#17 - Early 1965 Ford Mustang COLOR & TRIM Codes

- Hello, and welcome back to the “Yours in old FoMoCo iron” TH-cam channel! My name is Adrian Clements, and today in video #17 we’re going to learn about the COLOR and TRIM Codes on early 1965 Ford Mustangs. We’ll answer the questions what paint colours, what interior colours and materials, what vinyl roof colours, and what convertible top colours were available on these cars. We’ll see paint and interior samples from period Ford dealership literature and an application chart summarising the findings, and finally we’ll review some photos of early ’65 Mustangs showing their paint and interior trim colours. Let’s get started!

For 34 years I owned an early '65 convertible, serial 101572 from the San Jose plant. It was white with black top and interior and a pinstripe and rocker panel molding in place of the chrome side "scoop."
My first car was an early '65 Mustang that I purchased in November of '68 for $1,400 dollars. It was white with a white interior. I was so proud of that car. My monthly car payment was 54 dollars and I was a sailor in the Navy making 97.50 a month at the time. Sadly it was destroyed when it was rear ended by a '62 Oldsmobile 98.
My 1st car in '71 was a Sunlight Yellow '65 hardtop with the black buckets. Paid a grand for it.
Good coverage. Years ago, our family restored Mustangs. Our oldest was a 64-1/2 convertible , I believe it was the first week of production.
It was a C code with a 3 speed cruise omatic but the interesting part was the factory black LEATHER interior. We never found it’s original use but suspected it was for display or show.
Last I heard, it was now at a Ford dealership in Portland OR
@Alaska_Engineer, I wonder if that Mustang convertible with the leather interior was one of the 1964 New York World's Fair cars?

I was 7 when this car was unleashed to the American public. My parents had a '63 Ford Galaxie 500 xl Rangoon Red 289. They immediately went to the local Ford dealer to get one. It took 9 months. Exactly as the car above. But a 289 four barrel carb, Gt convertible with power steering and power brakes, AM radio,. I think it was a four speed . My mother loved this car. But while she was driving it into our town...a Delivery truck lost it brakes and hit the rear end from the drivers side rear tire to the back. My mom was ok. The car was totaled. We had that car three weeks. The insurance company offered three other cars. You couldn't Mustangs after that .... They choose the Ford Galaxie 500 XL convertible. They liked it too... But that Mustang was something special. I still love them.

The early Mustangs "I think" had different in dash heater control. The early ones were only two speed with off in the middle and the later Mustangs had three speed heaters with off to the left most position. Thanks for your time, work and posting......

Change over from 2 speed heater with off in the center to three speed with off all the way to the left was around March of 65. Lots of early features carried over into early 65’s
I like to see this on a 66 mustang. A few years ago we drove halfway across the country because we located 866 Ford mustang convertible for my wife. Back in the day I had 65 coupe with solid quarters floor pans everything was solid. Is that maroon looking burgundy color with black interior. Soldier a long time ago. My wife's car has that bench seat.
I've never seen them in a car. Have seen then in the wasp meet at Carlisle. And that is the bench seat for Mustang.

An excellent comprehensive guide for the early mustangs. I have a 1965, the codes are simple enough that I don't have to be James Bond, agent 007 to decipher them. I was 7 years old when the mustang made it's debut, then when I saw it featured in the Bond movie "Goldfinger", I became thoroughly infatuated with them! Thanks for this great Vlog!! Do you know when the 200 c.i. 6 cylinder made it's debut, as I only saw the 170 c.i . 6 cylinder listed in the official Ford literature,
@carlc5748, thank you kindly - I'm so glad that you liked video #17! The base T-code 200-1V 120 hp I-6 engine was first listed as being available for the "regular" 1965 Ford Mustangs, so I would expect that it was introduced to replace the base U-code 170-1V 101 hp I-6 engine in August 1964.

I also use the "early '65 Mustang" term... and explain that there is no such thing as a '64 1/2 Mustang.
This latter-day term basis is easy- Ford had advertised "1/2" in '62 and '63. The mid year addition of the fastback rooflines on Galaxie and Falcon (and the V8 in the Falcon) probably is the most remembered as '63 1/2 by the public.

It can take between 24 and 48 hours of work to come up with the video idea, identify the literature resources, figure out the flow of the video, prepare the images, write the script, record the script, compile the video, and publish it. It's a very rewarding process, but I'm usually pretty wiped by the time the video hits TH-cam.

Ford referred to them as 64.5’s. There are three categories; 64.5’s made from March of 64 till end of July of 64 with a generator, early 65’s made from August of 64 till March of 65 and late 65’s made from March of 65. You also forgot paint code C that was pace car white used on the 64.5 pace car replicas. Paint code c changed to honey gold at the start of 65 production. I am a gold card judge for MCA for 64-66 concours
Not a huge mustang fan but I'd let a 65 or 66 2+2 in the driveway.
I own a 1966 notch back in Ember glow Gold with a off white vinyl roof. It has been repainted at some stage before it arrived in New Zealand. I have checked the code tag and it is all correct but I understand that this colour combination was only offered in 1966. Do you how many were produced? I am new to your channel so will look back on your earlier videos as I also used to own a 1965 in Vintage Burgandy. Cheers Ian
@ianlangley987, the paint colour Emberglo was only available for the 1966 model year, so the combination of Emberglo with a white vinyl top was only possible during the 1966 model year. Unfortunately, there is no way to know the production number for this combination, as Ford's electronic production records for the 1966 model year were erased years ago.

Did Ford actually build any early 65 Mustangs with cloth seats? I do not remember ever seeing one, even back in 64.
I never knew vinyl/cloth combo was even a possible offering.

While in high school I had a part-time job in a salvage yard after school (absolutely the coolest job a kid could ever want), and at that time, the early mustangs were about 10 years old and we scrapped a ton of them. I probably pulled several hundred 65/66 Mustang seats and I can't recall ever seeing anything but vinyl. Out of all those cars I only remember seeing one with a bench seat and at this point in time I have no idea what year vehicle it was in,
@danielulz1640, I don't have any early 1965 Ford Mustang in my FoMoCo photo archives with Trim Code "56", the black cloth and vinyl bucket seat interior. They must have built some, though!
