  • The Ford Mustang was arguably one of the most anticipated car launches of all time. So how exactly did 22-year-old school teacher Gail Wise snag the very first car on April 15, 1964, two days before the car was officially introduced at the New York World's Fair on April 17? Also tbf to cars now days, many would be fine if people actually wanted to keep them. But theres kind of a throw away culture in modern america, where people think a car is bad because its been 100K miles and lack of proper care and maintenance has the car running worse and theres obvious wear and tear. If you really love a car you can make it last forever usually

Love the story. I also kind of lived the story. My dad bought a new Mustang convertible 260 V8 automatic in May of 64. The salesman told my dad it was the fifth convertible built. I was the kid with the cool dad. The reaction we got back then was crazy. It seem like everybody back then love the Mustang. Fun times.

I’ve only just found this now but what a fantastic story! AND what wonderful custodians of such an iconic car in history! I’m in Australia & my first memory of any Mustang on our roads was late 60’s or very early 70’s! I fell in love there & then! Now in my mid 50’s I have a 1968 GT390 fastback in Acapulco blue. It’s still LHD & I love driving it in good weather of course. It’s never been restored & has a beautiful 50 year old patina. Again, a lovely video👍🏻😎

That was the first Mustang made but not the first one sold as they were introduced in the USA first. The 5F08F 000.01 was on display on April 17th for one week/eight days in St. John's and then Stanley Tucker bought it. The agreement was to display it for that length of time. @@saycat6758

The Official Launch Date for the Mustang Was April 17, 1964, But Tucker Was Able to Buy His on the 14th; Which Makes This the Official Purchase Date and the Very First Mustang Ever Sold”. I met Mr. Tucker and his family. What a nice guy! He came to the Ford Rouge Factory Tour (Dearborn Assembly), during a trip to Detroit last year during which a dinner took place honoring him. I was a presenter there and met hime on the walkway. He ran the Ford store in St. John’s in 1964. The car is in the Henry Ford Museum, and has a Newfoundland tag. However, that car was not the first one produced. I don’t know if it really has VIN 0000001, but the first one produced is on display in the Legacy Gallery at the Rouge Plant (where it was built, as were all the Mustangs through the early 2000s. It is a white convertible with white interior. It, too, was sold to a customer, and later acquired by the museum and restored. I have this on good authority from the curators at the museum.

There is just something magical about the mustang. I was born in June 1964 and tried to buy a 1964 with a 260 V8 3 speed standard shift but my stepdad said he wasn't loaning me $920.00 for a car that needed floor pans replaced. This was in 1980, instead he bought me a 1968 Mercury Cougar XR 7. I consider myself blessed to have owned that beautiful Cougar. Even now at 56 years old I still keep a mustang, A 1983 GT sold new in Texas car with a 5 speed and a 4bbl. Thanks for the memories of my youth.

I really love the early Ford Mustang I bought one in October 1984 and it was built in Dearborn Michigan in May 1964 as the Vin plate code indicated...Anyway mine was totally original including a Generator instead of an Alternator. My parents Bought a 1965 Ford Mustang New back in February 1965 at Bay Shore motors in San Diego, and theirs had Disc Brakes and alternator . I sold my car back in 1992 because I needed the funds to get married. I later purchased a 1967 Mercury Cougar but I have found it is not the same as the Mustang because it is so much harder to get parts for it!!!

1964, that was the year I turned 16 and was able to buy my first car, a '30 Model A Coupe. Now it's fully restored and I still own it as well. But I sort of wish I could have bought a new Mustang as well,, anywhere from '64 to '68. A ragtop or fastback version would now likely be worth more than my Model A. But I still couldn't have more fun with another car.

I was an English 8 yr old kid in Minnesota in 1964. This was the best car I'd ever seen and remains my favourite American car of all time! I love this car. I'm 64 now, but one hellofa quirk of fate one of my in laws own a 65 Mustang, fully restored from the bones up. It's now better than show room condition but it's built in "Rally" mode! I'm gonna try and persuade him to get a 68 "Bullitt" Mustang to restore! Then they can share part of his garage, along with an E-Type Jaguar!

I also was a kid living in Chicago when these came out in 64. I wasn't sure if I liked them. My dad then bought a 65 stang and later handed it down to me. We put over a 100k miles on that little Mustang.

It was out of the first run for sure. The first run of Mustangs off the production line were all convertibles.

The car might end up in a museum for everyone to enjoy. My dad bought a beautiful black 67, with red interior. He wanted it to drive back and forth to work. He bought it from the daughter who owned our local corner market. He promised when I graduated from high school, he’d give it to me. Unfortunately, I never got the Mustang. The first week of June there was a family wedding. My parents had left early, and I was waiting for a limousine to pick me up at our house. I was occasionally looking out our front door. I noticed 2 younger guys who appeared to be in need of a shower approach the Mustang. Since the car looked almost new, they were standing beside it ogling it and after a minute walked away. As they walked down the street, I saw the limousine inching its way looking at addresses. When it came to a stop in front of the house, the two began a new rant. Pointing and carrying on. I was more than uncomfortable. But I went across the street to check, and sure enough my dad hadn’t locked it. I punched both locks down, asked the chauffeur to wait a minute as I went around the house locking all the doors. I hesitated, but the chauffeur opened the door of the limousine for me, I got in, gave him my dates address, and we left. I looked out the back window and that’s the last time I saw the Mustang. The next morning my folks woke me asking where I had parked the Mustang. My dad had only himself to blame, I was pissed my graduation present had been stolen. Instead, my dad bought me the ugliest 1976 blue, LTD coupe. I really hated that car.

My all-time favorite car is the 1964 1/2 Ford Mustang. 👍 I loved the story and was wonderful; she still has the car.

back when new car models were a big thing!! the mustang was the biggest.! those cars still look great and still turn heads almost 56 years latter! park her mustang next to a 2020 convertible, hers will draw the people.
