    Also note that the Lavalier & PinMic come with a 10 year extended warranty when purchased from authorised dealers if you ever have any issues with the connectors or mic.

      Extended warranty is a plus but unfortunately I switched from Rode Pinmic to Sennheiser MK40, sorry dudes but the Sennheiser sound is from another planet and the comparison makes the Rode sounds like a cheap mic.

    Hello Dave. I found with the Sennheiser, when I used these a few years ago, That turning the 'mic body' off axis slightly would cut some of the sibilance. Also at 90 degrees or even inverted. You know, the technique for talent that doesn't keep within a level range when speaking if you're not using a limiter.

  • @FlorianFahrenberger
    @FlorianFahrenberger 10 ปีที่แล้ว +23

    It might be a personal preference, but I almost always hate the sound of Rode mics. Lots of bass, but the high frequencies are missing.
    In my opinion: The Sennheiser wins big time. You can always take down the high frequencies, but you can't boost them a lot if they are just missing (Rode). The PinMic sounds pretty convincing, it doesn't have the usual Rode overpronounced bass. It sounds like there is a gap at around 1000 Hertz which makes the voice a little "hollow". And the Rode lav just sounds like a Rode. Kind of "cool", but terrible to really work with.
    Especially considering the price, I'll go with the Sennheiser any day.

    • @ZodiacMusicPro
      @ZodiacMusicPro 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! Just commented the exact same thing! Although I would add, that you CAN actually "boost" the highs if missing by simply attenuating the mid-lows. This way you pronounce more the highs!

    • @costinvaly1
      @costinvaly1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ZodiacMusicPro And in the end it's way better to add something in post if you want more of it, rather than removing something that's hardly embedded in the sound source natively. The esses are horrible on the Sennheiser ME2. Don't get me wrong, i'm a sennheiser fan, i own their HD800 flagship headphones. But right now I'm monitoring this video on my DT770 Pro 250Ohm plugged into high end RME converters and it's the ME2 that sounds thin, harsh and sibilant as if the lows and even some of the mids are missing. The Rode Lav on the other hand sounds really good in the mid frequencies, the highs aren't that prominent but to me that's a good thing, it works great right away and i don't have to use a de-esser as if i'd need to if dealing with ME2 mics on especially a female voice. I also sent the video on my iphone 12 pro max just to test the audio on a phone speaker (as most of us would hear this video if we're not near our equipment) and again, the Rode Lav sounded best on the phone's speaker as well. Rode got it right in the mid frequencies and that makes it sound way more cinematic than how the ME2 sounds like. I'm sorry to disappoint Florian who based on his name he's german and it's completely fine to be a patriot and support his own country's brand, but i'm american and not an Australian and i love both Sennheiser and Rode for audio equipment, but Lav mics in that price range i'd chose the Rode one over the ME2 anyday.

    Hey Dave very informative video, Nailed it as always but I have a question for you. I am looking into getting the Roland R-05 which has a very high popularity rating on B&H and actually made me change my mind from getting the Zoom H5 because it was about 60$ cheaper. Do you think using the Roland on its own would be fine or would getting a really cheap lav be a better option. And if so what lav would you recommend.

    Dave, You should place mic head a distance from the cloth, Just like when you mount them on collar. Because The pain of fabric that mic sit on tend to resonate the high frequency which create "Sibilance".

    • @DaveDugdaleColorado
      @DaveDugdaleColorado  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting, I have never heard of this. Do you have any examples you can share?

    • @ChanonWangtrirat
      @ChanonWangtrirat 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dave Dugdale Oh! some mistake, Depend on what type of fabric mic sit on. Any kind of synthetic fibre will most affected.
      I think it's preferred way to mount some distance away from cloth.
      Also the Grid windscreen of Sennheiser ME2 was design to make more presence. Very opposite to Rode which Foam windscreen decrease presence.

    • @ChanonWangtrirat
      @ChanonWangtrirat 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dave Dugdale Just try to mount it properly. The mic head have to not sit on the cloth and you will see the different.

    Great video! Need some help with next: I have a problem connecting a Sennheiser ME2 to my Zoom H6 recorder. I found out the screw mount of the ME2 mini jack is blocking full connection to a mini-jack-jack-adapter to get it proper connected to one of te XLR/Jack inputs of the H6. Why the hack does the ME2 has this crew mount mini jack? What can I do about it to connect the mic to the H6? There is also the thing about 7.5V phantom power which the mic needs to work. So far I know the Zoom H6 only provides 12V, 24V and 48V...

    • @Allottedaaron
      @Allottedaaron 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +MillitzFilm If you are connecting the microphone directly to the zoom then you need to use one of the Sennheiser cables (CL-1 for TRS and CL-2 XLR female or CL-100 XLR male). That will give you the correct input into the recorder and leave you with 2 male Sennheiser TRS couplings on the cable and microphone. From there you can use a pro signal 3.5 female adapter to connect the two cables. I show the principal in my latest video with the Tascam DR-22WL. It is the same principal just a different Sennheiser cable for the other recorders depending on their input.

    • @costinvaly1
      @costinvaly1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If it's for youtube cover videos, i recommend you to comfortably record each performance (vocal and guitar) separately with the highest quality microphone you have available, mix them beautifully inside your DAW to make it sound like a finished record, then shoot the video of yourself with the guitar in your arms singing over the finished song which you exported as an mp3/wav file and lipsync over it, then once your import your video (plus its own bad audio file recorded by the camera), import also your finished mp3 song into premiere on a separate audio track, select both with your mouse at the same time, right click on them once highlighted and select "Synchronize". That function will sync your crisp audio performance with your video performance, then mute the sound of the video and let only the mp3 file audio run. You'll have a beautiful performance syncronized with a good music video for it. Save this comment soon because i'll remove it in 24h.

  • @Trusteft
    @Trusteft 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    So if I connect one of these, for example the ME2, to my laptop mic in 3.5mm port, it should work just fine, right?
    Will it be a problem (sound wise) if I don't clip it on a piece of t-shirt or whatever, and just clip it on my chest hair? I am not kidding, it gets very hot in here.
    I found a ME2 for about 69 euros which I guess is a good price?

    • @Allottedaaron
      @Allottedaaron 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Trusteft That probably won't work unless the couplings are the same. If your laptop is designed to take stereo input only on that port then you might get away with it but many accept input and output (macs in particular) and they use a different pin put. Plus the ME-2 has a screw thread that will stop full contact being made. My latest video covers this subject and how to get around it using a CL-1 cable and female 3.5 adapter. Have a look and that should show you what you need to know.

    4:55 - ALL Rode mics have the 3rd pin stick out further than the other 2. I guess it's a stylistic thing. It's definitely not a problem.

    • @rodemic
      @rodemic 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The ground XLR pin (pin 1) is designed to be slightly longer than the other two pins. This is to ensure that when an XLR is plugged into the mic XLR socket the first pin that comes into contact is the ground pin. This feature is implemented in all RØDE microphones to protect the microphone circuitry from a static electricity short that could potentially damage the microphone circuitry.

    • @DhaneshMahtani
      @DhaneshMahtani 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Rode! I knew it was a feature, not a discrepancy. I use a ton of your mics, live and in studio, and have never had a problem with your quality control. That's why I was quite surprised to hear Dave complain about it.
