the rope being purple giving two super dark theories to mind. Harold killed his mother and framed it as suicide or. Harold's mother actually had the same powers of creation as he did and instead of using it for her child, ie providing him a better life, decided to never use her abilities and got Stockholm-ed into an abusive relationship leaving her child to suffer and think he was alone in the world with his abilities. And after her child had had enough to left her behind, she used her abilities one last time to instead of looking for him, to end her life.
A third interpretation is that, devastated by the loss of her purple-loving son, she hanged herself with a purple rope, as her last possible connection to the one thing she loved. In actuality, I believe the rope indicates Harold killed her. I'd think an abused spouse would be happy her abusive partner was dead and she could start the long road to healing and loving herself. If Harold hated her though, I don't know why he'd wait a year to off her.

No, the narrator said that Harold’s mother never saw him again. Plus, the narrator said she also hung herself with a purple rope a year later. This could obviously imply that she might have figured out how to use the crayon and just wanted to end herself out of misery.
