I think Jamie Lee Curtis winning was more of a "thank you for your years of great films" award. Not for this win, but for the decades of great filsm she's been in. Like Leo's award in Reventant.

I feel like I need to clarify that the original form of The Boy, The Mole, The Fox, and The Horse was in fact a children's book, and as you said it was very good. The book itself is made up of less of a story and more of a series of quotes. The point of the book isn't to follow the story of the Boy, but to experience the quotes through their eyes. The film adaptation of this was fantastic if you went into it with this mindset, however I can see why people wouldn't enjoy it if they simply went into the film with no prior knowledge. Also it was made by a small studio which was just put onto Apple TV.

True, the book is very good and not for children (even if you would expect that). It's more like a philosophical poem with some beautiful art. Though I think the short film was mid at best. The animation is beautiful and the story on itself is good. The voicework didn't work for me and it's weak structured.

I actually disagree it’s a kids book it’s more like a cute feel good picture book. Although it worked for kids it resonated with older audiences more than kid since there’s no actual story. It’s just supposed to have nice sayings that make people feel good with the general vibe of feeling lost and growing and finding people you trust etc and that’s what it does. The short sort of conveys that although the pacing is harder to execute as a moving picture and that’s felt…especially since they then tried to give it plot when there wasn’t much before etc. I liked the book. The short was nice. I haven’t seen the other shorts even but I really can’t see BMFH being the best the year offered….

I love Jamie Lee but her winning is the biggest giveaway that most times, the Academy doesn’t care about the performance or category, they just vote on the movie or person. I always suspected that but I held out hope that they were for the most part voting legitimately, but this proved me wrong. I thought nominating her was pushing it, but winning over Condon, Bassett, and especially Hsu is crazy (haven’t seen The Whale but I heard Chau is great).

@@andyeleven Respectfully, I disagree. While Cate Blanchett was excellent as Lydia Tár, embodying natural confidence and familiar mannerisms (her drifting eyes and hair twirl being a personal favorite), Michelle Yeoh had to balance her natural martial arts background and allow it to feel artificial through her movements with her expressions brimming with the character's subtext. In addition, Yeoh had to rapidly switch from a superpowered multiverse traveler to a casual everyday laundromat owner on a dime. That in itself, for me, is worthy of universal acclaim.

@@BatAmerica thanks for the respectful comment w/o just hardcore shitting on me/anything else. i really love michelle yeoh, but i honestly thought her performance was good, but not great. when you talk about switching between multiverse traveler to laundromat owner, i didn't feel she did that well. her delivery of lines, while maybe containing emotion and meaning, still just sounded very monotone and one dimensional. i thought ke huy quan was fucking FANTASTIC and made the movie a lot better for me. for best picture, i feel this one is way more subjective, especially from my pov. i think banshees of inisherin is just way more tight, succinct, impactful, and better written than eeaao. eeaao had its moments, but mostly for me, those moments were ke huy quan just making their decently written script sound EXCEPTIONAL (like when he is in that suit saying he'd like to do taxes with her in another life). banshees had some very hilarious moments, while eeaao was more eh --ive seen people talking about how the humor was hit or miss in eeaao, it was a miss for me. i found the d**do scene pretty funny though-- eeaao had 1.5 good performances, banshees had a whole four oscar winning worthy (imo) performances from farrell, gleeson, condon, and keoghan, the latter of which also being great in dunkirk. and finally, while banshees felt like a more personal, touching flick about loneliness, friendship, isolation, being remembered, time, and death, eeaao felt like, without trying to offend anybody who seriously liked the message of the film, something an overconfident philosophy 101 student thought up in an hour after reading beyond good and evil, thinking they were extremely profound and special, while completely missing the point of the entire book. but yeah, opinions are opinions, i like different stuff.

As a German, I can't help but be a little bit happy about the love All Quiet got. It's probably in vain, but I kind of hope to see a positive impact on German cinema. Most of the big movies produced in Germany are really shitty "comedies". Great movies are few and far between (maybe "Sun and Concrete" is the next one, haven't seen it yet) and it would be amazing, if the success and apritiation for All Quite would change that, if even a little bit.
Therefore to me, it is kind of odd to see All Quite prested as the "movie to hate". Maybe it's just the german/european in me, but isn't it at least good to see, that the Accedemy continues to show love for movies that are not procuded in america? Maybe other movies deserved it more, but to me All Quite was more of an underdog going in (exept for international film) and I was suprised to see that it got so many nominations to begin with. To hear you say you almost feared it would win best picture is just crazy to me. A german movie winning best picture? That would have been insane. :D Really glad Everything, Everywhere won though!

Will say that while I am happy that Everything Everywhere All at Once won best picture as one of the better nominees, I am disappointed that it and All Quiet ended up dominating so many of the awards during a year where I liked so many of the other nominees. Personally would've given cinematography and screenplay to TÁR, directing to Fabelmans, and supporting actress to Condon in Banshees. Would've been great if the love could've been spread around a bit more for what I thought was one of the better crops of nominees we've gotten in the past few years.

Based. Literally any other nominee for Direction would have been better, mainly Field, McDonagh or Spielberg.
And the screenplay of Tár and The Banshees are so precised, EEAAO feels unpolished in comparison.

@@rafaelc.c. I think the reason you say that is because EEAAO comes across as this chaotic, barely contained thing that seems super messy and awkward. But I would say that's what makes it so unique and a standout - the crazy narrative the Daniels thread through the absolute chaos of so many varied timelines & universes makes it a deserved win in both categories, while juggling genres like a circus act. Though - most of the nominees in both categories were absolutely spectacular.

Dude! The boy the mole the fox and the horse is a book! IT’s recommend by therapists all over. It’s targeted at anyone that needs to hear it and by the looks of things a lot of people also needed to see it animated as well. For me the animated aspect of it really brought the book to life and everyone on the whole team worked so hard to capture the essence of the book. Obviously everyone is entitled to their own opinion and it’s ok to disagree like ❤ I don’t have an issue with anyone that doesn’t like it ❤❤ I just wanted to say that it is a book and not necessarily just for children.

Among the nominees in these categories, All Quiet was the only one whose cinematography and music truly made me feel something beyond what was happening on the page. They compliment the film’s tone, themes, and character moments so beautifully.

Jamie Lee Curtis might not be the best performance but it's one of those Oscars that is rewarding her career and cult status (and her Hollywood pedigree) than her actual performance. It's like giving an award to Bill Murray, Samuel L. Jackson or Kurt Russel.

I find it best to let it pass you by, because the Oscars are never changing, so us film fans might as well accept it and enjoy them as something to laugh at, not with. The only ones I cared about were the fact that banshees won nothing when it was quite easily the best ( not an EEAAO hater, it was fine and nothing more) and Jamie Lee Curtis did not deserve the Oscar whatsoever and frankly she brought down the film for me. Just give her a lifetime award to shut her up and give it to Kerry my god.

    Overall an incredibly bland show
Cate Blanchett delivered one of the best performances ever, should’ve won.
Jamie Lee Curtis winning was absurd, Angela or Stephanie where much more memorable.
The fact that Elvis was nominated for best picture is simply insane, made sense it didn’t win anything.
The Banshees and Tar not getting a single award is ridiculous
Quiet on the Western Front overrated as hell, Babylon should have won best score. War movies are starting too feel overplayed and unoriginal.
Colin was also a very good nominee
