Hi EnterGment. You have precisely summed up the problem. We can either play it in first pos. with clumsy string changes or in third with difficult finger agility. I prefer the third pos solution as I explain in the video at 3:56. It's worth practicing this to achieve the necessary flexibility of the fingers. Remember that only the first finger moves, stretching backward for the C#. The rest of the hand stays anchored in 3rd pos. It might help to rest your palm against the body of the violin.

Hi Mr. Sonne,I love your music, and the way you teach it. I’m a self taught violinist and work diligently at learning the right way to play. I am moving along slowly, and discouraging at times, without a live violin teacher. It seems like I’m bouncing all over the place trying to perfect this and that and never getting a whole lot done, discouraging. I enjoy your soft sound while playing the violin. More expression is revealed, because of it. I try to focus on lighter touch, than too much pressure. I would love some of your good advice about being more focused and making the most of each practice sessio.Thank you for your lovely you tube videos.Sincerely,Dyan
