A couple of things to add. When you are going to remove the plug, remove the filler cap as well. Additionally, remove the oil filter while the drain plug is out. This creates a wide open drainage and ensures you completely empty the crank case. For a clean tip, if you get a piece of aluminum foil, you can shape it into a pan and lay that on the exhaust. When you remove the oil filter, it will run the old oil onto the foil and not your exhaust.

@@stepheng3014 Placing the bike on the side stand instead of the main stand while draining oil does remove additional oil also.
@@megamember6195 I do this to I also lean the bike over to get more oil out but that's being anal..... I also use a flexi funnel to fill oil back up as the oil cap/hole is an awkward angle without it being messy.

Why would you prevent oil from getting onto your exhaust? Sounds stupid. It's oil. It protects against rust. Smh. Might as well as not put oil in your engine.
Thanks, Mike! I've got a Raven '07 FZ1. Love the bike. Just bought it a month ago from the original owner who only put 1100 miles on the bike. He probably hadn't changed the oil since new. Your video gave me a quick heads up. Changing the oil tomorrow.

Thanks for posting. I also have a Cobalt Blue '07 FZ1. I might suggest you loosen the fill plug when draining the oil. Drain the oil on the side stand, especially the filter to avoid oil on the exhaust header, or use a bit of cardboard to cover the pipes. A funnel is very useful for filling the oil, much faster and easier. The center stand on level ground is perfect for checking the oil level in the sight window.

If you have a stuck oil filter like I did, use sandpaper between the strap wrench and the filter (rough side touching the filter) it'll prevent the strap from slipping and give you a lot more grip. If that doesn't work, also try using Kano Kroil between the filter and the base to break the bond, then try the sandpaper with strap wrench.
Erman Akbay Great idea! I may be a little late to the party, but when I have a stuck filter I usually just hammer a Phillips screw driver through the side of the filter and use it like a handle to break it lose. Granted, oil kind of goes everywhere but works great.
I have the Zero Gravity Touring screen on my '12 model, and it makes a BIG difference if you do a lot of highway and such. It does increase frontal area a bit, so it will cut top speed down by a couple of mph ... 156 down to 153, for me. But I don't go that fast often (-: so it is okay!
Revzilla offers several touring screens for the FZ1, but be SURE you get the right year model! It changed a little in '06 when they changed the frame.
THe V-Stream screen is also very good at controlling airflow, but not quite as tall...so you still can tuck down behind it at high speeds, but it offers slightly less wind protection to the head/face. Puig also offers one, with 'blackout' at the bottom that looks pretty nice.
Buy your self a funnel
It's a tour windshield for a 07 Yamaha FZ1 but I can't seem to find the website that I bought it from about a year ago, it seems to work well at lower speeds but at high speeds it still can get windy.

absolutely must use side stand to completely drain, learned this the hard way
I would put on a pair of disposable gloves as the oil can get a bit hot and best to rub off the gloves than your skin.You can get a oil filter removal cap on the oil filter i get an extension bit for the ratchet through the exhaust pipes and an adaptor to put into the key a bit awkward but it can be done.

Great thanks for How-to vid. I used some aluminium foil on exhaust to stop oil getting on there.
See what you mean with the end cap wrench being a tight fit with wrench. Ran a 3/8 extention between pipes to get my torque wrench on the end. Going to need an inch torque..the big brute won't dial down low enough. Tough to gauge strength I'm exerting on filter with the cap wrench and ratchet.
Going to get one of those cheap lever wrenches like in your vid.
they say hand tight then between a quarter to half a turn as you only want to create a seal between the engine block and oil filter seal nothing more.
Upon drainage, I tilt the bike on its kick stand for a few mins and surprisingly more oil drips out into the pan.
It called a FZ1 Touring windshield and it works pretty good for lower speeds, but at high speeds I still get hit pretty good with the wind.

Don't forget to replace the gasket/washer for the engine oil drain bolt, part no 214-11198-01-00 (Singapore)
It's very cheap and also for the peace of mind.

Very helpful video thank you. One question though say you fill it with to much oil what's the best thing to do?
You can drain some by slowly releasing the drain my plug.
I usually wrap some aluminum foil around the exhaust when taking the oil filter off. I also drain using the side stand. I also just fill the whole oil glass window.
The only thing if you just leave the bike on center stand and drain you miss a fair amount of oil in the motor.I tip my bike over on the stand and drain it completely. There seem to be about 8oz of oil left not doing this.

What’s the best oil to use?
It’s recommended to use Yamalube 4 (20W40) or SAE 20W40 type SE motor oil. But shop around there is many other brands that also works good.
I USED A FRAM..HUNKY DORY
fz1 is easy because their isn't any useless plastics covering everything like on sport bikes lol
