the voice of an old mate you haven't seen or heard for a long time.
He was an oxygen thief of the highest level. Led the hate campaign when that halfwit Brock couldnt win FA in his pussbox Commodore. Was a great day when gave it up.
Lived on the same street, Pollock Ave, North Wyong,NSW super young man, great driver his Father Russ was a friendly man we would often have a beer at the tennis club!
They have not payed the debt to Australia. Billions payed in subsidies and they shipped 150 million back to the states before shut down here. They'll never pay it back however they have lost clientele which has cost them dearly. With massive Colorado problems, and declining sales. They will be a footnote in our history.
So we agree they were insolvent and asked the hard working Australians for a handout to keep up an unsustainable business model for many years. I'm intrigued about an American business helping out us in WW2 though. Happy to be educated.
Really enjoyed the video. Didn't know much about him but he was a true champion, great team mate it seems and only 2 teams in all his career. Touring Car winner, Open wheel winner, triple crown. You would have to be a Ford Fan to not respect him. If Jim Richards speaks for him that's good enough for me.
There needs to be a greater focus on feeding Australian kart kids into open-wheel classes. It doesn't mean losing potential Supercar racers, because you can race 'em after a full top flight open wheel career. It would feed Supercars with more rounded racing drivers.
I believe it's because of 2 reasons, #1 being that with Group A rules, the manufacturers had to sell a certain number of cars and Holden didn't make enough of the Turbo model VL's at the time for the car to be eligible. The 2nd - and I'm only speculating here - is that manufacturers had to use an engine that was designed and produced by them and given the RB30 was a Nissan motor, it probably didn't fit the bill for that reason either.
Amaroo. Oran Park. Sacred Sydney Motorsport circuits. Disappeared. Who can stand in the way when money can be made? Would never happen to a football stadium. Scandalous.
Greatest ever race car driver... and the v8sc were the definition of a "race car"... not a funny car or top fuel, f1, nascar etc... even now, this man can jump into any sedan and drive it like no one else.
After the Nissans it was all down hill from there for supercar racing australia, just wasn’t that interesting anymore. Diversity in cars is what always made the great race great!
Got a lot of respect for Mark Scaife as a driver but I’ll never forget as an 7 year old at symonds plains when he was still driving the gtr a group of 10 or so kids were trying to get our posters signed he told us and I quote “fuck off you little cunts” I then went to Brockys tent and my father got our posters signed and he spoke to my dad for 10 minutes. The difference between a legend and a pretender I think.

Sorry Mark you know exactly why the enforcer was bumping so he doesn't hit the hole at the end of the rumble strip which every driver knew about and to keep him with one side on the grass you should have opened up and given him the room after the first bump you didn't he punted you that's racing it's not dirty what he did you would have do exactly the same
The AWD turbo 4’s & 6’s were incredible road cars & race cars but it showed up the Australian V8 taxi’s for what they really were, ie shitboxes... so what do we do ...simple we ban any car that isn’t a V8 taxi. Thus the pathetic era of V8 supercars began which is a complete farce. The great days of production based race cars of Group C then Group A was tossed aside for the complete joke of V8 supercars which is silhouette racing just so we could have shitty Australian badged cars winning to help prop up the failing local motor industry & help sustain the charade that Australian built cars were world class...hahahaha what a load of shit.
That’s motor racing, to win you have to have a good car, and if you have a good car you need to find a great driver. Bad cars, like bad drivers, rarely win races.

Yeah the best engine Holden ever had a was a nissan RB30 LOL
The gov put a stop to ford Holden muscle cars ..... Holden had a 308 in a xu1 body on there drawing board
Because there were no Mario’s in Grp A
